Per Rick Shiels Instagram, Sergio and Taylormade have mutually ended his contract.

+1. Yep, very surprising. I wonder if the idea was more his or more the new owners of TM? And if they "mutually ended it," that sure seems to imply there was time left on it, which is really unusual. Anyone know how many more years he was signed for?

Sergio finally wins a major and TM doesn't want to pay him lol. Certainly looks like he's going to Callaway which i think is a good pick up. He's now a major winner and i think he's going to win a few more especially THe Open.

I am as big of a Garcia fan as you will find, always wanted to play some of the same equipment, just never got along with anything TM very well, other then the TP ball.

 

I finally found a TM iron I was interested in (790), now he is leaving. I think maybe I wait now, see what the new Apex Pro's look like.

 

Can anything really push Mizuno irons out though?

This is actually going to be more interesting than him moving club brands. I have to imagine that with the TM and Adidas split he has a contract in place with Adidas already and will continue to have them for at least the apparel. Cally, if that's who he's going to, may offer some added incentive to switch the bag over, but who knows.

It's always seemed a little bit odd to me that he carried an Adidas bag when almost all other TM staffers carried the standard TM bag. I'd be surprised if he didn't stick with them for apparel.

I have it on good authority that Sergio will stay with adidas. I would be VERY surprised to see them part ways.

Well probably with Addias Taylormade split Sergio didn't have one contract and Taylormade probably cannot pay him as much as before and Callaway probably approached him with a good size contract and he probably couldnt refuse

This must mean Callaway is coming out with Apex Pro replacements soon, because I don't see him switching to an MB after playing with the P series CB.

 

I think what's more interesting and what matters more is what ball he goes with. I would assume Callaway would try to snatch him up for all they can, so potentially Chrome X will be in play for him, along with MD4 wedges, Toulon putter, Apex irons and new "rogue" woods.

I don't think there is any coincidence that this announcement came just a few days after Adidas announced it had completed its separation from TM.

• I was at the big golf shop in our area over the weekend and hit quite a few of the new irons. The one thing that struck me was how similar they all look in their respective categories. I'd guess, with all the custom work they do to the top guys' clubs, that they could play just about any brand successfully. The one variable is the driver; that seems to be where the OEM's distinguish themselves now.

With TM selling to the private equity company for ~$425M, it's likely the new owners are evaluating their equipment deals with a lot more scrutiny now that there's no intangible value from brand synergies (TM + adidas).

 

While Sergio is OWGR #11 and fresh off a Masters victory, he's no spring chicken (37) and doesn't appear to move the needle as much as DJ and Rory.

There's also the way that certain balls spin (more/less) off of various manufacturer's clubs, so that becomes a fun part of the discussion as well given that Squeegio is not exactly a low spin guy.
