Streamsong Caddie fee

Recommended Posts

I am sure I can find this elsewhere, so my apologies for a potentially redundant question. Streamsong list their caddie fee as $100 + Gratuity.. I hate when courses do this. Kiawah does it right, just tip the caddie 100+ and be on your way.

That being said, what is the caddie getting out of that 100 and what should the gratuity be base on quality service?

Thanks!!

I don't remember what I tipped when I was there but I always assuming that an acceptable job gets a 50% tip and an over the top job gets 100%. My caddie there was pretty good but nothing out of this world so he probably got $160.

So you are saying fee plus $60? I just never want to be the guy that shorts a caddie. But with different systems everywhere you never know.

Yep, I always assume fee + 50%.

From my previous experience caddying at a club that lists the caddie fees like this, I'd guess they are getting 60% to 80% of that $100. However, it wouldn't hurt to ask the caddy what his take is off the rate. If I were to play Streamsong and had a single bag caddy, I'd want him/her to at least NET $125+.. Given they do a good job.

When I was there last year, it was straight cash to the caddy, $100+tip, caddy kept 100%.

That's good to know they don't take a hit off of the posted "rate".

From what I am reading it is a suggested 100 minimum plus gratuity. If they are getting the full hundred it seems like an awful lot to give them more than an additional 50 (150 total/bag). I am assuming most caddies at premier public courses are making around 100 bag.

Have not played SS, but at Bandon, feel like we paid $125-150 per bag (all cash going to caddy - but I remember a lower suggested minimum).

At high end private clubs I have played recently with good caddy programs, feels like I paid much less than that (maybe $150-200 for two bags).

Yes, if the full fee went to them it is a bit different. I wish I could recall what I gave there but if the "fee" is $100 then I'm sure it was like $150-$160. If there was no fee then I would consider $100 the recommended amount and I likely give the guy $110-$120 because he was good and did more than just the basics.

I admit that I have a hard time paying resort caddies $125+ a bag when the top guys at my home club don’t get that, and they’re every bit as good (better, really).

But I generally feel like $100/bag is a reasonable benchmark. I tip more for a solo loop, both because the service is inherently better and because the caddy is going to make less on one bag than two.

The resorts have to use this “standard fee plus gratuity” model so that heir caddies don’t get screwed by well-intentioned people who just don’t understand the independent contractor model.

Don't like caddies and will never pay one, so if caddies are mandatory, I'll play somewhere else.

In fairness, I don't like carts, and if they're mandatory, I'll (likely) play somewhere else...

Yes so agree, I hate carts, love to walk and love the game. But I like caddies even less than carts, sorry but never had a good experience, especially those who double bag.

I get it. I’d estimate that 25% of caddies are just plain bad, a good number are sort of indifferent, and about 25% are very good. My caddies at SS have all been very good.

But it’s annoying to be lumping around with somebody for four hours who’s not good, knowing that you’re going to fork over $100 at the end of the round for the privilege.

I typically give $100 a bag at resorts. When at Streamsong a couple years ago I gave $100 a bag and they gave us cards for when we come back to ask for them. I try to make sure the caddie nets $100, just ask them if they give any to the house, they are normally honest. At Sea Island they only get 50% of the fee charged in the pro shop.

Everyone makes a big deal out of taking a caddy, pay them what you would want to be paid to do their job and if the caddy has a problem with it, that is on them. I go to Kiawah two or three times a year, every time I have one of the same three caddies, I asked point blank is $100 the right number they all said yes.

Finally ask the caddy master. Whenever I am at a someone else's club I ask what do the caddies get. He will tell you what the guy should get.

Kiawah is great about it. My guy there was upfront, no more/no less, 100 bucks and we are good. Also you aren't dealing with "fees" just works out very well.

Regardless of fee at pro shop I usually give $100 for a single bag, a little more if service is over and beyond. Almost always the caddie will ask when I'm playing again and if I would mind them on the bag again. I have taken this to mean that they are satisfied with the tip.

At Streamsong I had one of the poorer caddie experinces, guy was good enough caddie, but had just arrived from his usual gig at Pine Valley and had no real course knowledge. The greens ate him up, and he finally stopped reading putts as my lines were typically better. Im sure he figured it out, but I still gave him the $100. Not sure what the pro shop caddie fee was.

$100 plus tip in my mind is $100 plus $20.... I don’t really care what the caddy’s cut or the resorts cut is—- that is between them. At $120 I’ve done my part

Standard caddie tip is 50% everywhere I’ve been. I’ve probably played over 500 rounds with caddies over the years and never once heard of anyone giving a 20% tip for actual caddie work, i.e., not forecaddie work, until now. Agree on the other part though. Percentage of the fee going to the caddie isn’t ever a factor in my calculations.

First I've heard of a 50% "standard" - but caddy pay is complicated by the management structure and fees. As somebody noted above, I like to make sure their take-home is in the $80 - $120/bag range or $150 - $250/round.

The course-billed fees create some complexity. I've had caddies complain that they only get $75 of the $100 fee and the house "keeps" the rest...except I know that the $25 is actually FICA and income tax withholdings...just like the rest of the world has to deal with.

Simply put, I don't think we should be paying more than 100-150 to use a caddie service. That is my confusion. To me Fee= Resort, Tip = Caddie. Tip has always been 100-150, but obviously math says that is now $250 which would be unreal.

The key is to ask the caddie master how much of the fee is going to the caddie, so you can calculate back a reasonable tip (based on a ~$100/round benchmark).

The challenge is that there are so many different models in play - the one that bothers me most is when you play at a place where caddie fees are included in greens fees, and it's really hard to figure out what the guy's getting paid.

As a caddy, I never want my caddiemaster knowing what I make - and most likely they will tell you to give the caddy less anyways.. Ha.

Why would you care? If the caddie fees are included in the green fee, then what the caddie receives is between them and management.

Just played Streamsong last weekend... If you really dig into the website it states that the Fee is completely up to the player and caddy... At Streamsong the Caddies get 100% of what you pay them...

We had a couple of caddies that had previously worked at Pinehurst and they both stated that was part of the reason that they left and came down to Streamsong. Not having to share anything with the Club/Resort was huge for them.
