Driving Iron shaft weight

Recommended Posts

Have a 2 iron with an AD-DI hybrid 95gram shaft in it

I was gaming 130 gram iron shafts when i built it, but i recently changed to 105 gram iron shafts

thinking the weight may not make sense anymore

i have the typical 65g driver shaft and 75g 3w shaft

Wondering people's thoughts on re-shafting lower in the driving iron

One of the ones i was eyeing was around 75 grams....wondering if that is just too low?

Advice on the shaft weight i should consider please?

appreciated

I’ve got an S400 in my TMB and S300 in my irons. I don’t really understand why so many have a graphite shafts in the DI’s. Why not just use the same shaft as the rest of your irons?

If you are playing it at a standard 2 iron playing length, that shaft could still be fine. Are you having any particular problems with it since you went down in weight in the rest of your irons?

not really, but it is a recent change

it does feel a little hefty when I move from 4 iron in the 105 to this club though

thinking it will become a bigger issue

wanted to canvass views

as an example, if I dropped around 25 grams from the 130 modus stiff to this 95 s shaft (124 grams to 98 g), moving the same from the 105s would get me around 80 g ....? thoughts?

Its not just about weight - We swing differently from the tee and fairways.

I had a similar dilemma with my MP18 FliHi 3 iron. Started with a PX LZ 6.0 which was very close in weight to the shaft in my irons. But realized that off the tee (which is how I use that club), my swing and tempo are very different than the more controlled and smoother iron shots from the fairway.

Could be that I should swing differently, but as every golfer on here knows it’s the equipment and not the player! Switched to a moderately heavy graphite shaft (AD TI 105) and it’s much, much better.

Tinker away and figure out what works for you.

I would get your DI and 4 iron swing weighted, that might be causing the feel difference.

+1. I have C-Tapers 2-iron down to the wedges. I love that consistency and I could never really understand a bag that uses 6 different shafts. I have 2 - one for my woods and one for my irons. In a game so centred around consistency, why turn your shaft selection into a rainbow?

Okay. Like others have said, check swing weight. At those relative lengths, in order to get to a similar swing weight the 2 iron head would have to be relatively heavier than the rest of your irons.

If I️ were you, and this is how my clubs are set up, I’d put the same shaft you have in your irons in the 2 iron. Since you’re not playing the 2 iron over length relative to your other irons, that’ll be an easy way to get a consistent feel between them.

I would not go that low in weight with a driving iron. If you want something lightweight, switch to a hybrid or fairway wood. The point of a DI is to keep the ball down, so they tend to pair better with heavier shafts.
