Hybrids - Old Greats vs Current Greats- Thoughts.

Titleist 909H was a beast for me. Was like a mini 4 wood in distance.

Nickent 3DX genex was one of the first I ever used, easy to hit.

Ping G10 was the easiest one to get up in the air. It went high and landed softer than the others.

I have found that with some of the newer offerings, the shafts are just too light in them for me. I can't find consistent control of them. I have settled on a Ping G hybrid that seems to give the length with less dispersion I wanted.

I've got a few all time greats. Taylormade Rescue Dual TP 2 was a cannon for me. 16 degrees and steel shaft. I'd use that off most par 4's because I had no faith in my fairway wood.

Nike VR Pro with the stock project x 6.0 shaft was a beast too. I still play it. Low spinning high launching workable club for any lie. What more could you ask for!?!?

Ping Anser was really great too. Stock shaft just felt a bit light. But again, high launch low spin! I haven't bought anything newer than those and frankly, I don't see the need to!

I think hybrids have about a 5 year technology span. I had the original rescue mid TP, until I hit the adams idea pro, which was great until I hit the 917H1

I don't change often but have gained 30 yd from the first hybrid to the current.

I used to really love the original Taylormade Rescue Mids from about every lie. However, I did happen to hit a few shots heroically left. Since then, most of they hybrids I've had have been okay. Really liked the Callaway FT hybrid, had another Rescue 2011 one that was decent. The Cobra F7 I have now is absolutely fantastic. I still end up left occasionally (I can over draw any club that has been made), but it seems like I can go after it and if I miss left it is still at least on the golf course.

Mizuno MP650. Probably the best hybrid I've gamed off the tee. Going to compare them to a UDi.......

Is the 650 a deeper faced hybrid?

I think the easy answer is today's are more adjustable and can have better shaft options.

i'd throw in shape too. More company's are offering the fairway/hybrid and the iron/hybrid.

For me, Titleist nails it with the 816s - the H1 can play the fairway wood role and the H2 can plan the long iron role.

I've got the H1 19* and the H2 23* (truly my old man club - but man it's awesome) which is a great set up for me.

I don't really get low lofted iron style hybrids or high lofted wood style hybrids, but to each their own.

I've got to say the Nike VR_S hybrids are still one of my favorites. While these hybrids aren't what I would call real old they are 5 years plus old. I really like the shape of them. They look like little baby fairways & they're high, long & straight. May not be everyone's cup of tea visually but they hold their own with today's hybrids no question.

+1 here for me too. I've been gaming the 3 and 4 for over 5 years and they are dependable on pretty much every surface I have played them off of. Even holed out a few "hybrid chips" from the fringe on larger greens with them.

Modern bag:
Nike vr str8 fit tour set at 11
Ping rapture v2 4 wood
Nike vr_s 3 and 4 hybrids
Maltby mmb 5-pw
Carnahan 52/56/60 wedge
Rotating door of putters

Sunday/quick nine walker:
Callaway warbird deuce 2 wd
Callaway warbird 4 wd
Hogan apex pro 4-E
Ping eye 2 W and S
Ping cushin putter

Classic bag:
Palmer Chattanooga driver
Hogan Slotline 4 wd
Palmer Standard 85 3-pw
Same ping eye 2 sw
Wilson professional 600 putter

Thank you for this post, interesting. I am still gaming Ping I20 hybrids 17, 20, &23. I keep thinking about changing but tough to do when they are the most consistent clubs in the bag. The gapping is perfect from 215 to 190. Every year I think about a bag over haul from my S56iron/I20hybrid set-up to something newer but nothing how's me enough to make the switch.

Stil like my ole trusty DWS Cobras when I do play a hybrid.

I've got one in my bag as well. Very trustworthy off the turf with a 190 yard forced carry staring me down!

What shafts are you guys using in the DWS? I have one with the stock regular flex shaft and struggle with consistency with it. I have thought of reshafting but believe Cobra used fw shafts in their older Bafflers and wasn't sure what might work.

Mine have the factory NVs in them, but they’ve been trimmed to iron length. 20* is 39, 23* is 38.5 26* 38”. Work much better when they’re in the bag. No weight added but did put a Lamkin midsize grip on them.Works for me.

Just threw my 909h 19* back in the bag after using a couple 913's for a while... I really like the 913 but the 909 has a great sound and feel to me. The head is a little smaller but still big enough to inspire a little confidence. Fun club to hit... but it does like to go left on occasion. Started trying a 3i a little more but needs more work.

I have played a ton of hybrid clubs the past 10 years. I have had the aeroburner in the bag for 3 seasons and for some reason I just can’t let it go. I have purchased a few since I got the aeroburner and most recently purchased the g400 and the Mizuno CLK and still can’t give up on the burner... believe me I have tried... the thing is pretty beat up.

I recently purchased a new Mizuno iron set and G400lst Driver and 3 wood. I was sure one of those manufacturers would be able to put together a hybrid that could overtake my burner considering how much I love the irons and wood, but nope... Love me some Burner.

I was formerly carrying the Adams Dhy Pro 21, 24, and 27 hybrids and really liked them. The problem was, I would ever now and then, hit one PERFECTLY and instead of getting a club that would fly 215, 200, or 185...it would fly like 250, 230, and 210 or so. It was kind of cool in a sense to hit the thing so far...until the ball you were wanting to lay up to 215 because water was 240 out...would fly 250 into the drink.

I look to my driver for max distance, and to some extent, my 3 wood...but my hybrids...I want them to go a specific distance the overwhelming majority of the time...and picking up 30 yards on a hybrid, seems cool...but not something I really need. If that's what you want from those clubs...that's awesome though.

I went looking through my backup bags and remembered my 503H. Still kept them not sure why since I never could hit them well. But the shafts were the saving grace for me to hold on to them. Original speeder shafts. Not the made for models but legit! Might try to see if I can get them to work this season. Offset is a bit more than usual but man they're so good looking overall!

DWS with stock Nippon steel is the way to go. Also honorable mention to Ping G10 and Rescue Mid (they never made the TP in left hand). The Mids I have the NV Hybrid shafts and are pretty stable.
