Circle City Chili Dipper- Indy Golf Thread

We spent more time hunting for balls than playing golf. Didn't matter if we were 30 yards or 3 yards off the fairway/green. The rough was that thick and full, well beyond ankle deep. The fairways have not grown in very well, at least not what I expected from last year. They definitely have drainage issues on a couple holes.

I did par 7 holes. And still hung my worst round of the year... but 7 doubles a triple and a quad while losing 7 balls will do that.

Wanted to give some love to Buffer Park. This little course is become a favorite of mine. The staff is fantastic, and the course is in great shape! Played it last week, and its always a blast. I recommend anyone that get the chance to play to GO!

I don’t know how you make a list of the top 30 public access courses in indiana and not include Bear Slide, Royal Hylands, or Glendarin Hills. But this is someone’s attempt at it I guess. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I also thought Maple Creek was private, though this lists it as public access.

LOL the guy wearing a golf glove in a TV studio.

I'm a member at Maple Creek, it is indeed private.

As for the Pfau Course ... whew, played it two weeks ago with seven buddies and everyone left in despair. Even our 4 handicap didn't break 90. We all knew the land as students when it was the old IU course, which could play long and woody but fine for the young hackers we were. An IU student (or anyone else) who is a novice golfer should stay far, far away from the Pfau.

Ackerman at Purdue Sunday afternoon.  Great condition.

West Chase GC in Brownsburg Monday.  Enjoyed the layout.  Staff was super friendly and helpful.

Guess we're just not cool enough for the big cat anymore.

Coyote was in fantastic shape. Well worth the price of admission. Fun layout, different types of holes throughout. Highly recommend.

Might get out Friday close to home if anyone is interested. Also trying to find a time to do 36 at Purdue - hoping next Wednesday is possible when the tee sheet opens up tonight if anyone is interested.

Sorry I didn't get pics of Zollner but it was in great shape.

Anyone at Prairie View for the boys state championship yesterday or today?  PV's in great shape.  Fun day.

I did par 7 holes. And still hung my worst round of the year... but 7 doubles a triple and a quad while losing 7 balls will do that.

Played Pfau on Friday, then both courses (Ross/Dye) at French Lick Sat/Sun.

I thought Pfau was an amazing track... amazing vistas and some amazing holes

Definitely needs some more time with growing in the secondary rough (there are basically 3 levels of rough....sodded bluegrass that's maybe 5 yards wide which was in great shape,  then another 10 yards or so of gnarly rough that was not well grown in,  then the deep fescue). Fairways were for the most part great,  but were spots here and there that had issues.  Definitely some drainage problems on a few of them.  Greens were flawless, fast and very, very firm. The course has a definite rough and brutish feel to it.

We played the Blue tee markers (6700),  but it seemed that on at least half the holes they were placed where the Black markers were supposed to be (7k). Probably should have played a tee up considering the wind and the elevation changes.

There was debate within our group which was harder,  Pfau or French Lick Dye. I felt Dye was harder,  as it felt a harder driving course. Outside of a couple holes,  the Pfau course had pretty wide landing areas before you were in the junk.  But a couple in our group felt  Pfau was tougher due to some of the extreme bunkering styles right up against the greens. Didn't help that we played all the courses in 20-30 mph winds the entire time. I lost only 1 ball at Pfau and 4-5 at Dye.... but a lot of that was just driving it better that day.

I'd highly recommend grabbing a yardage book for Pfau in the shop. As having not played it before,  picking lines without the book would have been very tough.  And it's not on any GPS apps yet.  I do think for the price level they should put books on the carts or better yet add cart GPS, as it's the type of course where it's really needed

You could play Pfau 4 times for the price of the Dye course.... FWIW. And I think they are fairly comparable in uniqueness and difficulty. Dye was in flawless condition,  as always to be expected there.

The Ross course is enough for me in 20-30 mph wind.  I'd be super disappointed to pay hundreds for the Dye and have to play in those conditions.  That's just me though.

We were smart enough to move up a tee and play the whites there at Dye.  At 6100, it played more like 6600 with the wind and the elevation.  Was still a fabulous day.  That's such a wild course you can't help but have fun, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

I need everyone to go play west chase in brownsburg whenever you get the chance. It’s a really nice track with a fun layout great combination of holes to keep it interesting. Staff was friendly and it was in pretty good shape.

Tri-Ponds Golf Course, 7 miles West of Tipton, Indiana.

Guy built a small 18 hole course around his house (par 60, I think).  Front 9 is OK.  Back 9 a little scrubby, but hey, it's still golf.  Locals tend to play the front twice.

At $9 to walk it, if you don't expect much more than friendly people and cold beer then you'll have fun.

It was a trip... and I'll be back... sometime.

Hello to the group.  Our golf group (20 players) is taking our annual golf trip to Indianapolis this year.   I am from Phoenix and I am happy I found this thread.  I have read all 37 pages and have enjoyed the read, sounds like a great group.  I feel like I know many of you now, haha.  We will be playing TH Sep 23- SUN Sep 27.  The courses have informed me there will be no maintenance or aerating until Oct, I hope that holds true.  Looking for insight- we are playing Bear Slide Fri, Fort Sat and Trophy Club Sun.

Based on current course conditions, do you all think that’s a good rotation?   I read all your posts re: Royal Highlands, is it a better choice than 1 of these 3?

For Thursday we would like to stay close to our hotel in Fishers- do we play Prairie View, Plum Creek or River Glen?  Is Prairie View worth the higher green fee compared to the other 2 options?

Guys in the group do not want to pay the $130 Brickyard fee.  We range in hdcp from 10-24.  We are looking for fun, scenic courses that are in good condition.

Thank you, I appreciate any insight and look forward to your replies,

Manny
