The coat hanger drill for flat left wrist position

Hey guys,

 

I have been experimenting with coat hangers/ theHANGER training aid to allow me to learn how to wrist set correctly.

 

I had an interesting moment whereby I realised at my address position, the coat hanger wasn't even resting on my left forearm. Can someone reassure me that at address we should be able to maintain that contact point? This would mean I am requiring a drastic change to my set up.

I can't tell if it's more of a reference at the top of the backswing or is it from setup & therefore the entirity of the swing?

It depends on what your goal is. With my instructor he gets me to set the hanger so that at address it sits "in between" my arms, and then when I flex my left wrist the hanger rests against it, and I try hold it there for as long as possible into the downswing.

 

I think no matter what your goal is, the purpose of this type of training aid is to get feedback that you are holding the angle in the left wrist into the downswing. Don't worry so much about where it is at address, just use the pressure of the hanger part into your left arm as a guide.

I use to cup my left wrist really bad at the top and it caused all types of misses. I tried all kinds of things to try to keep it flat. I even bought a glove that has an insert in it which I had some success with. However how I finally got it flat to slightly bowed was to stop thinking about my left hand completely. I started thinking only about keeping my RIGHT hand on plane and miraculously it worked. When I'm playing well I don't have to think about it but when things go bad I tend to go back to thinking about the right hand.

Reviving this old thread.  But I have the same question.  I'm thinking of using this to get myself set up correctly at the top of the swing, without cupping my left wrist and going across the line.  But I can't tell either if the hanger is supposed to be resting against my arm at address.  If it's at setup, then I feel like I'm forced to forward press a lot.

It should not touch either arm at address. It’s been awhile but Iirc the hangar website has a video that talks bout how to set it up and where the aid should be at address.
