An Eight Club Golf Bag

Recommended Posts

I learned to play with 3w, 6i, SW, putter.

I think I'm a better player for it. I figured out I could get my 6i to fly 120ish with a 3/4 cut (back then in the 90s) or 180 with a loopy running draw. I hit a lot of 3 woods off the deck. I delofted the SW to reach out to 120 or so when I had to.

If I were playing a short deck today, I would play:

TM Aeroburner Minidriver

Mizuno JPX 850 4h

Srixon z565 7i

Srixon z 565 PW

Cleveland RTX 2.0 58

Putter

Every year, my club has an end-of-season charity tournament with three clubs. I usually play 3h, 7i, 54.

I wish our facility would do this.

About to play my first 6 club walking round. Going with Cobra King Utility 2-3, 5/7/9/GW, putter. 6300 yds. No bag (Silo club carrier), so hopefully 4 balls is enough today. Wish me luck!

6/8/pw/52 would probably be a better setup, so I'll have to throw an 52 degree wedge in the trunk for next time.

Finished in around 3 hrs... 16000+ steps today. Shot an 85, 2 strokes better than the same course when I played it with a full set Saturday. Granted, Saturday I played different tees (+300 yds) but I also had a driver that day which I didn't have today.

I'd definitely say that I need a different wedge loft if I'm going to use it for everything inside of 100. I lost a couple strokes using my gap wedge on shots where it would not have normally been my wedge of choice.

All in all, can't complain. The course I played is in pretty good shape and is only $10 to walk after 3, so I'll definitely get some more 6 club rounds in while the Texas weather is still nice enough to walk.

Walk 90% of my rds went to a 10 club bag years ago. Tried alternating irons ( 4-6-8-PW-SW ) then ( 5-7-9-Gap-LW ) plus driver, 3wd, 2 hybrids and putter every other rd. Settled on driver 5-sw and putter. Thought about going to graphite irons to lighten the load but i'm to old school i guess. Bag is a Ping Hoofer 2.

My setup today... I think next time I'll go 3/6/8/pw/54/putter.

This guy wins.. even got rid of the bag

I got a few weird looks. Probably didn't help that I was wearing hiking sandals, lol. Even had a twosome stop and watch me tee off on a par 5 after asking me if I lost my cart. I heard them chuckling to each other "he's teeing off with an iron". I busted one down the middle, picked up my little bundle of sticks, and walked straight down the fairway like a hobo walking down a set of train tracks.

After going with an 8 club setup at the end of last season in an effort to get some feel back, I realized I actually score better and enjoy the game more. Getting caught up in mechanics or every club having a perfect # is no fun at all. Thinking I was cured, I went back to 14 clubs on a buddies trip, ditched the setup after the first day, not looking back.

Starting off the season with 7 but might slot a FW/Hybrid/53* in there. Going with Driver, 21*, 30*, 39*, 48*, 57*, Putter

MyStealth 9* Diamana GT 60TX
Paradym TD 15* GD ADCQ 80x
Apex Black 21* MRC MMT 105TX

Geom Moe CB 5-9 DG X100

TM MG Raw 46/50 TW 56/60 DG X100

Love it!!

I was at a local shop hitting my failed frankendriver in front of some folks. The clubs swing weight is jacked up (42 inch shaft), it feels bad but still performs at an acceptable level.

I was hitting it off the deck, and talking about us amateurs carrying too many sticks.

It was like I was Tony Robbins. The guys were nodding and asking how long I have been doing the small bag thing.

I’m not saying it’s the best way to play, but it is another way to play and enjoy the game. 9 times out of 10, amateurs are trying to hit shots that they shouldn’t. With limited options, the course chooses the shot for you.

It was interesting to have a couple of guys that wanted no part of it... then had interesting things to say when I brought up the single wedge and the driver and one other tee club perspectives.

I showed my standard driver (anser 8.5) and my next club down is a 16* UDI. They were under the assumption that this is a slow swing speed players method. I’m not a monster, but elevating the UDI and hitting it both ways made them open their eyes.

Food for thought.

Now that's a setup I could haul on bike or motorcycle! Very tempting.

Last weekend got in nine with D, 5h, 6,8,9,53*,64*, putter. A 38 with only 12 putts is a pretty awesome start to a season! May not carry a full bag all year.

You mentioned a bike and coincidentally I did see this setup in the local classifieds

I can't remember the last time I played 12 clubs let alone 14. I try to walk as much as I can, carrying my own bag or using a caddie. I have no need for that many clubs, but I haven't be able to get it down below nine. The long par 3's on my club's course make it hard to lose clubs at the long end. Maybe some new irons with strong lofts could get me there. My regular set up:

Driver (G400)

Cobra baffler F6 4 wood

Titleist 25 degree hybrid

Cally Diablo Forged 7 through P.

Scor 54

Yes Callie

Maybe one of those will be nervous thinking Eight is Enough and I'm number 9.

Down to 9 clubs in a ping moonlight for walking. D, 7W, 5/7/9,50,58,64, P.

Clubs left out from the Riding bag: 4W,6,8,P,55. Irons down to the 55 SW are Wishon Single Length. Don't miss the 4W at all, hit the 7W better and maybe 10 yards shorter.

I miss the 6/P some as I am not good at taking off some for those gaps. 55 isn't really missed much either.

It's weird having a 64 in a minimalist bag, but I really like the 64 sure out.

Question for you guys regarding weight.

How much does your bag weigh with this setup?

Probably 7 pounds or so.

What bag do you use?

Mine weighs about 12 with 9 clubs and about 16 with a full set. Switched from a Swift X to a Front Nine bag this year.

I have the Sun Mountain 2.5+. It's light, and has full-length dividers.

Loving my 6 club setup (3di/6i/8i/pw/54/putter). Played it well again today. I was playing with one of my normal playing buddies and I think I surprised him a little. I'm really starting to question why I normally use driver as much as I do. I really love hitting my King Utility off the tee and the results are great. I even had an eagle putt on a par 5 after using it twice.

Just weighed my setup: 11.5 lbs.

TaylorMade RBZ driver 9.5

Callaway Steelhead 4+

Wilson Staff Pi5 5,7,9,PW

Cleveland CG14 56

TaylorMade TPA V

Jones Players Bag

Towel, several balls, tees, and misc.

It is amazing how cutting 5 lbs adds up over the course of a round...

Yes it is. It doesn't sound like much, but it actually is. :-)

Just had eight clubs in my bag (D, 4h, 8-sw, putter), and then, I wondered how exacting am I really? Not very. So now, I have six (D, 4h, 8, pw, sw, putter). (Probably still too many.)

I hit a 4h about 200 and an 8i about 140. A yard gap of 60 yards doesn't bother you?

To add to my post, I wanted to pass along the other part of my 6 club setup... I didn't like filling my pockets with balls, tees, car key, divot tool, etc. I initially thought about a fanny pack, but I couldn't pull the trigger on that idea. So I went to a thrift store and found a camera pouch with a belt loop. It holds up to 8 balls in the camera pocket (even though I hopefully only need 2-3), and money, car key, divot tool, and tees in the small front pocket. I wish it had a belt clip instead of a loop, but it only cost me $1 and will be a great addition to my no-bag (well, kinda) walking setup.

Not if your normal drive gets you within 8i distance on the par 4s. If the driver and 4h gets you inside 8i distance on the par 5s, there is no gap.
