Total Driving, Ballstriking, and Scrambling

Ryu started working with McCormick in early-2016. Her stats that year and in 2017 were great. If the premise is that the swing advice is horrible one needs to believe a) it takes two years for the negative changes to show up (I've heard people taking 1-2 years to be comfortable with changes, not sure if it works in reverse), or b) the extra effort / focus she had made up for any swing faults. A third explanation is that despite all the praise that came when she was winning, the new swing was neither better or worse overall. It just had different trade-offs. Personally, I believe it's some combination of the last reason and b), although if you look at Lydia Ko and Leadbetter I am sure there are a lot of people who will claim a) and I can't really refute that.

 

It is also my guess that McCormick did something with Ryu, it worked (at least in the short-run), and then he pushed it on Spieth. As far as I'm aware, McCormick has worked with Spieth for sometime and if he thought Jordan's swing was too upright, he could have changed it a long long time ago.

 

I believe I've posted similar thoughts in the past so apologies if this is a repeat. But I do think it is a very interesting case (or very odd random luck/occurrences) and wondering how it will end up for both.

Minjee has gained some distance (absolute, relative rank is still about the same) but at the cost of accuracy. So far it hasn't hit her GIR or scoring, but it's pushing her down in these stats/figures.

There's missing greens, and then there's really missing greens. Lydia has an ugly snap hook that rears its ugly head from time to time. Minjee is also longer and stronger, so hitting out of the rough is not as penal.

Sorry, I mean these as two separate comments. Basically if Lydia had added 10 yards (I think more than a few have added 5-10), she'd be right around where Jin Young Ko is, which is proving to be "long enough."

 

Minjee definitely has some different attributes to her game/swing. It was more that she's really fallen in these rankings, primarily due to the accuracy figure declining quite a bit (relatively speaking). Her overall GIR, scoring, and performance is about the same, so hard to tell if its better or worse. Her sub-par holes per round are down from about 4.3 to 3.9. I can't tell if this is a proximity issue coming out of the rough 1 more time per round or random noise. I may have guessed that the shorter club in on 9 or so other times per round would have helped offset coming out of the rough 1 more time. I don't know what the "tour level average" stats say about this.

Jin Young had a great August. She moved up from 84th to 67th in driving distance, and therefore moved up in the Total Driving rankings from 11th to 5th. 6ix moved from 18th to 8th, another big jump. Danielle moved from 23rd to 13th.

 

Yu Liu moved up to 7th in Ballstriking, becoming the highest ranked player without a win. 'Gotta get that putter working.

I was thinking the same thing, but she's got to get that first win. Shanshan has a way of flying under the radar for most of the season with solid, but unspectacular play, and then grabbing a win when her putter gets hot.

I always say Shanshan is dangerous any given week, she tends to get on a 3-4 week roll then fizzles out again. As for Yu, I don't think she'll be a dominant player, but steady. Maybe top 25 yearly.

'Always interesting to look at the ballstriking list to see who's still looking for a first win. It appears that Jennifer Kupcho has passed Jodi, although Jodi has been on tour a lot longer. Mina has also crept up the list.

 

Generally speaks to their putting, especially under pressure.

Hard to know to know too much from this year's stats (players mindset/practice, relatively speaking the tournaments played/courses could be more different) but Minjee's driving continues to suffer vs. a few years ago.  Last year, she dropped quite a bit in accuracy with a pickup in some yards.  Her GIR was still very strong so it seemed about a wash.  But this may catch up with her eventually.

 

I'll give her a pass this year even though she's been playing a lot.  But I would watch closely as this could have an impact on how competitive she is among the elite rung of players.  I believe in years past she was looking more like Brooke and Nelly in these two categories.

Good job keeping tabs with this @Argonne69   Did Bianca's lower number of starts affect her ranking?  Any surprises stand out for you?    I'm also bullish on Jennifer Kupcho's game too ... she is playing really well, especially since she has gone back to her irons from college.

No, the number of starts doesn't affect the ranking. Any (member) player who plays at least one round will have a ranking based simply on the average/percentage. Of course if a player only has a few rounds played, the numbers for a bad round(s) will have a larger impact on the overall average/percentage, and drop their ranking.

 

I was a bit surprised that Bianca's total driving numbers weren't higher, given what I saw this past weekend. However, she's near the bottom in driving accuracy. She averaged 9 fairways a round in Portland, 7 at the KPMG, and 10 at Lake Reynolds. However, Oconee does have generous fairways. 

 

I was surprised to see that Minjee's ballstriking has fallen from T18 last season to 69th this season. She's not giving herself many birdie opportunities. One the other hand, Lydia has moved from 130th to 77th. 

 

As I noted early, what usually stands out is the players who are excellent ballstrikers, but either don't have any wins (e.g. Jodi), or have only a win or two (Carlota). That usually points a finger at putting, or too many blow up holes.

She won 20 tournaments including 7 majors with one club.

The competition is always different.

 

They didn't compete with Brooke Henderson until 2016, Nelly Korda and Sung Hyun Park until 2017, Jin Young Ko until 2018.

 

Now, they need to compete with Bianca Pagdanganan, who averaged 299 yards at Drive On.

It's a very hard question to answer.  Jin Young Ko was literally average distance off the tee last year and cleaned up/was unquestionably the best player on the planet. 

 

When Minjee came out on tour I think she averaged about 260 yards and was in the top 20-30 distance wise.  At the time, there were few bombers that actually had an all-around game (Lexi, Wie at times, maybe Jessica Korda and Brittany Lincicome).  Minjee kept getting a little better every year and made it into the Tier 1  group of players.  But overtime along came Brooke, SHP, Nelly and they are all above average distance and very good at everything else too.

 

Roll Minjee back a couple of years and she'd be right about where JYK is/was.  Danielle Kang is also in the long enough but far from a bomber category.  So is it possible?  Yes, as you still need to make putts and perform under pressure when you are in position to have a chance to win.

 

I think everyone is dying to know what would have happened to Lydia had she just stayed the course, possibly do a little strength training to gain some speed, and hit it 255-260 now.  Can a top 10 iron game and a great short game still allow you to dominate?  I think the general sense is that she wouldn't be the 2014-2016 version but could probably win 1.0-1.5 times per year (of course, we'll never know so I can write whatever here).

 

Part of the issue may be that someone like Minjee wants to be the best player in the world.  To do that, they may feel like they need to hit if a bit farther.  They may also be overconfident in how easy (or difficult) it is to add speed/distance (at this level, players generally believe in themselves and could be fooled by past success).  But they know that they don't want to be a top 30-80 player on tour just getting by / collecting checks.  The result is they go for it and many end up harming their game...

I just think that these amazing players should have enough confidence in themselves to trust what got them there in the first place. 

 

There are far more disaster stories in golf of players (both male and female) chasing distance than there are success.

But that is the essence of golf isn't it?  Nearly all of the players on the LPGA have skill and notwithstanding distance, there is very little separating them in the skill department (there is some separation, but not as big as some would suggest).  The real challenge is the mental aspect of the game. 

 

As someone once quipped (Palmer or Trevino perhaps), the most difficult distance in Golf is 5"inches ... the distance between both ears.  Or as the Yogi (Berra) said and you can insert golf for baseball ... is that "Baseball is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical".
