Well, she averaged 254 off the tee, an increase of almost 10 yards from last season. She's not long by any means, but the middle of the pack puts her in good company, e.g. Danielle. She was near the bottom last season. She averaged 66% of her fairways, which is down from last year, and lower than the year before. What the stat doesn't tell us is how good/bad the misses where. For a couple of years her misses were pretty bad, so I'm guessing they were closer to the short stuff this season.

 

She hit 68.9% of her greens (36th), up from 2019. Another sign that her driver isn't missing as badly.

 

At the end of the day Lydia has a fantastic short game, and it keeps her in the mix. How good? We'll never really know since the LPGA refuses to post scrambling stats on their website. Want to know who got the most (meaningless) holes-in-ones? That's available. Ugh.

 

Edit: Oh, and she was also 5th in putting average, which points to a combination of great putting, and an excellent short game (giving her makeable par putts). She's also 4th in putts per GIR, placing her 2nd in Total Putting behind Inbee. 'Not too shabby.

If only Brooke could make a putt or get up and down this year, well maybe Santa will bring her a putter and a short game for X-mas. lol

Brooke's Putts per round average went up a full stroke from her norm to 30.51 (#104), that 4 strokes per event than she normally averages and 4 shots many weeks is the difference.  Brooke's short game was worse this season too, She's normally pretty solid where I'd say consistency is the biggest weakness.  As @Argonne69 says we don't get scrambling stats but they are available, I've heard them mentioned many times.  Even the "Golf Guy" on our Sports Network mentioned Brooke's scrambling stats at the US Open and not to leave you hanging she was near DFL lol.  I also kept track at Tour Championship and she was on able to get up and down twice and with 2 three putts that's just too many mistakes.  Not sure if the fact she took many events off and not played every week like in the past, played any roll in her off year putting and scrambling but she better figure it out cause she sounds like she'll be taking more events off in future.  Or we could find a way to make a clone sharing Brooke's off the tee and iron game with Lydia's short game and putting and have a super golfer, although I actually think we already got one we call her Sei Young Kim lol

The tour has the scrambling stats, and provides them to the media. However, they don't make them available to us mere mortals. I spoke with someone with the LPGA a year ago, and they said that was going to change. I assume the crazy year changed/delayed those plans.

RE: Brooke's putting. While I love the sister act, I can't help but think Brooke relies on her sister too much for finding lines on the greens. They really push the limits of the rules sometimes, but I don't think it's ultimately to her advantage to not develop those skills in her own. She rarely seems confident on the greens. I feel kinda bad saying this, but I'm curious as hell to see her with a caddy outside the fam. 

 

RE: Sei Young Kim. Yea, she's like a golf superhero! Now there's confidence on the greens! Treats any putt under 4 feet like a tap in, almost never putts short. I love it even though it makes me nervous as hell to watch at times.

Surprising how Patty is near the top in total driving and ballstriking. Generally the long hitters are crooked, and their iron game suffers.

 

Jennifer takes over the top spot for best ballstriker without a win. 

 

Amazing how Sung Hyun's stats have fallen. At the end of last season she was 30T in total driving, but has fallen to 127T. As a result her ballstriking rank has fallen from 66T to 140th.

 

Like a broken record Brooke continues to be near the top in ballstriking, but her putting woes keep her out of the winners circle. Gerina and Amy share the same characteristic.

 

So Yeon's driving has improved immensely. At the end of 2019 she was 146th in total driving, but has climbed to 29T.

Yeah, Brooke's putting is become a real big problem, it's bleeding into other aspects of her game.  Her par 5 scoring is down where she's in the 20's (spot) right now but usually every season is top 5,  She had 8 bogeys last week and 4 of them were 3-putts lol  And one of the bogeys from a club other than putter was on the last hole, missed green in reg and 2-putt bogey tells me "the cheese fell off Brooke's cracker" at that point and she went for something she shouldn't have.  At -7 at the time, the Eagle was for 10th, so let'er fly I guess lol.  The accumulation of all the various given up stroke, whether not scoring better on Par 5's or way too many 3-putts each week is just too many strokes to the fields where the winners are usually doing something to shoot lights out.

 

In the end it is what it is, she'll either figure it out or she won't but I think the process will be like turning around an aircraft carrier and take some time.  That said, I still think she could possibly win this year.  In 30 plus events if she brings her ball striking every week the law of averages say her putter will show 2-3 in the year for the week and if ballstriking and decent putting are combined, she'll be there with a chance win lol

Yeah, Brooke's putting is become a real big problem, it's bleeding into other aspects of her game.  Her par 5 scoring is down where she's in the 20's (spot) right now but usually every season is top 5,  She had 8 bogeys last week and 4 of them were 3-putts lol  And one of the bogeys from a club other than putter was on the last hole, missed green in reg and 2-putt bogey tells me "the cheese fell off Brooke's cracker" at that point and she went for something she shouldn't have.  At -7 at the time, the Eagle was for 10th, so let'er fly I guess lol.  The accumulation of all the various given up stroke, whether not scoring better on Par 5's or way too many 3-putts each week is just too many strokes to the fields where the winners are usually doing something to shoot lights out.

 

In the end it is what it is, she'll either figure it out or she won't but I think the process will be like turning around an aircraft carrier and take some time.  That said, I still think she could possibly win this year.  In 30 plus events if she brings her ball striking every week the law of averages say her putter will show 2-3 in the year for the week and if ballstriking and decent putting are combined, she'll be there with a chance win lol

I am nearing the point where I just accept the fact that she will never improve her putting.   I think you mentioned before, the quote attributed to either Einstein or Twain ... about the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over, yet expecting a different outcome.  

 

The fact that she is going to left-hand low right now for her shorter putts causes me concern ... I think that she is grasping at straws.  If anyone needed a fresh perspective on her putting, it is her.  With all of the other aspects of her game, she should be winning at least 2-5 times per year and contending at majors from the outset rather than backdoor T-10s.

I say try being an aggressive putter rather than a passive one, make it match the personality of her game.  It doesn't seem the frequency of these 3-putts are going anywhere, so than let's 3-putt from going 5 feet past the hole rather than 3-putting from coming up 5 feet short lol

One thing to watch with Lydia is whether her driving stats stay below average.  The iron game is pretty good (GIR) and the putting/short game has always been good.  Perhaps she lost to an outlier last week, although she also had an outlier of a round.

 

She is going to win again at some point, but sporadic off the tee is going to require a lot else to go right in a week (pressure on short game/putting) or you need a week where you drive it great (both are possible and not saying this is entirely "luck").  Distance is no longer a gap (in the long enough group now).  If she can get to average accuracy may start to see a bit of a jump up closer to where she once was...

Lydia's is currently 99T is total driving. She was 126th at the end of 2016. She's currently 63T in driving distance. She was 152nd at the end of 2019.

 

I see good things ahead. She's picked up an average of 15 yards, but has only lost a few percentage points in accuracy. 'Definitely trending in the right direction.

She's a rookie who has played 3 events this season (Cut, 12T, Cut). She had one top ten in 9 starts last year. She's 125th in greens per GIR, which is obviously her Achilles heel.

 

Brooke continues to lead in ballstriking. Patty dropped from 5th to 29th. Goes to show what a hot putter can do I guess. So Yeon makes a big move up from 30th to 8th.

Total Driving Ranking = Driving Distance Rankling + Driving Accuracy Ranking (sorted low score to high).

 

For example, Brooke is 8th in driving distance, and 59th in accuracy. Add them together and you get 67 points. That puts her in 3rd place for Total Driving.

 

She's 3rd in Total Driving, and 1st in Greens in Regulation, so together she has 4 points for Ballstriking. That's good for 1st place.

I guess I was fairly prescient with my comments regarding Matilda Castren!  She just did better than I thought!  🤣    Good for her.
