More forgiving forged cavity backs...

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Bridgestone j33 cavity backs and I love the feel and look of them. I am hitting short irons decently, but the long irons are are really difficult to hit. My cousin has a set of nickent 4dx irons and I could hit them really well. They are "chunkier" than my Bridgestone irons, and I found them to be very forgiving. I could get a set of them, and I am considering it. I just wanted to get some suggestions from you guys. I am not picky for brand and if anything would like something that isn't mainstream.

You can try out the Bridgestone J36PC or J38DPC irons. Both models offer the same forged iron goodness as the J33 but with more forgiveness on the long irons. You can also checkout the Mizuno Forged JPX models and Srixon 545/565 forged irons.

If you are on a budget, looking for used I would recommend the Mizuno 825 or 850 forged or the Cobra forged tec. Both are quite forgiving along with the others posted above.

Mizuno JPX EZ Forged are getting blown out on ebay for cheap and would be a reasonable choice. The Maltby TE family would also be a reasonable choice as mentioned only they don't have much bounce and a sharpish leading edge.

One other option is to go to hybrids starting at 25* on down. Just about any hybrid will be easier to hit than a long iron. There are also irons like the Ping Crossover family and similar. There is more than one approach that could work.

Maltby TE/DBM would be the easiest to hit, forgiving for their size, and best looking long irons. They have one of the lowest sweet spot locations of all time for this type of design, which makes a long iron easier to hit for many players. They also have a little longer blade length and a short hosel, which moves the sweet spot out on the face...making them forgiving towards the toe.

The bonus is that the whole set has constant offset, so any irons you choose will have the same hosel to leading edge appearance. You can also order the heads by themselves, which in most cases will keep your cost down

Mizuno JPX-EZ Forged is probably the most forgiving forged head I can think of. Only downside is they borderline on looking SGI at address in the GW, PW, and to a lesser degree the 9i. Otherwise they're phenomenal and the fit/finish is top notch.

I'd give the Cobra Forged Tec, Mizuno JPX 900 Forged, and even the JPX 850 Forged equal looks if you can't turn your eye to the JPX-EZ Forged... unfortunately none are as easy to find on the cheap as the JPX-EZ Forged. I grabbed my Forged Tec 5i-Gw for $275 in good condition on eBay, but most sets go closer to $350-$450 in good used condition.

I'm a decent ball striker, and I played J33 CBs and Cally X-Protos for a long time. A few years back I tried a set Nike VRS forged. They are much thicker than the Bridgestones and Callys, but dayumnnnn they are way more forgiving. You can get a set of the VRS forged or Covert Forged for less than $200 on ebay.

Ben Hogan PTX - a lot of technology - very forgiving - long irons are surprisingly easy to hit.

I second this recommendation.

As I have mentioned many times I have owned 45 sets of irons , most of which are forged CBS. Current 4-p 545s might just be best of bunch for total package of looks, distance, feel. Have to play short tees sometimes due to other players and routinely hit my 4 iron with c-taper lite 175-200. I am 70 but must add been in gym 6 days a week for last 50 years but the 545s are real deal and being older model very inexpensive.

If you like Bridgestone, I'd also suggest j38/ 40 DPC. I had j33 combo's, j36 combos, j38 DPC and now j15cb's.

I found the 36's significantly firmer off the face which I didn't like, j38's were much more forgiving and felt better. I have no problems with the long irons in the j15cb's and just sourced a 3i to match the set.
