Played at Silverhorn yesterday and can say it is in awesome shape...fairways and greens were in excellent condition.

My one complaint is on #10....par 5 and I put my second into a green side bunker and what do I find when I get there....a tree branch that literally overhangs the entire bunker and is just about 6’above the lip of the bunker and the lip of the bunker is about 4’ above the bottom so you couldn’t chip the ball out of it....needless to say I was ready to cut it down myself after taking 5 shots from there for an awesome double bogey!!!!

Silverhorn is just too narrow like that on some holes. Fairways are narrow and tree-lined, overhanging branches, etc. They should try to open it up some in my opinion. Play can be slow there partly because it's so narrow. Friend of a friend who does golf management said Silverhorn has the most lost balls of any course in the area.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but does anyone know a good place to get a club fitting at? Thanks!

The guys at MK Golf are great and know their stuff.

Since you asked about The Republic - I think its great. Greens are always in nice shape. Buckhorn, Republic, and Bandit are owned by the same company. Very dependable.

Thought I would update this - played The Republic this year and the greens weren't in great shape. Not at all what they used to be. Still an OK deal as they have been running specials, but...

I can see that being the case, luckily I’m a pretty straight driver so it doesn’t bother me too much.

Was out at The Quarry Sat morning.

Was in good nick, but surprisingly soft. Greens ran true, but were slow on the quarry side, quicker on the other.

Just wanting to pass on the info that Cedar Creek will be aerating their greens on 8/19.

Anyone else have info on the other local courses?

Horn punched on 7/31 and I played it Thursday and it was already rolling good enough. Probably gonna be perfect by end of next week.

Palmer punched mid July.

That is all I know for area courses and their punching

a friend and I will be playing a few rounds up there sometime in mid-Sept. we're thinking of the Quarry late Friday (we played it many years ago but the front nine was raining on us so we want to play it again) and possibly Riverside, Willow Springs or Northern Hills early Saturday. any other recommendations around the price of >$50? We've played the Republic a few times, La Cantera and a few others i can't remember at the time.

If you want to come a bit north Cedar Creek is the toughest muni course in San Antonio and is usually in pretty good shape.

If you play you'll have a lot of uneven lies in the fairways and large, undulating, multi tier greens.

I will vouch for buying the alamo city golf trails casual golfer membership. They give 6 codes out for free green fees throughout the year, you just have to pay the $17 cart fee. Brackenridge is an awesome course, oldest in San Antonio. I just played willow springs yesterday and it was really well maintained. Canyon springs is nice for the price. Cedar creek will eat you alive. Make sure you bring plenty of balls lol.

Golf Club of Texas has improved, however, it's super narrow and dry. I will give them + on their bbq though.

They dropped the sand on be greens at Cedar creek today.

Seems Cedar is late to sand. Almost everyone did it last month that I frequent at least.

.

Agreed.

Northern Hills is OK, but of the Alamo Trail courses the best ones in your price are Willow, Riverside, and Cedar Creek.

Brackenridge is really nice and within price range at times. Anyone else feel Mission Del Lago pays decent? I'm looking forward to playing Riverside next month with the promo code

I haven't played Riverside in about a year but will be there on Thursday, hoping it's in good shape.

  • 4 weeks later...

The wife and I were in San Antonio for a concert this weekend (River City Rockfest, awesome show BTW) and played Northern Hills on Sunday before driving back home. Great little course. When we checked in they told us it was cart path only. We ate breakfast and chipped/putted a bit (driving range was closed). We I was about to tee off, the marshal cake up and said they had gone to 90 degrees and to just avoid the obvious wet spots.

We caught a 4some on the 4th hole, and there were a couple of groups in front of them so nowhere to go. We just hung back and made the best of it. No one behind us till 16, then it became a traffic jam. Still had a great time.

Playing most of my golf in the Houston area, the elevation changes were a fun change of pace from my normal rounds. Course was in good shape for the most part. As with most Muni courses, people don’t seem to fix their ball marks as they should. I fixed far more than I made, but that’s part of it I reckon.

For $47 on a Sunday morning, I’d play it again.

It was in pretty good shape...the greens were in better condition then they usually are there, which was nice.

This was before all the rain so it should really be green by now.
