Launch monitors under $500

What are you even talking about? The “chip” in the units is simple. That’s not where the cost is. Flightscope worked on the mevo for YEARS before it came out. The units aren’t close as to what is measured vs what is calculated. And there’s a reason that when setup correctly the accuracy level is significantly better. Most aren’t measuring launch angle and spin.

Again what are you talking about? I didn’t say they invented a chip. Again the hardware is by far the easiest and the cheapest part.

I know exactly what Flightscope develops and how they develop it and the amount of R&D involved. I also have a good bit of knowledge of engineering and R&D (more mechanical than electrical). I develop products in multiple niche activities, including golf. I do the design, development, cad drawing, solid modeling in some cases, and the making of prototypes. I also wrote and developed software programs in college.

Above $500, would you guys say Xi Tour is the best bang for the buck unit out there? I believe it’s the cheapest launch monitor with ball and club data. I plan to use it on driving range and golf courses. I don’t plan to use it inside to play virtual golf.

I would be interested in the mevo +. Skytrak has owned the market at 2k for a while for shitty hardware.
Broke down last summer and brought the Mevo for 450. as @iteachgolf mentioned if setup correctly its damn accurate.
AIm the mevo correctly and give it a good FOV and it's probably within a yard or two.

New Mevo+ sounds interesting. Would certainly love to have a launch monitor for outdoor use at the range or backyard net. Personally, I just don't want to have to install any dots on balls or clubfaces, but perhaps I should stop being lazy.

I called Flightscope and asked about the Mevo+, they said it’s geared towards consumer and simulation purposes. It will not give much club data. So the Tour Xi is still the best option for practicing and club tweaking purposes. Currently, the Tour Xi is on sale again for $7500 (normally $9000).

Sounds like $7500 is the cheapest you can get in for a launch monitor that gives more data and more accurate....not that it is cheap.

For sure, I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I’ll write something up from a personal practice and club tweaking point of view.

I plan to check my kid’s average distance for each club, grouping for each club, establish a firm 20 and 30 yard pitch shot, maximize driver distance through AoA/loft, do a comparison between 3 driver shafts (Grand Bassara, Recoil, and Flynn), compare Cobra Jr F8 to the new Jr SZ, and take it to the course to get some feed back while playing.

Most important of all, I want it to show my kid how swing adjustments and impact quality affects distance and ball flight.

I think the mevo+ will be accurate enough. Looks like there might even be AOA. Just the like the skytrack I would say is accurate enough, we are not talking about PGA professionals here. From what I've seen the mevo+ will come in at $2K will be a great competitor especially if AOA is on there. Will sure beat $7K+ when you can do most of the same on one of these devices.

I'm really surprised at the early details on MEVO+. If I were a Xi+ owner I'd probably be more than a little mad. The early word is it will have one less data parameter than Xi+. Apparently, FlightScope customer service is telling Xi+ users MEVO+ will not devalue their investment.

FWIW, OP, I'm a MEVO owner and it is the only sub $500 unit you should consider for a developing junior golfer. The video editing feature is incredible and the unit is accurate enough for the distance, total spin, and launch angles you desire.

The difference is you get club data with the Tour Xi. As far as I know club data shows you “why”, while ball data is just the outcome. Distance accuracy alone for sure would not justify the price difference.

Do you have to put the silver dots on the ball to get some of the ball data with the Xi Tour? Or any silver dots on the clubface for that data?

Good question, but I’m not sure... I believe silver dot on the ball is only needed indoors (to better track the spin rate due to short flight distance). For outdoors I don’t think you need the dot. As for silver dots on the club face, I think that’s only for GC Quad (camera based).

Oh God. I finally did the Video feature last weekend for my son for some college clips. Whoa! That little thing is so cool.

 

We own a GC2/HMT for simulation purposes in the garage. The Mevo is just as accurate IMHO on the range as the GC2( 60degree-7iron )

Do they state which of these are measured vs calculated? Appears to be in the SkyTrak price range, so at some point, it should be able to be had for a discount of 15-20% off retail.
