Can someone please answer how they will feel play differently when you removed the black finish?

Idk man, like the exact same. At least that's how it was with SM6

I feel like I've read otherwise with these.

Oh really? Very interested to hear other peoples' thoughts

I would like to hear the thought process behind that one also.

Here is what my SM6s look like now

This is exactly what my SM6's looked like after I removed the black with vinegar. It's been a year and they have never rusted, just have a shinier patina look. I love the look of raw wedges not for the rust, but because they don't show the wear marks from bunker, open face shots, or sandy driving ranges. After a few months of use with a Tour Chrome, you can see every scrape and mark the ball has made on the face as well as the marks on the sole.

If you want to rust them try getting some rock salt, the kind you use to de-ice side walks and drive ways, mix it with water and soak the wedge in it, this will definitely rust it. Take it out after a day if you don't have the rust you want soak it a other day and check it.

I stripped a black SM6 wedge and it felt the same as it did before I stripped it. HOWEVER, I also bought a RAW version of the same wedge from wedgeworks, and the two did NOT feel the same. Once I had both wedges at about the same wear, I took them to the course and let other people hit them both without telling them which wedge was stripped vs. raw. Unanimously, all said the raw wedge felt the best/ softer.

You’re correct, they don’t rust the same. The QPQ process gets into the 8620. The process also hardens the the steel overall. I’ve done serval in the past, some with great results (aesthetically).

A do-it-yourself raw finish does not look or feel like a factory raw finish - I CLR'd a SM6 black wedge and it turned out basically grey, and wasn't any more susceptible to rust than with the black finish on. They still look good, but not like the factory raw finish. On another note, I saw the SM7's today for the first time - as a Jet Black user I didn't like the blacked out finish, it's hard to read the lofts on the wedge, which could be a pain on the course if you have 3 of the same wedges. No thanks. Found the other two finishes to have too much glare, which is a deal breaker. Also, the 60 degree wedge i checked out looked smaller in profile than the SM6, and I prefer a slightly larger looking wedge. Going to stick with my SM5 and SM6, and if i had to buy a new wedge would go SM6 Jet Black, since I refuse to pay $200 for a raw wedge from Vokey. Not because i can't afford it but out of principle.

My new short game weapons for the season :) Looking forward to comparing this 60D grind to my K grind SM6 from last year. The smoked look of the brushed metal is fantastic looking. We'll see how long this finish holds up I guess...

^ good looking clubs you got there. Let us know how the finish holds up. I remember reading somewhere that it doesn’t wear well but on the racks they look great. So tempered by the raw but I hate the idea of it being an upcharge, especially when the standard is pretty pricey as is.

doesn't the glare off of the brushed metal face bother you, especially with a club that sits so open like a wedge? few shots of sun glare and I ruled them out. I agree they look great in the bag but the glare...

D Grind is the bee’s knees!!

Could you elaborate on how it plays? What wedge did you have prior to the D?

Sure...I had the 58.10 S Grind before. The extra bounce is great out of the sand and I have no problem opening the face up and hitting flops off of tight lies. Great club out of the greenside rough as well. Just much easier to hit different shots than with the S. Like Rick Shiels called it, the Duffer's grind. Very easy to hit. The brushed steel has less glare to me than the tour chrome. I didn't really like the jet black look and wasn't paying extra for a raw club that my wedge game can't tell a difference with.

52F and 56S for me debating between 60D or M or S

I use the 60 for everything inside 80 yards except long chips (use 52 for those) I play 2 courses - one has hard packed sand one has more fluffy sand - one has soft lies one has tight lies - Im thinking I don't want to swap wedges between the 2 courses so I want something Versatile

What should I do for the 60???

D or S ??

It depends on if you open or close the club face, If you do then go M grind all the way

The M is the most versatile and great from all over. Just not so automatic from the bunkers.

I love M grind out of the bunker, just takes a lil getting used to.

My sm4 was a 58.06 and it was awesome out of the bunkers. I went to the TM TP ATV grind and was also awesome.

I'm having some weird issues with my new 58.08M... i open it up and it hits the sand and kicks it up into the ball... so I get out but the ball is coming out with no spin and hard

What's the secret?

Club Champion had 10 sets of heads only for sale. I believe Callaway released 2,000 raw sets, so it was more of the right time and place. The feel very similar to the chrome version, but the just look flat out awesome.
