Team Titleist 718/818 Fitting/Review

Just got back from my Team Titleist 718/818 fitting. The irons are nicer looking in person as pictures don't really do them justice. Special thanks go out to Cathi for the invite. She is awesome and a great asset to Titleist! I took pictures of the iron heads but the hybrids are on embargo until the 31st so I will not post them. What I was fitted into is in the last picture. Only hit the MB, AP3 and AP2. I'm supposed to get my order next week and will post more pictures then. Everything looks good and it is hard to tell the AP3 apart from the AP2. I was getting 9 yards more out of the AP3. I was not looking for more distance so the AP2's were the way to go. The feel of the AP2 is much improved over the 716 AP2 and the 718 AP2 is also as forging as the 714 AP1.

What was your experience with the AP3s, were you looking to use them as a long iron replacement of for the full set?

I went in thinking I was going to get an AP3 3 iron but the H2 won that spot. Im LH and only 7 iron fitting heads were there to test.

Thanks! I'm intrigued by the no-upcharge Tensei White 90, Atmos Blue 8, and Pro Blue 80 (but wish they had a 90).

I forgot to mention that the biggest change was to the faces of the AP2, T-MB and AP3. Not sure if included in the AP1 but I don't believe so. Titleist changed the metal of the faces to Japanese spring steel similar to the steel that Nippon uses in their Modus shafts. This really enhanced feel while also helping the irons maintain, or even increase ball speed.

Just noticed this as well - That's a shaft I'd like to try. I'm currently gaming some C-Tapers and looking for just a touch more height in my trajectory but similar spin rates.

click on the link I provided yesterday. If the cover does not say 8/15/2107 then they reverted back to the old guide.

Have a distinct feeling the answer is no. If you look in the book, it does not denote any *RH only, including for the 816 where I know the 17* was RH only. I'm going to guess that we're SOL here. The person that told me was a Titleist rep, so again, pretty reliable source. I'm going to be trying to loft down the 19* to make it go 20 yards further than my current 19*. The current one is 10 years old and not very high tech, so I'm actually thinking a new tech 18.25* might not be that far off of the number I just mentioned.

Well that sucks.

To be honest the 19 H2 dropped down to 18 and being more accurate/shorter can't be far off. And we're talking the less forging H2 as the 17 degree offering this time around so that's almost 3W territory anyways IMHO. Not defending but maybe more rationalizing.

To be honest the 19 H2 dropped down to 18 and being more accurate/shorter can't be far off. And we're talking the less forging H2 as the 17 degree offering this time around so that's almost 3W territory anyways IMHO. Not defending but maybe more rationalizing.

 

I think you're probably right. I set up a Titleist Thursday demo here in a couple weeks, so I'll get a chance to see. The 3W slot in my bag is currently vacant and sorely needs a replacement. The 19* hybrid spot is 100% locked up with a 10-year old club that is the oldest in my bag by 8.5 years (meaning, it's never going anywhere). But I don't exactly hit rockets with the 10 year old club, so my hope is that one of these newer hybrids that is more distance geared cranked down to 18* will get me an extra 15-20 yards. If it did, then I'll just settle on carrying a no 3 wood bag.

 

EDIT: And by the way jrshelby, I tried to fill up that slot with YOUR old TMB 2 iron that I bought off another member on here. It was close, but no cigar. Just not quite what I'm looking for. Small world, right????

Any one have thoughts on the AMT iron shafts?

 

I've been playing Rifle and KBS Tour for years.

 

The push for AMT is surprising. They've received mixed reviews at best.

I think more players will adopt the shafts of the CB and MB (project X LZ 6.0)

The LZ was the last shaft I thought would actually be the best fit for me being mid launch. I had a lot of reverse logic going on in my fitting. Years of predetermination needed to be removed before I could except what was the trackman results. I'm a high ball hitter. Really have no problem getting the ball in the air. Matter of fact my launch was considered by the fitter to be to high. The odd thing was that I needed more spin. But heres the confusion part. I did not have enough spin with my Modus 130's and launched them high. Tried S400 AMT for the weight and spin numbers were to high and were the worst numbers out of everything. My highest launch was C-Taper????? and turned it over to much. I've always have hit C-Taper high. The C-Taper felt the smoothest/softest to me followed by the Modus 130's then the LZ 6.0. I hit the $ taper and same result as C-Taper but not as smooth to me.
