I have looked at this chart a lot. There was a recent thread that made me start looking at it a more again. I'm really close in progression except for the weight of my driver shaft.

My setup is.

124 gram iron shafts ssx1

69 gram 5 wood @ 41.75, 20 degrees and d4

69 gram 4 wood @ 42.25 and d 3.5

69 gram driver at 44.75 and d3.5

I have tried going heavier with my 4 and 5 wood shafts and it never works. I have tried going lighter with my iron shafts and it was really bad. The one thing i have left alone is the driver shaft. I've been playing this setup almost 2 seasons now and it has been good to me. My question is do you think going lighter may help even more with my consistency?

That originally came from Howard Jones. He might have a better answer but as I understand it, it's still just a starting place for the fitting process, they are not hard and fast relationships by any means. The actual selection need to be done dynamically and the results are the only thing that really matters. So the only way to really get an accurate answer is to go test out a lighter shaft in the driver.

Spot on Stuart, its made to be like a "static fitting" to get fast starting point, nothing else.

As we all knows, shafts dont even have the same balance point, so how a "60 gram shaft" really feels in terms of weight might be different from shaft to shaft, so that chart is based on a theory of "equal BP" all the way, something that dont really exist, but this is what i found using True Temper products on players where ive made a fitting of more than one club, so what we see is the "pattern" of how it might look like. i cant recall any players who ended up more than plus minus 5 grams from it (1 row to the right or left), so it should be useful for the purpose its made, to get a starting point for what to try, or to identify why some clubs in the bag works better than other (those who dont work have a shaft weight way to light or too heavy).

I appreciate the comments from you both. I tend to over think things sometimes. Since my experiment with lifhter iron shafts went so bad i have really been focusing on weight. I will probably find something in the low 60s just to try but doubt I will make a change.

The comment about 2 shafts of the same weight feeling different makes a lot of sense. I have 2 different shafts in my 4 and 5 woods that are the same weight but one feels heavier to me.

Old thread, but wanted to give praise to Howard and his shaft weight progression chart.

Through knowing what weight I like in irons, I took a jump of faith and followed the chart - I am third column in from left.

Irons, I am playing Modus 105 stiff (106 gm).  Went with AD XC 4S in driver at 45” (48 gm), AD XC 5S (56 gm) in 3w and 5w and Tensei CK Pro Blue 70 S in 3H. These are all about 10 gm lighter than I have used prior in woods/hybrid.

Also utilizing a Howard tip, I added 4 gm of lead tape to the mid point of the shaft of 5w to get me to 60 gm and same to all iron and wedge shafts to get to 110 gm in irons and about 115 gm in wedges.  The iron shafts are now at the upper limit of the column I chose which I like. Somehow the Modus feel smoother and more solid now and it barely affected swing weight.

Clubs all feel very much of a set and swing similarly.  GIRs up in first 5 rounds by about 10-20%; FIRs up 20%.

Big thanks to Howard for the info he has provided to us in the WRX community.

im glad to hear that chart has been useful for some of you, but it amaze me that my chart seems to be the only chart for shaft weight progression out there, thats why i made it, i could not find similar anywhere.

Hey Howard...worth noting, seems the software change has 404'ed the link above.  Would you happen to have this chart?  I'm curious to see it now after reading this thread.  TIA!

This is great info.  I started playing this past year and in addition to working on my swing I have focused on shaft weight.  Currently playing 62g driver, 77g wood, 80g hy, 109g irons. This week I brought our an old Cally HW and smoked it, it has a 62g shaft in it I believe, little lighter than I play in my 4 wood.  Got me thinking and researching, then I stumbled on this.   Per this I should consider lightening up my woods and driver, something I may try as I struggle with an open face.  Question about the number for the irons, is it cut length of a 6 iron or prior to cutting (37-38.5" for most tapers)?  I have parallels so they would be heavier of course, my cut weight is 109g on the 6i, KBS Tour S.  The driver/woods is 46" uncut and hybrids 41" uncut.

My swing works best with heavy, really stiff shafts.  I grew up playing steel in all my clubs as a kid.  I'm just used to it.  I have a tendency to get wild with and overpower light shafts in general.  Swing weight for me throughout the bag is D3 to D5.

Remember, the chart is just to find a starting point for the fitting process - so it really doesn't matter if you use cut shaft weights or uncut shaft weights.  You just need to be consistent through the whole set as to which one you use.   Most will use uncut weights since it's easier.

Bump. This is awesome! I’ve spent a lot of time (and money) getting “re-fit” after injuries and 3 years off (takes more than any 1-4hr session… where I’m at/ IMO).

Finally feel great w/ Recoil 110 in irons, and HZRDUS Red 6S in driver. Hoping to be done for awhile once I re-shaft 3w… and likely 3h, 4ui. Very helpful, kudos and TY!

I wish I had your confidence in being done for a while. I will however keep blaming my equipment when it goes bad.

agreed by x1000 that this is great info!

I'm not sure how to read this chart. Would the numbers going across the top represent swingweight?

No, Sw values is not there, and has nothing to do with it.

if its the top left corner that fools you, its DRIVER and added lenght vs what i mean works as standard.

irons as + 0.5" from OEM, match driver as plus 0.5" in my chart, and thats 44.25"
