Titleist's new "AVX" golf balls, with premium urethane covers

Recommended Posts

So, the AVX is about four dollars a dozen cheaper than ProV's, but is not nearly as good. At a premium price, I want premium performance. I don't see the target consumer here. The people who want Titleist, but for some reason can't afford the extra four bucks?

Yeah, I just don't see where this ball fits in with their line-up...especially at that price.

I felt the same way until I tried a sleeve. For myself and to an extent (the terribly struck wayward drive, no ball will make enough of a difference from going OB on this bad of a shot); the AVX is a straighter flying golf ball. It gives me enough spin around the greens and it is longer than a ProV. Maybe it'll die though. But I hope your opinion is wrong. It's seemed to make a difference in my game. My HI has dropped from 11.8 to 9.8 in my beginning 7 rounds this year playing it. Could be a lot of things though. As far as price is concerned I don't know what the general golf population is after when selecting a golf ball. My guess is the majority cannot tell differences and purchase based on brand.

I am a high spinning hitter and the avx works perfect up to the greenside. Irons roll out maybe 5 feet on hard greens and I get nice roll out from my driver.

Just as soft as the Tour Soft but definitely doesn't roll out nearly as much on greenside chips. Comes great off the putter. Granted I play mostly Titleist stuff so maybe the ball reacts better.

Who knows. Also I like playing the yellow ball so I will continue to play the AVX.

Thanks man. Now trending to an 8.9 after last nights round, excited to work back into the single digit course handicap range again (need to get to 8.5). Granted, there are a lot of variables: new bag of clubs, new ball, attitude, playing a lot; but the combination or less of is working! Forgot what it was like to shoot in the 70's again with recent regularity. I play a tree lined, semi-private CC with dome shaped greens that are quite difficult to hit in regulation. It is short only playing at 6,500 yards but it's a very challenging course. Lowest I've been is a 4.5 HI at the age of 20 and before the last 8 rounds ballooned to an 11.8 at the age of 29. Having a wife, child, and a career might have also had something to do with the limited play :) Wouldn't trade it for anything, but I'm going to enjoy working on my game now until I get busy with work again!

I would try it, but I haven't purchased golf balls in more than five years...and am a bit reluctant to start! :-)

Sleeve in and sleeve out. Not worth the money.

It is, however, nice to see Titleist trying to add something new to the top line. Very refreshing approach AND, has opportunity for growth and even newer products to come out based off it's design.

Do you say this for the general public or for yourself that the AVX doesn’t/didn’t work

Edit: I guess I am assuming you feel the AVX didn’t work for you and I am also assuming that you possibly feel it’s not going to be a good product for most based on your comment that the AVX “is not worth the moneyâ€. Also, curious as to your experience and what ball performs better for you than the AVX.

It has been several Bridgestone generations since I tried the original B330-RX but I found the version I tried back in the day to lack holding power on approach shots as well as being more like a Surlyn ball than a Urethane one in the way it reacts around the greens. They may have improved in the three or so revisions since then or maybe not, never been tempted to try it again.

While I find AVX to spin less than a ProV1x or B330 it still holds firm greens quite well and is fairly controllable in the short game although it won't grab as quickly as most "Tour" balls.

Am I way off base thinking these are like say a Bridgestone b330rx?

@RodrigoNicely, like the last one, yes, generally so.

My take:

Yet another really good, top tier ball. For me, biggest thing I notice is a little extra rollout on the greens chipping. Putting preferred to the Pro V and x by a little, love the softness. That last b330rx was I think a little longer off the driver.

From a good source, I cannot even allude to, Titleist wants to eliminate Two "Pro V" balls, getting more towards the old "x". This year the ball characteristics are literally swapped, for me - long preferring the Pro V1x, the Pro V to me is preferable this year and their advertising suggests they have done just so.

I constantly play every ball I can get my hands on, played the last tournament with the AVX (alt shot with my wife and that's her ball of choice) I felt I gave up absolutely nothing v my usual pair of Bridgestone XS(Still uncertain which "new" ball I prefer in the line) and TP5x - distance or control-wise, very easy adjustment, but we're both 8-9 index, not top tier.

I played the last 2 released of the B330-RX quite a bit and never had issue with stopping power. It didn’t suck back like the old V1 or TP but stopped very well.

The AVX for me has a lower ball flight and less spin the the RX but maybe that is just my observation with only 2 rounds with the AVX. Not a fan but I love Srixon Z-Stars and XV so it obviously is a different ball

Purchased a dozen a couple of weekends ago. Ball flight is WAY LOWER than Pro V1 and spin is non-existent off the tee....that’s not bad unless you hit a fade and the ball never moves...at all...ever.

Felt good off the irons, again....way too low, and felt good off the putter.

I’m sticking with Pro V1.

A couple of the better players I know who have tried AVX said similar things about it. It’s kind of a love it or hate it thing I guess.

The Tour Soft is a mid 60s compression. Too soon for definitive numbers but I really don't think the AVX is anywhere close to that.

It was said Thomas was using a * ProV1X which had lower driver spin which was also same design as AVX. People took that as he was playing the AVX which he is clearly not

Kevin Na is also playing that *ProV1x. He said that he picked up some ball speed with it, and more distance.

  • 1 month later...

Just played my first round with the AVX. I really liked the ball. Felt really soft which I liked, and I like the lower/flatter traj. I play the x but it just spins way too much off the tee. I felt like the dispersion off the tee was better with the AVX too. Greens were super soft but green side spin seemed on par with the v and the x. I think I am going to switch because of the soft feel and the driver trajectory.
