Played south suburban today, and somehow broke 80 for the first time ever with a 79. I have only played a handful times since labor day and my last two rounds have been my best at an 81 and 79. Really hoping it can carry over to next season. I wasn't really keeping score, which I think really helped. I knew I played decent, but had no idea I had enough to break 80. I tend to get in my head too often which can ruin a round. The hard ground certainly helped on a few drives - had a 350+ yard drive on 9 that was awesome. I know I got an advantage by it, but the ground would have also hurt more on some bad shots, so good swings were just as important and I try not to let it take away from my score. Thought I'd share....

Cheers!

What happened to the King OS hybrid? Looks like it was ditched in favor of the Utility? Also, what do you think of the F9? It'll be the first head in a while that'll make me think about dumping my Fly-Z+.

King OS hybrid is still in the bag along with the utility. It's the 3/4h right below the utility in my sig. In fact, I use that club a lot and love it, whereas I don't use the utility very often because I don't get along with it very well. The idea behind me carrying the utility was solely for use off of the tee, particularly on windier days. Unfortunately, I only hit it well about half the time so I need to spend some more time swinging it. When I hit it well, it is awesome, but I simply don't have the confidence to use it regularly right now.

As for the F9, I haven't had the chance to really look at it yet since I've been so busy for the last couple months. I had some issues initially with my F8, but that had more to do with my swing than anything else. I really like the club now.

Awesome. Glad to hear you're still getting along with the setup. I found out the hard way in the U.K. that I need to learn how to hit my 4i pretty low in wind. Playing 45mph wasn't advisable, but did expose some really weak points in my game (managing shots into wind). I played downwind just fine, but I wonder if something friendly like the utility would have helped on the day. I just can't bag that club, even if I like it, because of how infrequently I'd use it. And I've gotten over my notions that I need MORE irons and less hybrids. That 4i is going to the basement and only getting brought out on windy days if I can get a good replacement hybrid for cheap.

What's your winter golf prognosis? Going to be able to get out more than it seems like you have lately, or are the clubs up for a while?

The photos don't do these places justice, and I was a good boy and adhered to the no phones rule at North Berwick, so I don't have anything to show for myself there. Sorry! It was blue skies and stunning there as well, and it doesn't hurt when you fire a 77 while hitting about 25% of the fairways. Went -2 on the back after putting my driver in time out. My thoughts on the courses:

Prince's was a delight. With three nines to play, you can get a classic links experience doing the Shore/Dunes routing, or you can play their newly redesigned Himalayas nine that was honestly probably the best of the three, but doesn't get as much love because it was, until last year, pretty uninspiring. Holy smokes, the redesign made it so, so good. I was able to squeeze in 36 that day thanks to the good routing and me playing fairly quickly. I called my wife from the course to show her what I was seeing and she said she's not sure she's ever seen me as happy, outside of when we found out we were having Louise. If you wanted to do a vacation to the Kent area, you've got the three nines at Prince's, Royal St. George's, and Royal Cinque Ports. I wish I'd been able to play the other two, but I was quite content at Prince's and would easily do a three day stay there to just loop those 27 holes over and over. At $62 per 18, it's hard to find much better deals, and mine included dinner, a night at the lodge, and breakfast the morning of my round. Not too shabby!

Silloth on Solway will probably be on my list of best golf courses I'll ever play in my life (it's at the top right now, and I'm not sure if that's from pure shock at never playing anything like it before, or what), and probably a sleeper pick for a top ten course in the U.K. I paid about $45 to play, and the conditioning of the course was so good. The mounding at this place is NUTS. The design has a few blind shots, which can be a little funny to navigate, but I'd wager it was probably only difficult due to the fact that I decided to still play when the winds were blowing at 45+mph. It's probably going to remain a sleeper course just because there's NOTHING around it. The town is small, it's on the northwest border with Scotland, but access is pretty limited because it's basically in the middle of nowhere. I will be back to play this place again, as it was some of the most stunning holes I've ever seen. Shame about the weather, but I was pleased with an 84 in that wind. I want another shot at it though.

North Berwick was as pure a links experience as I think I could have had. We'd had horrible weather for most of our stay, but the golf gods smiled upon me and opened up blue skies, no wind, and 40 degree temps for my round. Like I said before, I rattled off a 77 while barely hitting a fairway all day. I don't really know what to say about this place other than it was exactly what you think you'll get out of links golf in Scotland. The course recovered really well from a brutally dry summer and was in top condition. The outward and inward nines did a great job of playing along the cost and then moving away from it. The greens were complex, but if you hit it in the right spot, birdies were easily available. If I'd been hitting fairways, I probably would be talking about a lifetime best day, but a sloppy 77 will suffice. Look up photos of the 16th green. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. The club was incredibly inviting and friendly, and not at all stuffy like I expected. I'll be back here if only to try to relive a good round. I think I paid about $100 for my round here and it was worth every penny.

Love your statement on not needing more irons and less hybrids. It's so true. Our egos are fragile lol. I still have a set of Mizzy blades that I can't part with for that very reason!

Fortunately for me, I had room in the bag for the utility, so now I just need to learn to hit it lol. The hybrid is awesome, though not a great solution for windy days due to its higher ball flight. My old hybrid is awesome too (Callaway Steelhead XR). I want to put them side by side on a launch monitor out of curiosity. I certainly would have no issue putting either in play.

Unsure on winter golf yet. I try to take the family skiing on Saturdays, which typically means typical chores and getting ready for the week on Sundays. If it's going to be 50*F+, I will certainly try to get out. Right now, my goal is to get my setup finished (I should probably start first lol) in my garage so I can hit every now and then. I've only been talking about it for a year now and have most of what I need...

I may also join D'Lance's winter league and/or Top Golf just to keep me swinging at some capacity in the off-season.

This weather has been phenomenal. Got out and played Commonground this afternoon. Love December golf... tee times are plentiful, and pace of play is great. Finished 18 today in 3:30

My wife’s got plans with a friend to go hiking tomorrow, so I’m gonna go play GVR late morning. That’ll be it for 2018 before having to hang it up. We head out of town for holidays next Saturday.

Hope you guys get to enjoy the warm temps this weekend!

I alllllmost went to CG today but opted for Murphy Creek instead. Missed a birdie putt on 18 for 35, which would have made two consecutive bones under par (never done that). Still happy with a 36 when the driver was fairly suspect. My second shots were really good all day, and if it were summer, I’m probably shooting 33 because I was flagging stuff all afternoon. One day I’ll be able to put this action together for 18...

And I’m with you. December golf is my favorite. Firm conditions, easy tee times, and pace is good. Except a foursome teed off WHILE I WAS STANDING NEXT TO THE TEE BOX on number one and never offered to let me go out before them. “You won’t be waiting on us.”

...

I played four balls on every hole because I was waiting.

Got to play Boulder County Club today. Weather was too nice not to get out and play this weekend. Other than the 5some of members slowing us down the last few holes it was great.

Quick invite to anyone available the Friday or Saturday of the 28th/29th:

My birthday is the 26th and I traditionally play a round on that day, but since that falls on a Wednesday and my wife is working, I'll probably play either Friday or Saturday when she's off. If anyone wants to join, it's an open invite! I'm crossing my fingers on the weather, so I obviously won't know more until a week or so out, but I'm sure I'll book a round somewhere and hope for the best.

Anyone playing Monday? What's the best track to get in 9 or maybe 18 near Cherry Creek mall...never played this late in the year in CO

Cherry Creek's kind of splitting the difference between Overland and CommonGround. CommonGround is going to be much more interesting than Overland, that's for sure.

Played 27 at the Links yesterday. Like everyone else has said, the pace is fantastic this time of year. It seems to be that there are very few groups of four on the course. Since we can’t post scores right now I have been putting with the flagstick in. It really is a timesaver but it’s something I’d probably only do in casual rounds cause I don’t want it to cost me any strokes in league play. I’d be shocked if any pros putt with it in next month. I know Bryson has said he would but once he clanks one that would have gone in I bet that ends the experiment

Got out today for a round at GVR. Shot my best round out there with a 39/43 with going +5 on the final 3 holes. Wish I could have closed out better but I found the greenside bunker two times in the final 2 holes and didn't hit well out of them at all. Highlight of the day/year was holing out from 154yds on 15 for a 2. Hope I didn't jinx my chances for a hole in one now lol.

Kind of disappointed the season is pretty much done since I'm playing the best golf right now. My last 3 rounds have been the lowest of the year (79,81, and 82), 2 of which were personal bests. Hoping this carries over into next season!

I've almost exclusively putted with it in for a while. I don't mind it, and haven't hit one so hard that it doesn't fall yet. But I still love the sound of the ball hitting an empty cup, so on putts that feel like they matter more, I pull it. But I'm with you. It's amazing how much faster it seems to go when you're not pulling it and replacing it 18 times a round.

You don't have to be done. Play in two weeks with me (weather permitting). I'd actually love to get a little four ball going or something if the numbers work out.

There’s a good possibility I’ll be in the area at that time. Still trying to meet up and play with some people since our November scramble hit canceled. I’ll update as the date gets a little closer.

That's perfect. I'll debate locations, but I'm always partial to Murphy Creek since it's easy and I just really enjoy the course. But I'm open to Riverdale or anywhere else, honestly. Just like to keep the price reasonable when possible.
