Photos on IG look great, but I kind of cringed at a few due to their "inspiration" from the Lamb putters (drafted sole, unmilled heel section on face, etc...)

Haha i hear ya, looks like hes just starting off and looking to form his own way. His work does look pretty clean tho.

Heres a pic of the proto he did with aluminum for those on on ig,

It seems like there are more and more putter makers that keep popping up on IG every other month! lol... I am guessing there are about 30-40 different makers. It's amazing really...

The "Lamb effect"............. ;)

Competition is good for the consumer. Makes the putter makers better at what they do and could also help with pricing.

Are they Lambish ... yeah absolutely, but I’m also not cringing. Just puts into perspective others have the ability to do similar work as Tyson. As he grows I’m sure he won’t copy everyone but at the same time it’s great practice to copy great putter makers. I’d be in for more competition. Puts product, service, and price in perspective.

The same thing is happening in the boutique bag and headcover market. I too love competition in any marketplace, it breeds higher quality goods and lower price points. However the small, niche market they have entered into is hardly recession-proof and I would venture to guess that most of them fail within eight years.

I'd like to see people start out with something besides an Anser style. It's so played and done.

Original designs are much more interesting to see.

This comment comes up a lot in the artisan threads. I wonder how big the market is for people who share your view.

It's pretty risky for a guy to churn out unique designs when there's a big market who are"traditionalists" and want their milled XYZ putter to look "classic."

I agree with you, but I'm not sure the market is there.

The way it appears CJ is doing it is more individual customs. So, having unique designs is more feasible.

His putters are outstanding!

What is the price point if you don't mind me asking

About $750 which is where most putter artisans are at. $550 - $850 is the norm and can include stamping, loft/lie adjustment, etc. When you ask for custom finishes, necks, etc. the price will climb.

You can get custom putters for much less. Anything at 750$ is starting to be out of hand for me lol. If you drop $750 On a putter from a lesser named maker..you can kiss resale value goodbye. If it's your forever...knock yourself out.

Share with me a custom for much less.. OTR Betti is 300 ish which is what I think when I hear "You can get custom putters for much less".. Not being argumentative as I am a dude who needs to live in that much less space...

Less? Black lab. Kingston. Carbon. Lajosi. Xenon. Mannkrafted, SGC...I may even be missing a few.

All will have models starting under $500...now if you want to go completely custom...start from scratch and make something truly unique...it can get expensive. I have had 3 customs made. 2 completely handmade, multi metal, Flowneck, none were more than $500.

Cody James' putters looks great. All im saying is you can get a custom putter for a fairly good price. Imo...starting at 550 for a regular Anser style...by a guy who is relatively unknown is a lot of $$$ to dish put. Imo.

Been working with Cody on a putter for a little while now and the milling just finished up. I've got to say the process has been awesome. Cody was wide open to any and all ideas I threw his way. He offered his thoughts where I wanted his input and aesthetic views, but he was willing to incorporate my ideas extremely well. I'm sure it was a bit of a pain dealing with me, but I actually sent him multiple CAD drawings that I was hoping to get onto the putter and he was open to it all. I actually drafted up a face milling pattern that I haven't seen before, and he was able to redraw it to make it usable for his setup. I was able to choose the depth of the face milling when the time came. I have only done one other custom putter before, and while I did think that was a great process at the time, Cody's process took it to a whole new level.

I think it's worth mentioning that I asked for something that I've seen Lamb (and some other makers) do, and Cody said he would prefer not to do that out of respect for his competitor. I really respect that. He is definitely set on creating his own brand and I think it's going to work for him.

After getting my Cody James Putter in hand, I can confidently say he is the real deal. The craftsmanship is completely dialed in. The milling is exactly how we discussed, the toe hang is perfect, and the finish is incredibly well-done. A good friend in town has a beautiful Tyson Lamb putter, and he’s the one that suggested I check out Cody. He is having one made currently, and he’s all about the hand-work. His CJ putter reflects that, while I was looking for super clean cnc work with a simple but personal appeal. I’d absolutely recommend getting a Cody James putter.

I remember seeing that face milling and loving the unique look. I've been a big fan of of his torched damasus "c" inlay too.

So you the got the last putter of 2018 huh? ?
