What format do you usually play? Match or medal?

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be interesting to see what format WRX golfers play.

Match play includes fourball or any other format where the contest winner is determined hole by hole.

Medal play is either no match or the contest winner is determined by total score for the round.

I suspect the format will differ between private club members and non private club members.

Edit: Polls require that you post a selection for BOTH questions, so check the last selection if that question does not apply to you. Sorry for the confusion.

We mostly play in team better ball "medal" play, which has some elements of match play with respect to how the round is played out; but at the end of the day, it's net/gross medal.

How can you play "better ball medal play" ? Do you add up the best score on each hole and the total low score wins?

I posted. Medal for both. But we're already been discussing it in the other thread (which is how I learned you started a poll).

Roadking, would it help if people indicated where they are? Give a different perspective for both different countries, and even different areas within the countries?

Four ball is the usual if playing in a foursome. Straight match if just a twosome.

I like the 9 points game if playing as a threesome:

  • The golfer with the lowest score of the group gets 5 points;
  • The golfer with the middle score is awarded 3 points; and
  • The golfer with the high score gets 1 point.
  • With easy adjustments for ties.

Teams of four. Lowest individual score (gross and net) on each hole is the team score. Lowest total team score (gross and net) wins. Pretty standard format.

It “plays” a bit like match play, because if you get to the point where you can’t win the hole outright (among your teammates), you’re out of the hole.

We do that game too when it’s just three. But we always also have individual nassaus going, no matter what other game we are playing. So we are always keeping a medal score.

Agreed. I voted "Almost all match play." I tend to like 9 point better than having a match going against each individual, but it's just another way to get at the match play setup.

I certainly could be wrong, but my understanding is that (except with certain limited exceptions) the USGA requires a player to post every round.

I am under the impression that therefore anyone playing under the auspices of the USGA handicapping system is required to keep a stroke play total for posting purposes, even where the total aggregate strokes is completely irrelevant to the game(s) being played.

So oddly enough, we always have a medal total even though it is meaningless to the determination of who is on the hook for buying the first round.

Yes, but just in comments. This site's polling capabilities aren't that sophisticated.

I'm sure it probably originated that way, but I think the tern Nassau has evolved to where it applies more to a front, back, and total bet, regardless of the format.

This is where the "American's don't play match play" gets interesting. From a gambling perspective, we're always playing match play. I'm sure some people wager on total score (front/back/total) - but mostly it's hole-by-hole, most holes won on side. Which is match play.

The typical American game is oddly sort of both match and medal play at the same time.

Yeah, I’m sure the terminology “morphs” over time. We never play matchplay here. Our Front, Back, Total is 100% medal. I shoot 37, other two shoot 36 each, I lose the front to both. Our press option comes in here where we can press the back nine. Not a new wager like with the “automatic 2 down” in match play, just a double up bet on the back.
