four Major winners standing around watching this quirky little man absolutely stripe practice balls....

A quirky little man with a baseball grip! He's always fascinated me.

One of my personal favorites is a picture I have with him. Watched him hit balls for an hour.

I'm sure it is. In the 90's I worked/played green grass out of club that had a Nautral Golf certified instructor. His winter visits to Florida to work with Todd Graves and be around Moe always yielded some very interesting insights. And his recollections of Moe's very impressive range sessions were always enjoyable to hear.

edit: I watched the Natural Golf era of instruction come and go, it was something I never participated in, but a chance to meet and see Moe was something I wish I had gotten a chance to do myself but never did.

Hi KL :) This is Richard’s momento from when Pete took him up to Canada to play with Moe. Though Richard and I did not know each other at this time, through Pete I too got to meet and play with Moe and he was a real sweetheart. He was shy and a little unsure of himself around groups of people except when he had a golf club in his hand, then he was in command and a magician with a club and ball. Sam and Pete were two of the few tour pros who took a liking to Moe and treated him with kindness and respect. Ben Hogan was not one of those few. Pete always referred to Richard as “RP,” and he told me that for whatever reason, Moe heard it as “DB,” and across the eight plus hours that they spent on the course across two rounds, this is what he called Richard, lololol. So when he would say Richard’s name, he would repeat “DB, you’re up, you’re up DB, ” hahaha. Richard has been called worse ? M

Just read this again because I felt like smiling.

I think this image has already been shared but when I was a little kid I vividly remember watching this tournament with my grandfather. He was in absolute disbelief ---

I believe it was painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in anticipation.

Edit: so I watched this and wow! Fun stuff. Clutch play by both, but forgot (probably because I was 10 years old when this was played - and didn't see this one because it wasn't on, or that much of Jack on TV) how hard he went at some shots - whew, Tiger very Jack like in that way.

The one Gent that Sam spoke the most highly of and he had some great stories and I covered a few in the thread that I did on this Gent.

I am speaking of Lloyd Mamgrum.

This Man was a legitimate Bad arse, letting it be known that if Hogan EVER gave him that lil “icy glare” of his, ole benny the batch better have something a hell of a lot nastier than that stupid stare to follow it up with. Lloyd was also slightly miffed when Hogan picked up the nickname, “the wee iceman,” from the Gents across the pond after his ‘53 Open Championship victory.

Ya see, Lloyd’s nickname was “Mr. Icecycle,” though Sam, Pete and those close to him called him “Ice” because of his cool calm detached demeanor under pressure, whether it before he smokes a 208yd 3i to 5’ in a driving rainstorm in winning his only Major, the 1946 US Open, or prior to walking back inside a biker bar in LA to plant that same 3i upside a biker’s head who with his bud had jumped Lloyd when he went to the bathroom, lol(I spoke to this story in my thread). He half jokingly pointed out the “wee” in Hogan’s nickname, lmao??

Lloyd also was miffed cuz Riveria was called “Hogan’s Alley” due to his 3 victories in the Los Angeles Open, as Lloyd had four LA Open Victories and though the 1950 event was not one of them, as Sam and Hogan were tied atop the leader board after 72 holes, however rain and inclement weather delayed the 18-Hole Play-Off for 10 days and Lloyd came back into town to pull for Sam, slightly irritating ole benny, though he was quiet as a mouse and as usual when they met head-up, Sam spanked Hogan,(Sam had a 3-1 record head-up in either play-offs or match-play, his only loss being 2&1 when he was called two days prior and filled in against Hogan in one of those “Shell World of Golf” matches).

Lloyd Mangrum had rock star looks, a HoF career(elected 1998) and was a true war hero.

Oh yea, that 1i that Hogan stroked at Merion?

Lloyd was on the receiving end that day as he lost that Play-Off.

Yep, he was the real deal and I really think the only Man that Sam looked up.

His eyes lit up when he spoke of Lloyd

God Bless em all and I know that they’re raisin hell somewhere(no pun intended, lmao) and ole Pete, being the older Bro, is still telling em both to grow the hell up, lmao.

Stay well Gals & Gents?

I'm disappointed there is no stand alone bio of Mangrum so

had to settle for a copy of an old instruction book of his - looking forward to it.

Yeah I was in the library not long ago and thought there may be a book about his life but found nothing (not exactly Library of Congress here). I hadn't looked any further into it but your post answers my question.
