Colorado WRX 2018

What options are there in the area for non-stroke play, competitive golf?

I'd love to play in some match play events. Or odd things like playing with a limited bag tournament, events where they convert the course to play as 9/18 par 3's, etc etc. I know the CGA does match play events, but for some reason I don't really like the thought of the CGA. Their website doesn't really answer the questions I have about the organization.

Do I just have to go around and check out each golf course individually for events they might be holding?

If you get your handicap at Walnut Creek or Legacy Ridge in Westminster you get to play in a season long single elimination match play (assuming you qualify in the handicapped stroke play qualifier held in the spring). I won it when it was double elimination years ago. It's a lot tougher now as single elimination as they have a lot of low/plus handicaps that play in it and are very consistent.

For you guys hoping to play this weekend, I drove by several courses yesterday (on the south end of town) and I don’t think it's going to happen. There was more snow cover than not. Probably 80-90% covered.

Yeah, I think you're right. I've been doing the "sunshine come out" dance all week, but it just never warmed up enough to get rid of the snow. Oh well... just have to hit up the Family Fun Center driving range and get some practice in.

Out of all the Denver muni courses, which has the best driving range? Kennedy?

You're basically asking where on your face is it best to get hit by a baseball bat.

Overland is the only that you can hit off grass but that may have changed as it has been at least 10 years since I've been there. Willis doesn't have one and Welshire, Kennedy, and City Park are all off mats all year long.

I'd say family sports center. Huge short game area and heated bays during the winter.

Oh I agree, I like going to that place. But it's not part of the Denver Park District's golf course is it? I got a coupon/card for a free bucket of range balls for playing Fitzsimmons on it's final week being opened, as a "thank you" I guess. So it has to be used at Denver city course.

But wasn't Fitzsimmons an Aurora course? So you'd have to choose between Aurora Hills, Murphy, Saddle Rock, etc.

Yes, part of the Aurora golf courses.

Oh wow. Great catch. I would have made a fool of myself going to a Denver course and handing them that card.

Makes things easier though, I love Murphy's range/short game area. Is it open when the course is closed for the winter?

Sorry fellas, my wife’s regulars swooped-up all her Hamilton tickets. I have a few clients that are also members of the DCPA, so I’ll keep my ears open for any availability.

Looks like Monday and Tuesday will be nice golfing days. Shame I have to work.

Anyone live near a course that doesn't have a ton of snow and might be open tomorrow? I am taking the day off, but it doesn't appear that any courses are even close to playable. Talked to a buddy of mine today and he said Todd Creek and Riverdale still had a bunch of snow. Usually the north courses are playable before they are down here where I live. Buffalo Run, GVR maybe? Probably just wishful thinking.

I'll second this. Walnut Creek and Legacy Ridge are still about 50% covered. Walnut is usually the first course that is open in the metro area since it has a ton of southern exposure with no shaded areas. Even then I'm not holding my breath they'll open tomorrow. This snow will just not melt lol.

I was up at a party, at a house that backed-up to the Ranch on Sunday (Westminster). Got a little bored and walked a hole. Better than 50% covered.

Drove by South Suburban, Loan Tree and Plum Creek today (down on the south end of town)… They’re easily 50% covered as well.

I was hoping to get out also, we’re between projects. Not going to happen from what I saw.

You could always take the short drive to Colo Springs. I played Patty Jewett over the weekend (first time) and it wasn't in terrible shape.

Actually I think I’ll just feed my other addiction and head up to Ameristar and play some poker. Hopefully this next round of snow is light enough that we don’t start this process all over again. But if I had to choose I’ll take no golf now over missing league events in April as we usually do.

Hell, my league has two tournaments in March. One of them being before the season officially starts, so we can't even post that score to our GHIN.
