I probably should’ve renewed my legends membership. It’s still a great deal, but thought I’d play hickory stick way more. Prices there have gone at hickory stick up as they no longer offer a walking rate. I see lots of buffer park and martinsville in my future.

I like that martinsville course.  How's construction down that way now?  Did they figure out their driving range or still closed due to the highway?

The construction is way better than it was last year. They are pretty much "done" in Martinsville. Now up north in Johnson County near my house is another story. Ugh.

The range is just smaller now. Last I played it the driving range was open. Haven't been to MGC in 2022 though.

You're welcome to join us anytime @Indy_Sly, we have a bunch of us that met here and play when we can. We play all over the area - like a few of us were at Coyote Crossing in Lafayette yesterday. Looking to get out Wednesday and Saturday this week personally. Just shoot me a message and we can get out.

How was coyote crossing? I’m planning to get up there myself in a few weeks.

Doc,

Thanks again for putting the Hickory Stick round together.  Great time.

Jake,

If you see this, thanks for the $4 putting lesson.  Impressive and humbling.

Last Sunday I played Sahm GC, and then I played South Grove, only because it will be permanently closed soon.

Yesterday I played Culver Academy and then Rock Hollow, BOTH incredible golf courses!

This news was announced a while back. Like pre Covid a while back. Last article I can find from WTHR says it will be in use until at least 2024. http://greenstreetltd.com/2019/08/05/city-to-repurpose-some-public-golf-courses/ This says through 2024 with the timing too.

Funny story actually. When the news came out back in 2019 that South Grove would be closing my dad and his golfing buddy went out and played it. The weather that day was crappy and it was really early spring. I was shocked they played and when I asked why he told me because it was closing soon and they played a ton of golf there growing up. They wanted one last round for sentimental reasons.

Well of course they only read the first half of the article. We got a good laugh out of it when I told them the closing date was 4-5 years away 😂

Love Rock Hallow and the price is hard to beat. How were the conditions? It’s a Tim Liddy course and Liddy did a ton of work with Pete Dye. Holes 7, 8, and 18 stand out as something you would see on a Dye course to me. A few of courses built later in Dyes career we’re really Liddy courses with a Dye name for marketing.

It was recently announced that Liddy is doing the restoration at PGA West Stadium Course. Idk what was all his but he did some work at Bulle Rock not long ago too.

Envious of your round at Culver. I would love to get up there some day. There was a rumor floating around that colts owner Jim Irsay wanted to purchase it for himself but I haven’t heard much more about it.

Conditions at Rock Hollow Golf Club were absolutely PERFECT. Pics are posted in my travel thread.

I highly doubt Isray is buying any piece of Culver Academy, even their golf course.

Foursome heading to Indy for a long weekend in late August. Playing 36/36/18, probably staying in the Carmel area.

Thinking Purdue one day, Purgatory/Bear Slide another and then Brickyard on the 18 day.

Any tips or suggestions on hotels/restaurants/courses?

This is a solid lineup. It’s about 60-80

min from Carmel to Purdue, though I assume you’re doing that coming in? If you can’t play them consider Coyote Crossing and Trophy Club.

There are new hotels in Fishers on 116th street that are probably worth considering (Hyatt and courtyard I think). Both are in an area that’s walkable to bars and restaurants and are across the road from top golf. Easy off/on from i-69 or to state route 37 when you go to purgatory. There is a ton of construction going on in the area so add a few minutes to any travel time.

Let us know when you’re about to come down and we can update on conditions. I did not recommend The Fort for this reason - by late august it’ll be bombed out.

Yeah, honestly it's one I'm willing to skip due to price and the CPO rule - but the rest of the group wants to play it.

I think any outsiders trip to Indy it’s worth sucking it up to play, and they know that. The experience inside the track is unique. If you haven’t been there you really have no idea the size of the track complex until you step on the 7th tee.

That said It’s not a $175 course. But it’s always in great shape and has character even outside the track. Fun gambling course with the closing stretch from 14-18.

I take this trip every year down from Chicago the week before the race and during the qualifying. Being inside the track while the cars are racing is an experience second to known, without it its probably $50 too expensive. Purgatory is in my top 5 Midwest courses and their 100 ingredient bloody mary is excellent. Last year I was a little disappointed in Kampen's conditions at Purdue. Enjoy the trip!!

Ooo sounds like a good trip. I agree that at $175 brickyard is overpriced but I do think it’s without a doubt the best course in the area. I haven’t played it since it went CPO but I have heard it doesn’t get a ton of play and that should help with pace of play.

I’ve only played Kampen but have some buddies that actually prefer Ackerman. Fair to say that both of the Purdue courses are very good.

If you are taking overs advice and staying around 69/116th street you may be tempted to play plumb creek based on proximity, but I wouldn’t recommend it. All of the courses you have listed are much better.

Have you considered Prairie View? It’s close by and a nice course. I rank it ahead of Purgatory.

I don’t have a ton of insight to add for hotels in the area. Ale Emporium should be on the list for dinner one night. Some of the best wings around and good beer selection. There are a couple north side locations and there should be one close regardless of where you stay. Mashcraft is my favorite brewery in the area. Im not a big fan, but The Yard is a newer development in fishers and has a collection of restaurants/bars, etc all in a small area. I do recommend the 1933 lounge. It’s a slimmed down version of St. Elmo’s. The steakhouse is downtown and an Indianapolis institution. If you aren’t willing to make the drive, 1933 Lounge isn’t a terrible substitute. They are famous for their shrimp cocktail.

Thank you guys for the feedback. Sounds like we're going to skip Brickyard and do the following:

Thursday: 36 @ Bear Slide and Purgatory

Friday: 36 @ Kampen and Ackerman-Allen

Saturday: 18 TBD.

Considering driving the hour up to Peru after all the great things I've read about Rock Hollow. Prairie View is also an option.

My votes for Rock Hollow but I didn't catch which direction you're heading afterwards.

Every time I play RH I see some sort of interesting wildlife (DrOldSchool withstanding).  Love that track.  Should cost you much less as well.
