College walk ons

How many teams take walk ons and how do you go about being a walk on? Thanks

The majority of college athletes are walk-ons, I think I read. Best to just contact the coach of a prospective program and ask about how that works.

Start emailing coaches to inquire. There are different ways to do it and they depend on the program. Some are preferred walkons who the coach recruited, gave a spot to, but no scholarship. Some places have open qualifiers for students who want to try out. When I was exploring colleges a coach at a highly ranked school told me if I qualified for the US amateur and made match play I could have a preferred walk on spot (I wound up going somewhere else on a partial), and some coaches don't take walkons at all.

I think it also depends on whether it's D1, D2, or D3.

Well.... My college at a try-out. The date and time were advertised. I showed up thinking I had a very, very remote chance to make the weak D1 team but might as well try. There was no one there. I called the coach. "Oh, no one called you to tell we changed the try outs to last week?" Uh, no. I'm still bitter. And it was a long time ago.

 

I think the coaches sort of know who why they want on the team and who they want to see play for themselves. They don't want to exclude a guy who just had a bad round and take a guy who had a career round. I understand that. But then don't advertise open tryouts for the golf team.

I know a kid who wanted to try out at a D1 school, the coach told him they weren't interested in walk-ons or have tryouts. D2 or under, maybe?

Tryouts are essentially tournament play.  Qualify for a US Junior, US Amateur and make match play.  Have multiple wins and shoot multiple tournament scores in the 60's.  That is the tryout.....

As a D3 Guy I can honestly say it varies alot from school to school, at least in D3 it does. My school basically lets anyone on the team all you have to do is email the coach. Other schools in our conference its a tryout. Alot of guys transfer out of our D3 programs to D2 and D1 programs so if you aren't getting noticed by D1 coaches now go D3 or even JUCO put up some good numbers and then email those bigger programs.
