An Eight Club Golf Bag

For me it's more about having a lightweight bag to carry than any true desire to play minimalist golf. 8-10 clubs works really well for me but I sometimes think 7 is a good number too i.e. exactly half a full set.

For me this would be:

Driver,

20° hybrid (or fairway wood),

5 iron 27°

7 iron 35°

9 iron 43°

Sand Wedge 54°

Putter

I reckon I would still score normally with this setup but any fewer clubs I might start to struggle. If I added an 8th club I'd throw in a 50° gap wedge and swap the 54° for a 56° or 58° wedge.

Same with me...reducing the weight of the bag.

These two posts have me wondering whether I'm similarly carrying so few clubs just to save weight. And if so, should I simply use a push cart and bring a full complement of clubs.

I use a push cart when I take all of my clubs. When I want to carry my bag, I take eight.

Me too!

I take a push cart for medal rounds. I carry during casual rounds.

I absolutely carry less clubs to save weight. If using 14 clubs I use a push cart or a power cart. But there is something great about carrying your clubs in a small bag, it brings joy to the game for me, so it is truly worth carrying less clubs IMO...

Hello.

I was thinking about this setup for 2018:

- Driver 12* Callaway Big Bertha w 3w shaft, Stiff. 240yd.

- Hybrid 27* Callaway Razr X, Reg. 185yd.

- 6 Iron 33* Mizuno TP-9 Tour, True Temper Dynamic Gold R400. 160yd.

- 8 Iron 41* Mizuno TP-9 Tour, True Temper Dynamic Gold R400. 140yd

- PW 50* Mizuno TP-9 Tour, True Temper Dynamic Gold R400. 110yd

- 60* Cleveland Tour Action, True Temper Wedge Flex. 60yd.

- Putter Wilson Staff 8882.

- Bridgestone B330 RXS.

- Ping Moonlite Pencil Bag.

I like this bag a lot, would game it with pride. Except I would go a 7 wood instead of the hybrid and a 58* instead of a 60* . The 7 wood and 58* are my go-to clubs.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.
Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal. 5-G
Vokey 54.10, 2009 58.12 M, Testing TM MG2 60* TW grind and MG3 56* TW grind.  Or Ping Glide Stealth, 54,58 SS.
Odyssey Pro #1 black

A fun test for sure, but man did I miss having a 7 iron!

I've tried odds (5,7,9) and evens (4,6,8,PW) when it comes to irons but like you really miss the 7 iron which I use a lot. In fact 7 & 9 are two of my favorites that I miss a lot if I play evens.

Every time I go back to the minimalist setup, I start scoring better. Been in a slump lately and decided to thin the bag out again and focus on just basic shot making. Went out today in our 9 hole couples league and shot a 37 with my Driver, 5w, 5h, 7i, 9i, SW & putter. 7 clubs and I never was wishing I had any of the others.

I often wonder what would happen if I stuck with this for a season.....might have to leave the bag like this for a while. It also makes me realize that the cost of new irons could be WAY down. I'm thinking of ordering a G400 7i, 9i, UW.......$300 for new irons!

I usually walk but took about 3 months off. The first round out all I could think about was why am I carrying this heavy bag. My goal is to make the walk more enjoyable. Going all in on a half bag this year to make that happen.

Think you're going to enjoy the game more ... and score just as well. Let us know how it goes.

Half the clubs, twice the fun!

This idea really fascinates me and gives me a good reason to get a Sunday bag. Will definitely spend more than a few afternoons walking around with my abbreviated setup. My 8 club set up using the clubs I have would be Driver, 5 wood, 4, 6, 8, PW, SW and putter.

Hypothetical setup with the least amount of clubs possible and still score well would be something like a strong 13* wood (tee shot/ long fairway approach), 25* hybrid (long par 3/ mid-long fairway/ utility), ~37* iron (mid iron/ mid par 3/ greenside chipping), 50* wedge (short approach/greenside/ bunkers) and a putter. I think these 5 clubs still give you a lot of options without forcing you to play fundamentally different. Obviously you would need to tailor these to the course you play (par 3 lengths, loft needed for bunkers, tee shot distance required, etc), but this is a good starting place.

Went out for my first proper round in ages on sun. I had 12 clubs in the bag which were D,4 wood,4 hyb,5-pw,52,56 and putter. I was out late afternoon so course was still busy ahead of me but quiet behind me so I used it as a experiment. From my tee ball I put down a second ball, I played the first ball allowing myself to use all clubs. I then played the second ball only allowing myself to use what I would have in a 8 club bag (D,4w,4h,6,8 irons,PW,SW,P). Saw no difference in scores. Had a couple of holes were I dropped a shot and a couple were I gained a shot. All were down to missed or holes putts from similar distances. One thing I will say is after carrying my clubs around really quite a hilly course my back was wrecked by the time I had finished. I will definitely only have 8 clubs in the bag when I get out on the course next.

Thinking of going to 8 clubs for all of 2018. Single length irons would seem to make this setup even simpler. Here is what I am contemplating.

Driver Epic 44in 9*

TM P790 UDI 2 iron 17* (or a rogue subzero 5 wood 18*)

Cobra One length Black Utility 3-4 set at 22.5*

Cobra King Forged Black One length 7iron 30*

Cobra King Forged Black One length 9iron 40*

Ping Eye 2 Wedge 50.5*

Ping Eye 2 Sand Wedge 57.5*

Odyssey Rossie 2

with the single length clubs I think I could play around with choking down, and ball placement to get multiple distances easily out of each iron.

This looks great! If it were me I'd go with the 5-wood over the 2-iron just to have two woods in the bag if for no other reason...
