Can you overwhelm a golf trip?

It looks like you are in for a treat. Just got back from a similar trip. Was in the Bay Area for work and tacked on a long weekend of golf. I played TPC Harding then drove down to Monterrey stopping at Halfmoon Bay (Ocean). Was lucky enough to walk onto Pebble and played Pasatiempo on the way up based mostly on feedback from this forum. I guess I could have played Spyglass as well but decided to hit Pasatiempo instead – don´t regret it.

From your schedule I would only say that Harding is nice but not spectacular so you may be better off going straight down to Monterrey and playing there.

As far as overwhelming a golftrip I think some of the others have touched upon the main points. I avoid driving too much and changing hotels more than once when on a full week. Also, afternoon driving is better because who needs the extra stress of wondering if you are going to make your tee time when you don’t know roads or traffic. Walking every day also takes a toll after a while so I would say take a buggy at least every third round. As far as playing 36. I tend to book an early teetime every day and then play it by ear. Depending on the energy and mood of the group we go back out or stay at the bar. It helps that last minute tee times are easier to get in the afternoon.

Finally, and know this is hard. Make it about enjoying the course and not the score. Plenty of time to beat your handicap at your home club.

You’ll never be disappointed you played Pasatiempo, and you may like it better than Pebble....

If you quote the architect MacKenzie, its better than ANGC. Of course, he lived on the course and had many years to make many changes. Unfortunately, not all the changes he wanted.

Its a classic risk/ reward, you do or you'll shoot big numbers. Manage your game and you'll be fine.

USGA course raters loved the course. There's also lots of history to many other famous courses

I was rather less impressed by Pasa than I expected to be. But that was probably a case of unrealistic expectations, the course itself is a very fine one.

It's not a very fun walk and there are too many places for my taste in which trees have been planted to "corridorize" each hole.

Great course, yes. The equal of Pebble or ANGC? Not in a million years. And by my small-town Southern standards the green fee is somewhat extortionate like most courses in that general area.

To give another comparable, I played at Spyglass Hill a couple days before Pasatiempo and thought Spy was on a bigger scale with more variety and just all around far superior.

I probably went into that trip expecting to be blown away by Pasa and for Spy to be overpriced and just too difficult for me. So perhaps no surprise given those expectations that I came away far more chuffed to have played the RTJ course than the MacKenzie one.

You mean like this one!?

I don’t remember what hole number it is though. On the front nine I think. Although it’s short enough to be playable.

I believe that's the 7th. A short par 4 immediately following the par 5 6th that has Alister's house on the left.
