Circle City Chili Dipper- Indy Golf Thread

Hey guys - can anyone recommend a course for me and a buddy this Saturday? I originally wanted to play Prairie View since I've heard great things about it, but my playing partner is concerned about getting beat up since he's not played much this year (or, he could be hung up on the $89 price and doesn't want to tell me). I'll be in town for a soccer tourney at North Central HS and need to stay relatively close to that area so I can get back for the last game.

ย

So...are there any other recommendations for a couple of good courses to check out that are within 15-20 minutes of NCHS? And by good, I mean great conditioning, fun/interesting hole layouts, good pace of play.

ย

TIA!

Plum Creek is as well conditioned (possibly better) and quite a bit easier than Prairie View. Other than that, you could look into the Fort, but it is likely as challenging as Prairie View. Other than a few holes on the back, PV isnโ€™t that punishing. They tend to keep the rescue relatively sparse there. Wherever you go Iโ€™d be sure to call and inquire about greens aeration as that is quickly coming up on maintenance schedules. It will be a bit cheaper also, especially if youโ€™re a senior.

Thanks for the input on alternative Indy coursees. We're gonna play PV after all - found a $65 GN deal and assured my buddy he should be able to manage it from the white tees. Looking forward to finally playing in Indy. I used to travel there for work a ton (driving from Chicago) and never really had the ability to build in extra time for golf. Big mistake...big, big mistake.

Plenty of good courses close to 65 on your way as well...

Trophy Club in Lebanon

Kampen and Ackermann courses at Purdue

Coyote Crossing in West Lafayette

Sandy Pines in De Motte

Great round at Prairie View today. We teed off at 12:03 with a single and played the front in about 1:30 without butting against anyone in front. Hit a twosome chasing another twosome once we got to 11, but the round still only took about 3:45.

ย

This was my first time on PV and it was a nice course. Thereโ€™s really a stark difference between the front and back - the front is more wide open, while the back is more tree+lined. Fortunately for my playing partner, they cut down most of the fescue on the front side.

ย

The course was in great shape, with the greens running true and at a decent speed. Iโ€™d definitely go back for another round.

ย

Edit: so many typos from phone.

Generally speaking, Prairie View is just about always in better shape (even if only slightly) than anything else in the area. They get a ton of play so in the middle of the summer the greens can get beat up from the amount of play but compared to everything else it's usually better. It's just trying to weigh the price point out there compared to similar places. Bear Slide and Trophy Club are usually close in conditions (unless we've had a ton of rain, bear slide at least handles rain very poorly) but are both 15-30 bucks less.

DeeBee30, PV hosts our annual boys and girls state HS championships. Just an FYI. It's a good'n.

Hope soccer went well and that you experienced Hoosier Hospitality.

Yeah, I'm not sure if we'd have played it for the full rack rate, but I got a GN Hot Deal for $65 that made it a pretty easy decision. The layout, conditioning and pace of play made it worth every penny for that price. I do want to hit Bear Slide and Trophy Club, as well as Purgatory and Brickyard, on future trips and will always be on the lookout for deals to soften the financial blow a little.

Dr - I asked the pro shop how the greens were running compared to the practice green and he said they should be a little slower on the course, running at about a 10, while the practice green was a 10.5. I can't pretend that I can tell where green speeds fall on the official stimpmeter, but I'll say that PV's greens, while running at a decent speed, were nowhere near some of the privates I've played that say their greens are at around 11. If they normally run a little faster out there, I'd love to have another crack at it with quicker greens. The faster the better in my book, as long as they're still somewhat receptive.

ย

Yes, I enjoyed the course. It lived up to the recommendations I received on this thread!

ย

As for soccer, it was a mixed bag with a 1-2 tourney record, but the boys had some fun and the local HS teams we played showed good sportsmanship. This was my son's last trip to this tourney (he's now a senior), and it's provided some great memories for him and his teammates.

ย

FWIW, we also got to sample some nice local places like Wolfie's, The District Tap and Graeter's Ice Cream. We topped off the weekend by grabbing dinner with some of my local family at Cooper's Hawk, which is one of our favorites from around home in Chicago. Overall, I've always liked Indy.

Early in the season they can be amongst the fastest around here, especially around the HS tournament time. But, as suggested, with the multitude of events and regular play they get, it can wear on them. They had an event Friday morning, and I went off right after they cleared the course, paired up with some guys that had just played the event. So they showed wear. Glad you enjoyed it though!

The weather has not been great for fast greens this year. At the beginning of the season everything was rolling exceptionally well, they could cut them as low as they wanted and with all the rain they had no fear of losing them. Early June especially Plum Creek and Chatham Hills were two that I really noticed had to both be around a 12-13 which was really nice to putt on perfect fast greens. Then July-August we had basically no rain. If they were going to cut them short to get them rolling they really had to water the crap out of them to make sure they didn't lose them, which obviously brings in the chance for more disease especially with 95% humidity every day if you're not letting them dry out long enough before the dew hits. At least that's what they were saying at our club as to why they were keeping them slow this year compared to last, they could have been just spewing crap I'm not a superintendent.

Oh I forgot to mention, @bobcat I did make it out to Chatham Hills and you were not wrong it is an awesome track. All of that undulation and length in central Indiana was really unique. In particular that approach into 15 (and the tee shot to an extent not really knowing what to hit) 50 yards uphill tree lined was just spectacular. 18 as the finishing hole again with the crazy undulation and protected green was such a great hole to end on. It was not an easy course for seeing it the first time. Greens rolled fast and perfect but were not receptive (obvious I guess based on them being a year old) and I think I went OB twice, maybe three times on balls that hit the green and just took a massive hop like it was concrete ending up maybe 6 inches to a couple feet OB (for sure on 13, that OB and cart path behind the green just felt like a personal attack with their placement in relation to the green and pin position that day and again on 17, one bounce on the green like concrete, over the back snake bunker, onto the car the path). I was told to expect it, I was told to play a club less and it was still just a shock seeing it hole after hole. Looking forward to finding my way out there again sometime to have another crack at it.

Week of 9/30 looks good for the moment. Rock Hollow is on my mind.

Paul, is there a certain day or time you can getaway? Anyone?

Tuesday's and or Friday's I'm usually able to leave early 1:30ish or earlier. Rock Hollow looks to be about 2 hours from me?? Anywhere closer would be easier during the week. Although this Friday is out because I've got plans. Do need to get out again so I'm in if it works for everybody...whenever.
