San Antonio Courses

Tbell3

Recommended Posts

Just moved to San Antonio in August. What are some of the better public clubs in the area? Played the Buckhorn up in Comfort a few weekends ago and it was in amazing shape! Want to play the Republic soon, anyone have any thoughts on it?

Also does anyone listen to the Golf Show on the Ticket 760 on Saturday mornings?

Only courses I would add are some of the older courses which are kept in decent shape. They are parks style courses, easy to walk. And fairly cheap.

Willow Springs

Riverside

Northern Hills

Since you asked about The Republic - I think its great. Greens are always in nice shape. Buckhorn, Republic, and Bandit are owned by the same company. Very dependable.

I have heard good things about the bandit! Has anyone played that?

Do you all ever listen to the Ticket 760's Golf Show on Saturday Mornings? They are always talking about the loyalty rewards program thru the company that runs The Bandit, The Buckhorn and The Republic, sounds like a great deal. Do you all use it?

Foresight golf is the core sponsor and may even produce that show, so I would take what they say with a grain of salt.

That being said, I think the Alamo City Golf Trail loyalty program for $60/year is a pretty good deal.

What all do you get with the Alamo City Golf Trail Loyalty program?

It used to be a much better deal. Its still OK. You get some discounts and loyalty points now, can get some free rounds if you play enough. But it used to come with several free twilight rounds just for joining.

I'm a Comitted Golfer member of the Alamo Golf trail program and if you play on weekends it's a pretty good deal.

$350 but you get 10 free "anytime" rounds that can be used anywhere except Brackenridge, even on the weekends. Comes out to $35 a round , cart included, hitch saves about $10 on a weekend/holiday round. This year you also got one free round at Cedar Creek and Northern Holls.

Also when you join you usually get a $15 " cart fee only" round each month to use at the specified course.

J_Birdie nailed it above, and I'll second the recommendation for Willow Springs. It's a bit quirky in spots, but overall, it's a very fun layout that (I think) hosted the Texas Open way back in the day.

The Quarry and The Bandit are must-plays—original Keith Foster designs with reliably excellent conditioning.

How is Golf Club of Texas? I've been wanting to get out there on my day trips to SA, but I don't want to go that far west if the course is in garbage shape.

Well, don't you have to play the 2 TPC courses - at least once?

Clearly the 2 best public courses in San Antonio.

I don't really agree with this sentiment at all once you factor in the price of a round.

With that said, the TPC courses are definitely worth at least one loop, and though others may disagree, Canyons is better and more fun than Oaks!

I disagree with this. Canyons is a fun course no doubt, but for the price, Oaks is where it is at. Oaks is just a beast is all, go up one box than you're used to give yourself relief.

I also disagree that the TPC courses are the best in town, San Antonio has a lot of excellent golf courses and I could make an argument that TPC doesn't even have a top 5 course imo.

I just have to tell a quick story about the Bandit. Really enjoy playing there. Anyways, there was 6 of us going so we split up into two 3 man teams and scrambled against each other. We teed off separate on the first hole but then started to play together since we were scrambling (don't worry, we let people play through willingly, even waited on them). I had an incredible eagle on 18. Hit driver off the tee, and then because we were scrambling and had one ball safe, I hit driver off the deck just off the green about a foot to the right. Putted it along the fringe and let it drop at an almost 90 degree angle off the hill and ran right into the hole. Was the winning shot. If it didn't go in it would probably still be rolling. Great course, go check it out.

Anyone played the golf club of Texas recently? I heard it was getting better.

I played it about two months ago for the first time in about 10 years.

Compared to what I had heard about the corse being left for dead a few years back it was in decent condition for winter time in San Antonio.

Greens were a bit on the slow side but rolled fairly true and the rough, while not high, was pretty thick.

I have a ton of loyalty points at Foresight. The nice thing is they also own courses in Houston and Corpus, so can use the points when I travel. It's a good program and you don't have to pay anything to use it. I think they are a great company and all of their courses are good.

How are the San Antonio area courses condition wise? I played the bandit today and it was in phenomenal shape

I play about 75% if my rounds at Cedar Creek and can verify it is in good shape right now, especially after the little rain we got last week.

I’m playing Silverhorn tomorrow and can report back on that course after my round. Haven’t played out there in quite a while.

I was in corpus a few weeks ago and played at Lozano. Other than the wind it was a really fun place to play.

Some good info that I recently discovered (some might already know this) but you can get onto the TPC courses by using Mastercard golf. If you have a mastercard world elite you can access a couple privates in San Antonio as well (one with a really high guest fee!). https://www.priceless.com/golf/play/
