I wouldn't want to play as a 5-some in that group. However, I might have tried to salvage my day if I thought the other single in the group was OK. I would try to get them to split with the 3 knuckleheads in one group and the two singles in another.

 

That would have screwed the group behind us and made their slow day even slower. I probably would also have missed dinner with my kids and that was a much higher priority.

The shop gave you a rain check? did you tell them why you needed one? if so, what did the course do about that group and the cell phone usage and lack of rule adherence?

 

They gave a 9 hole raincheck and I did tell them. Not sure what they did after I left. The option of playing the front 9 again was eliminate because of a high school match.

That sucks. Unfortunately there are plenty of nitwits out there.

 

Earlier this season I had booked as the fourth for an early morning Saturday round. I'm waiting on the tee, and I see four guys arguing with the starter. Apparently the threesome I was scheduled to play with decided it was OK to bring a fourth player on a crowded weekend without calling ahead. I had booked the final spot on Friday morning, so it wasn't like I was a last minute addition. They were trying to convince the starter to allow them to play as a fivesome, and the starter was having none of it. Finally the extra player packed it up and headed home. The threesome was quite frosty on the first tee. Quite uncomfortable. I guess I was the bad guy. Had there been an opening for a single within a reasonable amount of time, I would have been willing to drop back. However, the course was fully booked for hours.

 

If you think you might have another player joining you, book the foursome. Don't assume the course will simply allow you to add another player on a busy day.

I don't care if it is fast or slow, I am not going to play a five. For me, it totally screws up the pace within the group, and I would rather not play than play a five.

I have played in many a fivesome and I don't mind it at all as long as we're able to keep up.

But under the circumstances on your day, I'd have headed to the house myself.

DavePelz4... I'm surprised that you didn't pull the "Do you know who I am!?" :)

 

Anyway I really don't like 5somes but have played, and done so quickly, only with friends who know the pace expectations and only on a quiet course.

 

In this case I'd have given up after 9@2:45 5some or not.
