Played with a guy that was bounced in stroke play and he said the greens were running 14 and they look like they've firmed/sped up as the weeks gone on. That kind of speed and firmness at Riv could make even the best golfers look silly.

I really doubt the greens are running anything faster than a 13

From a competitors mouth that would have a fairly good handle on green speeds.

Obviously he doesnt...

Thornberry for the win!

I was disappointed when I saw he lost yesterday, but he had a good run. I wonder about his longevity in the game just given the weird hitch in his swing. I know Jim Furyk....got it....but still- it just doesn't look that consistent to me.

Think he ran into a buzz saw and may not be experienced enough on the California grasses yet. The guy he played Smyth was just insane. Almost every shot was on the pin with little to no movement. Gotta be the odds on favorite remaining.

I didn't watch yesterday, so I was disappointed to hear that he didn't advance. He's got a lot of game. I've played with him before and his (goofy) swing can be deceiving. The kid can golf a ball, though.

I'll say this...watching match play this week, it makes you really appreciate Tiger's three consecutive amateur wins....he had to win 18 consecutive matches!

AND he somehow did the same thing in the Junior, amazing stuff!

yeah wasn't it 6 straight? 3 juniors and then 3 ams. Incredible stuff.

Rooting for fellow Virginian Mark Lawrence!! Always been a great golfer but was never on the national stage. Dominated in and around Virginia though. Look out for him

Doug Ghim is a solid player. He's been fun to watch at UT. Pulling for him to finish it off tomorrow! Earning a spot in the Masters and US Open next year is a nice consolation prize even if he isn't able to finish it off.

Once you get to 14, that kind of gets terrifyingly fast. These greens are fast this week, but I doubt they're running at 14 feet. Some of the downhill putts are scary, though. The greens are also quite firm.

I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong but many people truly have no idea of what actual green speeds are. They might be a 14 but they might be 12. At our course (work on the turf crew) and people I've played with are actually amazed at what the greens truly stimp at. We had them at a 10 and many people kept saying they were an 11.5 or 12.

I agree, people tend to exaggerate, 12 is absolutely screaming.

I asked one of the USGA guys what he thought the greens were stimping at, and he said the original plan for this week was to get them at around 12.

Naturally, weather conditions and further aggressive maintenance could take them higher, but they are not being double rolled, and the relative humidity has remained in the 65%-70% range.

I know up here, in the PNW, there is only one course that traditionally keeps their greens over 10 and they keep them between a 12 and 14. That is Tacoma golf & Country Club. Story has it that Ryan Moore, Kyle Stanley and a few other PGA and Web tour guys wanted a home club and Tacoma was the o my club that would commit to keeping them above a 12 year round. Supposedly had them at a 14 for a US Open qualifier and even the tour guys were amazed at how fast they were.

I doubt Lawrence is feeling bad about his 3-putt on the final hole. He lost the hole because of that nuked gap wedge that finished miles from the hole. From there he was highly likely to 3-putt. His poor approach shot is the real reason he made bogey on the final hole.

I'm pulling for Redman from Clemson in the finals.
