Maltby DBM/MMB/TE Forged Question

The only complaint I have with the DBM finish is inability to tweak lies more than 1*, but everything I heard is Golfworks is really top-notch about hand-picking to the closes requested spec, if requested.

 

I've bent them at least 2*, no problem. They're definitely not as easy to move as a standard finish forged

 

You are a braver man than my clubmaker! (And, me. I don't blame my clubmaker for following Maltby guidelines on bending the DBM.)

 

Do you think the new Maltby offering is going to be some type of "player's cavity" between the DBM and MMB Black? I wonder if it could be a progressive / combo set that blends the two heads together, from cavity long irons to blade short irons and wedges?

 

I'm happy with my MMB. If I can't pick up an extra 5 yards with some offseason workouts and speed training, I will probably replace my MMB 4- and 5-irons with DBMs for a little extra elevation...

Based on what they've hinted at, my guess is that it's a players cavity....and I would be surprised if it doesn't have a higher AVCOG than the TE/DBM. Other than that, I have no clue.

 

The MMB's are good combo-ish set, for those that like that concept, but don't want a real small extra thin top-line profile

What is it that you don't get? Not all cavitybacks will play alike. For example, the TE/DBM have a low AVCOG (sweetspot). Something else could have a higher sweetspot....and play a bit different.

 

The Golfworks, like any other company, has to at least come out with some new "different" designs every couple years. Although it's nice that they are willing to keep designs available and current that are popular, like the TE/DBM. All the other big companies, never do this, because in today's retail environment they're "forced" to keep pumping out new designs every year or so

Oh i know that. But the way i see it they have irons that fit that bill with the mmb and te/dbm. Really the mmb arent true blades. They are a CB size with CB performance. The mmb has the mb look and the dbm has a CB look.

 

Now if they made something with a small profile whether cb or mb that would make sense.

It’s got that look. But as a prior poster said, it’s crazy forgiving and launches high. It’s really more SGI than players cavity.

As suspected its gonna be inbetween. But who knows that that means. To me the mmb actually look bigger and bulkier then the dbm. So is the new love child bigger then the dbm? Is it constant offset or progressive.

 

Also what material will they be. As it is now mmb are much harder 8620 steel compared to dbm 1035

The MMB's have a slightly shorter blade length and a thicker top-line than the TE/DBM. They also have a higher AVCOG (sweetspot).

 

8620 is actually about as soft as 1035 forged. It's what they use when they want to make a softer 'cast' model....or what they sometimes refer to as "form forged". For reference, traditional Cleveland and Vokey wedges have been made from 8620 for years

For certain they are a value priced formed forging that is hard to beat. But do remember that when you decide to sell them, the value will be south of 25% of the original cost, even if they are less than a year old. Most components are a tough sale.

Not to mention losing 75% on a $300 set of irons is still better than 50% on $1199

Excited to see these new Maltbys. I am a big fan since I don't know of a single other company of this quality you can order component heads directly from without being a dealer/official builder. Great irons, but I see how they could release something smaller and less forgiving.

They're not in the business of "smaller and harder to hit". I don't expect to ever see any iron design from them, with a shorter blade length than the current MMB.

 

Going back over a decade now, they had a full muscleback set with 2mm constant offset, called the Toski T54. They had a slightly lower AVCOG than the TE/DBM....and were probably the easiest to hit blades of all time. It would be nice if they had this design available again with new graphics, but they most likely can't justify it (not enough units sold)

The "effective bounce" is relatively higher than what the specs might indicate. I don't think anyone but the more extreme diggers, would consider them to have a dig tendency

It sounds like its gonns be a slightly larger profile then the DBM. More like a 900F/ap2 size and backing.

I think I'm going to replace my 5 iron with the 25* because it's a lot more versatile.

Anyone play the DBM's with KBS Tour V? Debating having a 7 iron built to test. I'm thinking about trying it and seeing then selling it off to someone else to try out so we can demo.
