Maltby DBM/MMB/TE Forged Question

I am very interested in this or the TE Forged (same iron) they get fantastic reviews. Super soft and forgiving. Beautiful looking.

Ive read countless reviews to this affect.

However most say these go High...but theres no comparison or launch data etc. Some are saying they go high but are comparing to old gamers with different shafts etc.

So a couple questions.

1) When people say higher are they launching higher or peaking higher or both?

2) do they spin more?

3) Size wise would they compare to my 714AP2s? (i saw the one post comparing it to the Srixon 745 and it looks almost smaller? Less offset I think shorter blade length but thicker topline?)

4) How would launch/spin compare to AP2s assuming the same shaft...

How would these compare in launch/spin to the new MP18s? Right now DBMs and or MP18 (Flihi/SC/MB Split Set) are the lead contenders.

where I am there is nowhere to test the DBMs. Ive hit the MP18 SC and MB tons the MB feels amazing but I have no business gaming a 4/5/6 MB.

For reference I am getting about 121-122mph Ballspeed from the MP18 SC 6i launching around 16-18* with 5600-5800 spin. (numbers pretty similar with the MB too). Thats with a PX L.Z 6.5 Shaft...if i go with the 6.0 shaft I can get launch down and Ball speed up but spin/dispersion suffer.

The only iron I can compare them to is a Wilson Pi5 with the same S300 and they launch a bit higher but don't balloon.

Jason, the vertical cg is quite low and results in 1) the complaint that they launch high, and 2) the praise they receive for their ability to get the ball in the air. :)

Do this, for $10 plus the cost of the components, they will build you a club:

These have one of the lowest Actual COG (sweetspot) heights of any iron. This design aspect is part of what makes these very easy to hit solid for a lot of players. Makes them easier to hit from tight lies, for example.

The player type that 'could' hit these high with excessive spin, are those who have an impact pattern high-ish on the face. A steeper AOA is something that would promote this. Also the player who generates a lot of spin in general.

They have a lower Actual COG than AP2's, so they would tend to spin more...again especially for a player who really drives down and through.

Best thing to do, is get one or two and test for yourself with an open mind. Don't expect anything, just see what they do. They're affordable and available in individual components, so no reason not to if your interested

Just build one, you won't regret it. I'm curious as hell to try some Wishons or something different but I don't know if I will love them or hit them better than my Maltby's. They are the best purchase I've ever made!

I may just do that but wanted to see what folks had to say.

My high launch and spin is caused by a slight stall of the hips and flip. When im swinging well its a non issue. Im actually usually only between 3-4* down with a 6/7i is that steep or shallow?

Not steep. A lot of times a flip can actually cause a lower impact point on the face,...where your high flight is caused by 'adding dynamic loft'...not by driving the COG far underneath the center of the ball. So if that tendency is the case for you, you'd probably be good to go...and even get some "help" from these.

If the design characteristics do in fact fit you well, you won't find anything better in this category of design. So it's certainly worth trying one to find out

I couldn't find any blade length specs for ap2 i know ap2 is shorter thrn srixon 765.

The dbm have less offset then ap2

They don't post blade lengths. I would estimate that the DBM is 2-3 millimeters longer than the AP2.

They have 2.5 millimeter (.10") constant offset on every iron. The AP2 have progressive offset, where in comparison to the DBM, the short irons have less and the long irons more

Actually, Golfworks does list the blade length for their irons. The TE and DBM are both 3.103 inches which is 78.8162 mm. My J15 CB's are 78 mm in blade length for reference. JPX 850 and 900 forged I believe both are 79 mm long. AP2 is slightly shorter than my J15's. Doesn't seem like much, but I can notice differences at address.

According to this chart ap2 are avout 78.4 or 78.5mm which id say is pretty accurate.

I duno if .4mm would be that noticeable.

The bigger question is hows the topline compared to the ap2?

Yup my miss is usually lower on the face too.

These are sounding better and better lol. Based on what youre telling me.

Again how are they for size comparison

The TE's are longer in blade length then the 745's

Thanks for that pic. They have a lovely top line. Quite thin. Unless the black is playing tricks. The j15 has one of the best toplines ive seen.

They do look slightlu long heel to toe but not really noticeable.

JohnnyT how do they perform for you in terms of flight feel spin distance forgivness compared to the 565 and j15mb. They flightable/workable?

The topline is quite thin for such a forgiving club.

I have a PX LZ 6.0 in it, which is one of my favorite shafts. I have the same shaft in the J15 MB while the 565s have AMT S400. For me, nothing can beat the feel of a purely struck MB so best swing for best swing, the J15 MB wins the feel category. In real life, those pure strikes are somewhat rare.

The 565 and DBM are pretty close in feel and I'd say both have a good, smooth forged feel. The DBM might feel a touch harder but that may be my ears playing tricks on me because they are a touch clickier than the 565s. I had some 714 AP2s and thought they sounded clicky and the DBM sound reminds me of them.

As for performance, the DBM is very forgiving. IMO it is really close to the 565s which I think are very forgiving irons. I tend to dig so the sole on the 565 works a little better for me. I think the DBM looks better than the 565s. The 565 short irons look a little bloated. I think the DBM gives a little harsher feedback on toe shots (my usual miss) than the 565 but distance doesn't really suffer. I'd say they are neck and neck in that category. I'm not really good enough to consistently try to flight shots low/high but messing around on the range I'm able to hit 1/2 or 3/4 punch-type shots without the ball getting higher than I want. Like many others have said, the DBMs really shine with high(er) shots. They are easy to launch. I'm not really a high spin player and the DBM didn't really spin any more or less than other irons I've tried. Distance is virtually the same with the DBM as any other club I've tried.

I've come really close to buying a set of DBM heads multiple times. Honestly I don't know what has stopped me. I have had irons shafts and can do my own work so it would be a relatively cheap set of irons for me. And the black finish wears extremely well. I use mine as a practice club and never really bother to wipe it off between shots. Finish is still holding up well...can tell it is used but doesn't really have that color loss on the face like so many other black finish clubs get.

Awesome review. Did u ever hit the srixon 765. Because size and designwise it seems thats a better match then the 565. However im glad to hear Theyre as forgiving.

Ive also heard that The DBM finish can make them a tad firmer and clickier. Makes me wonder if i should opt for the standard TE instead as ive heard theyre softer. But man the DBM look so good

I have a DBM 7 iron with Excalibur graphit shaft. It is one sweet looking club, if you like that murdered out look. I haven’t hit it as well as my typical set (ping i20). But have contemplated buying a set about 4 times. I haven’t do e my usual range work this year. Once I can hit it again I may end up getting some. Good strikes feel great but my thin miss feels like my old mizunos. Like I missed it.

The finish is hand down, no questions asked, the best black finish in the golf market. I was told it was forged from an actual black material, hence why the wear isn’t bad compared to other black clubs that are painted.

They are slightly firmer compared to the TE, as indicated by them not bending as easily in a loft/lie unit. The DBM will last a lot longer, not 'ding' as easily, groove wear etc etc....and I agree that it's the best dark finish ever made

The Xcaliber shafts are awesome. I have the red iron shaft and I thought it was a heavier version (100ish grams) than the one they were selling recently but maybe not. I wish I could find a few to build some more hybrids.

Love the look and slightly longer blade length, reminds me of my J40 DPC. How about some steelfiber i95's to go along with the DBM heads? That might make a nice club

I haven't hit the 765 but have hit the 745, but only a limited amount. I would agree that design wise they are very similar. From my limited experience I'd say they are similar in forgiveness, maybe the DBM is ever so slightly more forgiving with those toe shots. But again, I've had very limited experience with the 745 so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

I think that's a good comparison for blade length. I had forgotten about the J40 DPC, which is sad because I played them for a couple of years and really liked them.
