Bobby Locke - The man the PGA Tour banned for simply being too good.

 

 

 

Was the PGA Tour in existence when this great golfer played? I'm not sure but don;t think so.

 

He came to the US in 1947 and won 11 of the 59 tournaments he played in the next couple of years. Half of his finishes were in the top 3. Officially he was banned for not showing up to some tournaments he had committed to, which was true. The quote about banning him for being too good is attributed to Claude Harmon. The ban was lifted in 1951, but he very rarely came back to the US To play.

 

If I remember correctly, the reason for not showing up was that he already committed to play a tournament in Europe where he was defending the title which he won the previous year. Apparently, he did ask for permission from the then “Tour” to play in the other event. He felt that it was the right thing to defend as he did commit the previous year to do so. I think he is right up there with the greats that played this game. But being a complexed person with perhaps not the persona of the others, never got the recognition that he deserved

Don't have a pic to prove it, but I sold Craig Stadler a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer/fax machine in November of 2002 at the OfficeMax in Denver, Colorado. Was pretty cool for a 20 year old golf fanatic to see a major winner without being anywhere near a golf course.
