Wow that's a surprise.

Not hugely surprised.

I'd be surprised if he didn't stick with them for apparel.

I have it on good authority that Sergio will stay with adidas. I would be VERY surprised to see them part ways.

not taking up an argument but just thinking out loud here.... Callaway signs him away from Taylormade for clubs but makes no plans for him to be dripping in Travis Mathew?

Toulon and Odyssey will be busy. Sergio was signed on a massive contract by Adidas as they envisaged him being Tiger's number one rival and saw him as a way to grow their Asian markets for shoes and apparel. His agent must be brilliant as over a decade later he was still on a fantastic deal without winning any majors. Who is next to go? Jason Day is not doing as well as expected and is regularly struggling with a dislocated earlobe or strained eyebrow.

I don't think there is any coincidence that this announcement came just a few days after Adidas announced it had completed its separation from TM.

ADIDAS COMPLETES DIVESTITURE OF TAYLORMADE, ADAMS GOLF AND ASHWORTH

adidas announced today that effective October 2nd it has formally completed the previously announced divestiture of its TaylorMade, Adams Golf and Ashworth golf brands to a newly formed affiliate of KPS Capital Partners, LP.

With TM selling to the private equity company for ~$425M, it's likely the new owners are evaluating their equipment deals with a lot more scrutiny now that there's no intangible value from brand synergies (TM + adidas).

While Sergio is OWGR #11 and fresh off a Masters victory, he's no spring chicken (37) and doesn't appear to move the needle as much as DJ and Rory.

Nailed it.

Plus in the world of Private Equity ownership, there's going to be some real balance sheet trimming to bring the profitability up. There will be less $75k driver contracts and fewer fringe deals, more focus on players who move the needle for the brand as you say.

Tiger has been a flop for TM

Doesn't really matter, he's on a performance based contract. All the rehab videos and media coverage with TM clubs pushes their brand while they cut him very very little in the way of cheques.... smart move by TM.

The Private Equity group will be doing the following:

1. Trim costs

2. Get the company profitable again

3. Sell company for a profit.

Rinse and repeat.

I heard he invested into Ben Hogan since it's in Texas and he lives in Texas... And in doing so he has a say in all future Iron and Hybrid designs. He will play Irons and Hybrid/ Utility..... Ping driver and fairway. Toulon putter and Callaway wedges...

I can't tell if you're serious or not. This would be huge for BH but I think I'd need a better reason for investing than just living in the same state.

Maybe Rahm will also leave TM and along with Sergio, both join Cabrera at PING............

Or join an actual Spaniard at PING like Miguel Angel Jimenez...Argentina and Spain aren't the same country FYI

Really. how intellectual of you to bring geography into the equation...........but FYI, they all speak spanish, so let's add Jimenez so they have a forth for bridge (FYI that's a card game) :pimp:

I've never been a huge Sergio fan. He's grown on me recently since it seems he is more mature and happy with his off course life. But if I'm a major OEM like Callaway, I would jump on the Sergio bandwagon. This guy played the new TM product every single time, first week of release, without fail, and played well. Plus he plays globally. That's like an OEM's dream scenario.

All these superlative intellectual responses................it's a shame though that they have no factual input to the subject matter............It was not stated that they were Spanish, only that they spoke Spanish (FYI that means the language - not the nationality)......... :stink:

It would be cool to see a big name in Travis Mathew. Have they signed anyone new recently? Callaway just signed Maverick McNealy and he's also with Under Armour.

Agreed. I also saw that McNealy just signed an apparel deal with UA. That looks to be a smart deal for both sides.

Looking at the Mon-Wed pictures at any PGA tournament on this site you can see that just about every tom, dick and harry is carrying the same Callaway staff bag and the swoosh label on their apparel. Seriously if I was a young pro I'd simply use the clubs I feel most comfortable with even if it means a mixed bag and then go with something a bit different such as Travis Mathew for apparel and try to stand out a little bit. Guys like Spieth(UA), JT(Polo), Fowler(CobraPuma), DJ(Adidas) have done just fine for themselves. Wouldn't bother with Nike unless they offered a big deal that couldn't be turned down like they did with Day.

I don't have any idea who even wears their stuff out on Tour right now. I'm just assuming with the Callaway ownership the worm will turn at some point and Callaway staff players will become Travis Mathew models.

Seriously man, you should have just quit while you were behind. There is no "factual input" required as this is not an actual debate, you made an asinine comment, end of story. You can back track all you want, but to say a bunch of touring pros should all enter binding contracts with the same company for no other reason than the fact they speak the same language is completely nonsensical.

I don't claim to know anything more than the rest of you but even the thought of Sergio and Adidas splitting mid-contract to me is a literal impossibility. Most people even entertaining this must be a little hung up on the fact that TM/Adidas were one for a very long time. I know it's fun to think about but, there is not one single reason I can think of that would support the idea with any logic. Nobody is Tiger but, Sergio is basically to Adidas what Tiger is to Nike.

Guaranteed he wanted more money like some have said and TM was like nope. Hes got a wife now, needs to think about his future, if half gets taken. hahah

People suggesting he wanted more money are talking about more money compared to the TM side of his TMAG contract. Since Adidas was likely the bigger chunk of the deal, now he can seek more money for equipment since he was given the option to leave TM. No one walks into the CEO's office of a company that was just sold because it was underperforming and asks for more money in the middle of an existing contract. Just doesn't make any common sense.
