2018 Srixon Irons

Recommended Posts

I was fit for my first ever set of irons at the weekend. I've gone from 18 to a 13 handicap this season and hope to keep improving. I have played a set of store bought Speedblade HL irons with a uniflex shaft for the last 4 or 5 years.

The fitter (Nick Hibbs who was fantastic BTW) had me hit a few shots with my gamer 7 iron. I was carrying it 160yds however the launch (15), peak height (76ft) and descent angle (42) were a bit low meaning that shots were rolling out 12 yards.

He had me an assortment of irons (JPX Forged, AP2, P790, i500 and Apex as well as the Z585 and Z785) and narrowed it down to the Srixons and the Ping.

He then experimented with a few shafts to help with my launch and spin. I think we tried Project X LZ, KBS C Taper Lite and Modus 105 all in stiff. As soon as i hit the Modus 105 i knew it was the one for me, I could feel the shaft load properly for the first time when hitting irons.

Once settled on the Z785 with the Modus shaft we started to tinker with loft and lie. He ended up with a set up 2 deg upright to help with dispersion and 2 deg weak to help with spin and launch. My ball speed was up 3mph to 117. Carry was up to 165mph even with drastically weaker lofts to my gamer. Launching at 17.6 with a peak height of 94ft and land angle of 48 deg.

As its my first set of non-GI irons I've gone with Z585 in the 4-6 and Z785 7-AW just to help that transition.

The order is in and once he gets them built I should be able to get them out on the course early next week. Cant wait!

A great story. That’s a quality build a scratch golfer also could play, which is what is so great about Srixon’s lineup since the z45 series onward. Congrats.

With respect. Swing weight matters greatly to even higher handicaps. If youdont believe me. Watch the TXG video on “fitting means more than just buying clubs”. Its actually me. I unknowingly ha

Warning to anyone placing an order for 785 irons, Srixon is out of certain heads and won't have those heads in stock until November. I placed my order on 10/11 and now the irons aren't expected to ship until 11/12. Everything else I ordered (bag, balls, u85, driver, and fairways) appears to have shipped individually because I was given 5 separate tracking numbers.

I ordered the U85 3-5 and 785 6-PW. Cant wait to get them and play TP myself. Nice round mtex.

SMUGamer Are you happy with that combo? Thinking of a U85 4-6 785 5-AW combo.

Yes, its working great so far. Don't see me changing a thing. I went U85/785 combo because I just didn't like the black cavity of the 585 and it worked out perfectly. Did you mean U85 4-6 and 785 7-AW?

Yes, correct! Typo...

Do you have the same shafts in the U85 as in the 785? What about length? I can see that the 4 in U85 is a bit longer than the 4 in the 785... Just wondering how to match them, either order standard or shorten the U85 a bit....

Yes, I have the same Project X 6.5's in my U85's and did not shorten the length - standard LLL for all irons including the 785's. I may have to get lofts adjusted when I go see if I have any gaps on the monitor which I plan to do shortly.

Thanks for the input. Ledning towards Project X LZ 6.0 myself. Prob smart not to mess with lengths and lofts initially. Very excited about next season. #srixon

I think that is right. I would order standard so they swing weight appropriately, then modify after you've really done the work on a monitor with a fitting specialist. I'm gong to club champion to get all lofts & lies dialed in..........

Only thing I keep hearing is that Srixon wont match swing weight. Ie if standard swing weight is D3 w Nippon Modus 120 (which weighs 114 grams) and you put in PX LZ 6.0 at 120 they wont try to get the SW to D3, it will be where ever it ends up. Also U85 sw is different from 785. Did you notice any difference or did they match SW for you? May I ask at what swing weight do you have then?

I emailed Srixon customer service in regards to swingweight as I would play mine 3/4 inch over with an oversize grip. There response was " we have no way to manipulate swing wieght without effecting the playability of the clubs". They then went on to suggest I order a heavier shaft if I want to increase swingweight. Idiots!!!

Have they never heard about tip weights? How do they fix the SW for tour players, they are usually very picky about that sort of thing.

Only care about a driving iron release

Hopes: low offset, slightly smaller bulk/sole than u65/45, drop the super light stock shaft, offer hybrid shafts as custom upgrades, offer a 16* nuke model

Probably none of it will happen tho. These 70g stock shafts in driving irons are ridiculous to me

LOL, I guess so...you play Super Peening Blues in X. Even in your DF 3 iron. You are in the super minority my friend. Personally, I like the stock Miyazaki shaft, I don't really see any problems with it. I do agree though, that they should at least offer a couple of gorilla swinging shafts for their utility irons.

Haha listen I hear you man. But 70g in a driving iron is a minority play too? We gotta be closer to 100g if anything.

I’ve read far more posts of guys hating the stock 70 shaft and having to swap it immediately, then those who loved it. Both on wrx and hackers.

70 was way too light.....100 gr steel is considered lightweight in irons....to drop down to 70 is way too much.....

With respect. Swing weight matters greatly to even higher handicaps. If youdont believe me. Watch the TXG video on “fitting means more than just buying clubs”. Its actually me. I unknowingly had my SW at C8 due to the extra length and midsize grips. When Ian put me in a D3 SW my accuracy and distance improved greatly.

I requested in my special order D3-D4 swing weights. They feel just right (after 4 rounds) but won't know for certain until I go to our local club champion to check SW while getting lofts and lies checked.

Would the 785s be the equal to the jpx 919 hot metals or closer to the forged as far as forgiveness goes? Thanks

It is an inexact science, but I would place the 785 between the 919 Forged and 919 Tours based on design (Forged has a back-milled face to increase spring effect), blade length and sole. I would say the 585 matches up to the Hot Metals for same reasons.

585 are a fair bit smaller than the Hot Metal irons. MOI is much lower too. According to Maltby the 565's (they don't have the 585 yet) has a lower MOI than both the 900 Forged or Hot Metal. Mind you MOI isn't the only factor defining forgiveness, but it is a critical factor.

Don’t agree, D0 vs D4 is a feelable (is that a Word?) difference in terms of how well I can feel where the club face is during the swing. I dont want the U85 to be at D6 and the 785 to be at D1, why wouldnt you want to match. Its been done before, why can’t they fix it now? And IF you were a pgatour-player you most certainly would want it.

I own the JPX 850 Forged and just tested the 585’s.

Maybe because I am more of a digger / steep player the 585’s seemed more forgiving for me. Not a huge difference but enough I can tell. Also I think the Modus shaft might be better for my than the XP115

As you say many factors to consider in forgiveness.

Agree swing weight is VERY "feelable" especially D0 vs D4. U85 has a hotmelt port so swing weighting it is easy. I've already done 6 in my shop. In fact i'm selling a U45 right now in BST that i hotmelted.

So I picked up my new 585 irons the other day and finally got them on the course today. I can say I am extremely please. Great feel and they really gets the ball airborne quicker than my JPX-850 forged I am switching from. As a normal lower flight player it is nice to get a little more height and a few more yards as well. Might take some adjusting when the winds are up but nothing to be concerned about. Even a slightly thin shot gets up well. Great for my upright swing as a taller player.

Only 1 round but gotta say I think they are keepers for a long time!

3 rounds now in the books with the 585s.

So easy to hit , very high trajectory vs my old JPX-850 forged, and also longer by a good 5-7 yards per club. They might spin less than the JPX but not in a bad way. Still can hold a green with the long irons and the short irons stop where they land where the JOX would spin back , sometimes to my demise . I am sure the higher flight and longer hang time kills spin a little. Overall a very happy camper with these clubs.

Hate to say it, but 15+ rounds into my new 585's and I am getting rid of them. 565's I had before these were simply amazing but the 585's and me just don't get along. Not sure how to describe my issues with them other than they are "clunky". I believe I am having ground interaction issues, something I have never experienced. My misses are 90% of the time high on the face. I have run the gamut in the shop trying to make them work, they are loft and lie correct, they all weigh correctly, length correct etc. So, selling them and going back to my 2013 X Forged for now. Anyone interested in some Z585's Modus 105s for a great deal?
