Suggestions for GI iron set

colu41

Recommended Posts

I currently have a set of Mizuno MP59s. I don't golf as much as I'd like to anymore, maybe twice a month, and I'd like trade in these and switch to some GI clubs. With a trade in I'm hoping not to pay anymore than $50-$75. So I duno Maybe looking at $250 range for a used set. Any suggestions?

My only criteria is stiff steel shafts.

Would love to get a nice set of Pings again but. They look a little out of my price range

Depending on how many clubs youo have in your MP59 set, you can get around $170 in trade from Global right now with the current 17% trade bonus. That, along with the current 20% off promo, would put G20/i20 in reach... G15/i15 for sure and maybe even G25/i25 if they get some Value condition stock in (everything is Very Good currently). i15 in particular is one of my favorites as it strikes a very good balance between being GI but not looking like a shovel. It's a pretty safe bet to buy ping in Value condition... worst case is they'd need a re-grip, but it'd more likely be preference than condition.

Another I'd recommend as being particularly good value and truly under-priced are the Cobra GI irons from the AMP series and forward... so AMP / AMP-D, AMP Cell / AMP Cell S, Bio Cell, Fly-Z, and F6 all being in your price range. Main thing to consider is they all have light-weight (85-100g) steel shafts. Still, something like the Amp-D they have in stock right now you could buy for $160 (a $10 profit with your trade) and, if the lightweight stiff shaft doesn't work, pickup a set of your preferred shafts as pulls and still probably only have $50-$75 total invested (it's usually pretty easy to find a set of DG S300 someone's pulled to move to something more exotic for $50).

Thanks a lot Isle. I'm going to check them out. I have 4-P so. Hopefully I could get a decent trade in.

My local golf shop wanted $225 for a really old set of Nike Slingshots that were beat to hell so, figured I look online for a better set and deal.

IMHO, Global really is the way to go. The current trade bonus really helps make you feel a lot like you're loosing your kneecaps on trade-in value and stacks well with the current 20% promo... though sometimes you can stack coupon codes WITH site-wide promos and that's when it gets really good (I just go a set of AMP 5-Pw for $95 after stacking, planning on mixing in the 5-7 with my Fly-Z+). Also, if you're not a completely OCD about cosmetics, VALUE condition will rarely ever let you down on cast irons. I've had perfectly good luck with VALUE on forged irons as well, never receiving anything with the browning or sweet-spotting shown in the example pictures. 75% of the stuff I buy in VALUE condition I would classify as VERY GOOD or above... the other 25% has been no worse than promises. The sole exception was one driver that had shaft damage that was covered with colored electrical tape... but the return process was quick and painless too.

If I trade my Mp59s in now with Global, for an extra $30 I can get a set of G15s in very good condition. Worth it?

I just need to figure out how this trade in deal works. I've never shipped clubs always sold locally.

From MP's to G's is a huge jump. I wouldn't do it unless you either don't mind gambling or you are open to a large offset shovel with light shaft. Mind you, I'm a big G supporter, but most MP guys bellyache about how ugly offset GI clubs are thus my warning.

Absolutely not worth it - that's a big step down in player satisfaction. I'm not a fan of the G series in general - never liked the dull feel and there's always a lot of offset. Now, if you are talking i20 that's a whole different story and the S series is wonderful from the S58 to the present.

Cobra as mentioned. AP1 is always possible. But I'd be going TM in a big way. Speedblades would be great, so would SLDR or more recent sets. From the Speedblades on, TM really got it right. Long, forgiving, really good sets with up-to-date lofts and technology.

Thanks guys. I'm just looking for a set thats a little easier to play than the 59s. Look isnt really a main concern but the offsets mentioned about the G series is slightly concerning. And I'm currently looking at the Speedblades and they look to have almost the same cavity and thickness of my 59s. So I'll just have to keep looking. Maybe I'll go back to my local shop and test some clubs out first.

If you like Mizuno why not some EZ or EZ forged?

I was looking at those too. My only worry with the GlobalGolf Trade In deal is the fact that it would be close to 3 weeks for me to get my credit for my clubs, and actually receive my new set. I don't have a spare set of irons and also, like Tex said, would if I don't like the new ones? And Global doesn't offer cash for trade ins, has to be store credit...

The best way to do a trade with Global is to use Paypal as payment with the "Pay After Delivery" option... this way if you ship your trade back at the same time you place your order, the trade will usually go through before the Paypal payment is deducted and you're only deducted the difference if any.

To minimize downtime without clubs, I'd pay up to 2-Day or at least 3-Day shipping because both Ground and Economy use SmartPost which can be notoriously slow.

I prefer callaway pre-owned over global. I bought a set in "very good" condition from global and the set didn't have matching serials and had a couple big dings in the soles of clubs.

On the other hand, I bought a "good" iron set from callaway pre owned and the clubs were in excellent condition, with brand new Grips, heads amazing... etc.

So in general, CPO underrates their clubs. And they also pay out the most for a trade in.

With GGs bonus right now they are probably on par with what you would get from CPO... but I trust CPO way more from personal experience. And they offer a 12 month warranty, inspection, etc.

I would wait for the Black Friday deals or similar and buy any set from them in "good" condition.

I don't get too caught up on the purely cosmetic... though I might contact Global about major dings on something in VG condition. On the flip side, I had an item from CPO (on eBay) listed in Good condition arrive with a fitting cart shaft (still had the ID plug on the butt), a slick grip, and major sole brushing... but I wasn't overly concerned as I was parting the club out and still made 2x return on the shaft sale and head trade-in (put it on a different surplus shaft I had laying around).

I've found when Global has a good promo, especially one that stacks, they just can't be beat on price. I've had very good luck even with Value condition and anything above that has been beyond reproach. I also probably wouldn't bat an eyelash at mismatched serials as long as everything else was as described... but everyone has different priorities and experiences that they're based on, so I don't think you can really go wrong either way.

Appreciate the feedback here. I'm sure everyone's experience differs a little bit. I kept my set from GG because the shaft-head combo (Titleist 712CB, Modus 120S) at $230 was just too cheap to pass up. I stil have not seen a deal that beats this for the overall head conditions on the set. But yes, to me the major dings and mismatched serials as a bummer, but not a deal breaker.

I plan on doing some buffing and a small amount of grinding for the big dings to refurb this set to "very good" cond.

It is nearing the end of the season so, I may just wait for a good deal somewhere, and maybe try to sell mine locally after I pick up a new set. Well see. I just golfed a round with a buddy who has a set of G25s. So every par 3 I used his irons. They felt great, and I hit them very well. I just pushed everything far right. Might have been because of the graphite regular flex shafts but, overall felt really good.

Had forgotten but yes you can still pick up a brand new set of the EZ Forged on EB for around 300 bucks delivered.

Is that Ebay you're saying? Ordering clubs from Ebay sort of scares me but, I guess if theres a deal.

Ok. A few sets I found that I have my eye on. But one in particular is a 5-PW set of I20s. Really nice shape, with brand new grips for $210 shipped. That seems like a decent deal no?

Theres another set of 5-PW Speedblades for $225 in decent shape too but. I've always been a fan of Ping. And hitting those G25's today, and hearing everyones opinions on the "I" series, I feel comfortable in buying these.

The I20's are nothing like the G25's of course. CPO trade value for i20 5-PW steel is at 150 right now... so sounds like a decent price based on that . If it were me I'd go with the I20's but it's a preference thing.

Then again... for less than a hundred bucks more I'd more likely just hunt down a set of new Mizuno 2015 EZ Forged.

Really comes down to personal preference I suppose.

The i20 wasn't my favorite... smaller profile (mostly shorter blade length) and not quite as forgiving as the i15 before and i25 after. The i15 (to me) is the best value going right now and can be had for as little as $125-$150 in good shape.

One other thing to consider if buying Ping... you might want to go to a local shop and go through a Ping fitting for length and lie (dot color)... it's free, so why not know what you're looking for before you buy? If you do buy something that's not your fitted dot color, you can always send them back to Ping to be adjusted and re-colored but that adds cost and time... if you know ahead of time and are a little patient you might come across what you need and avoid the hassle.

As for the suggestion of the EZ Forged... they're great clubs BUT they really border on SGI in the PW and GW, extremely chunky especially in those two clubs. If you liked the G25s, though, they'd likely be acceptable but not quite as nice to look at as something from the i-Series. I just let my EZ Forgeds go and I don't miss them as much as I missed my i15s when I let them go.

Global Golf I can get 4-PW I15s for $159.... :dntknw: hmm. You know, I'm looking for a decent cheap, forgiving set. Dont need anything fancy, as long as they are GI's, I can adjust. Plus I know the owner of my local shop and if I need any club adjustments, he'll do them for very cheap. For a full set of WINN Dri-Tacs Installed, Shafts cut -.50", and lie angles adjusted, he charged me $100. I may do this. I'm just worried about be club-less for awhile...

If you can handle being out-of-pocket while your trade processes, just wait and send in the trade after the new clubs arrive. I'd go ahead and process the trade now since I don't know when the 117% bonus expires, but you can always sit on shipping until the new clubs arrive. Also, that way if you hate them, you can just return them instead of sending in your trade in.

But they wont pay back in cash, it's only store credit I believe. So If I were to buy my new clubs now & do the trade in, I'll be out the money while they put more credit into my account later. I'll have to call them and see what I can do.

Just find something nit-picky about the condition and they'll give you a full refund to your payment method after you return them. They're pretty liberal with the condition-based return policy.
