SIDENOTE: jack was so revered and copied that Johnny Miller went so far as to ask Jack how he stretched for a round...

which he immediately copied lol

It was a jack grout routine where jack would stretch with a one iron between his arms, behind his back and twist around on the range before hitting a ball...then again on the first tee…

It’s so interesting to see Miller also using what he called “high hands” on the backswing which was actually a flying elbow by today’s standards…

Coupled with Johnny’s early hand set, it made for a really cool looking swing and the coolest reverse C to ever grace this planet…

There was so much Jack DNA in Miller’s game...

I loved it especially during the years when Miller copied Jacks putting style where he was bent over almost 90° with his eyes behind the ball…

Everybody tried to copy Jacks high hands/flying elbow but Miller was my favorite version...

nothing compares to miller’s violent reverse c...and I love it....millers move was a young, very flexible, explosive interpretation of Jack...the man who changed it all

Of note: Miller would always preach/teach the early hand set/take away and [jack-style] high hands...

Come for the awesome golf swings, stay for the pants!!!!!!

The "slacks" I wore back in 7th - 10th grade - yikes! 10th grade I was starting to shoot up at a rapid rate - those wide bottoms didn't look good when they were a couple inches above my stacked heel shoes, lol.

One of those kids rocking the jeans - off with his upper inseam!

Underrated player: Jeff Maggert.

  • 3 PGA Tour wins including 1 WGC
  • 1 European Tour win
  • 1 Australian PGA Tour win
  • 6 Champions Tour wins
  • 13 top 10 major finishes including 8 top 5 finish which itself includes 4 3rd place finishes
  • 7 top 10 finishes in the US Open out of 17 starts
  • 3 Ryder Cup teams
  • 1 Presidents Cup team
  • Highest world ranking of 14

I don't know if there is an American golfer who has played in at least 3 Ryder Cups with fewer PGA Tour wins especially during a decade of many great American golfers.

Maggert has the epitome of a US Open type game. Straight driver, good short game and solid putter. Grind it out.

Boy, was that a costly bunker shot.  From memory, he was leading the Masters at the time in the final round, and it hit the lip, hit him, and cost him a triple.

Though Sam absolutely hated this pic, it would become the eternal image of his not being able to overcome his kryptonite, the US Open. Taken shortly after he had put his drive on the 72nd hole in the 1939 Open(Philadelphia CC) into a bunker, he seemed to know what was to come(7 more friggin shots). While approaching the tee, he was told by someone in the gallery, as they didn't have on course running score boards back then, that he needed a birdie 4 to win, when in fact he needed a par 5 on a hole that he had birdied two of the previous three days, and a bogie 6 would've gotten him into a play-off.

His drive, which went into a fairway bunker, was actually one of his better shots on the hole as he would finish with a trip 8.

Believe it or not, peeps would actually send this pic to Sam to sign, and when he'd bring his mail to Pgh in a few bags in the trunk of his car for Pete(and I) to help him sort through, though I never came across this particular pic, Pete did a few times, and he just tossed it, along with the letter, into the garbage. And yea, Sam signed his own pics, if ya sent em to him at his VA address, however if they went to the published address that his mgt company provided, unless it was for a special auction or charity event, it was stamped.

Oh, and most of those "signed" Staff drivers that any of ya might be lookin at on the net, and I don't give a sh*t if it has a certificate of provenance with it, cuz it's still bullsh*t(actually IF it was genuinely "Sam signed," it would not have this as he would have signed it in front of the guy), well, one, while he Played Staff irons/wedges, Sam NEVER Played Staff Drivers and secondly, unless you stood there in front of him and watched him personally sign it, which is entirely possible as Sam always carried a bunch of Staff drivers in his trunk, which he'd open in club parking lots, Pete's and any driving range and restaurant parking lots or anywhere that fans might have been and for a Benjamin, he'd give ya a signed stick along with some bullsh*t story about some great drive that he had hit with that particular stick, it was not his signature, so save yourself money and NEVER buy one off of the net, lolol. You're welcome😉

Anyhoo, I too hated this pic cuz Sam was one of the most confident positive "let's go get some" Individuals that I'd EVER met, regardless of the sport or profession, and the man sitting on that bench in that pic was a badly beaten man, and the poor b*stard still had seven shots to go🥴

Though Eldrick Tont introduced "Tiger Proofing" into the modern golf lexicon, loooooong before Tiger was even born, the board members ran around Oakmont chirping about "Johnny Proofing" the track even for USGA Am events😂😂🤙

They considered/consider anything 65 and under an affront to their Club, their track and their masculinity and excluding doin something crazy like running out onto the course and rolling over the potential offending Player's ball with a cart at every opportunity, anything was fair game, even turning a deaf ear to the USGA Director's spoken orders Friday afternoon to cut the rough down and back on both Friday AND Saturday evening of a US Am after said Player had fired a 66(not to worry, he followed with up with a 73, lolol😂😂).

I'm guessing with the Texas connection that Bruce Crampton is in this thread and I've somehow missed him. So my apologies if this pic is here already, but for some reason I was just thinking about him.  Maybe it's because watching Nicklaus when I was in junior high, often meant Crampton was getting air time (four seconds to Jack in majors in that period), so he was a very familiar player, no idea, but I'm watching college golf and for no apparent reason his name just popped into my mind.  So I immediately go looking for some good images of him and to my dismay there really don't seem to be a lot of them, so I picked a "winning" pic and even if it's been up already, this thread should be bumped often. 😉

not a pga win but still awesome...tiger was going for a 3peat

this was tiger circa 05 at St Andrew’s and Hoylake the same year...

dunlop, especially in those days, attracted AWESOME fields...

ahhh at Valencia that Sunday. Left early cuz wanted to beat the crowd out. Stopped at the In N Out an exit down the freeway and who rolls in to have a look around - Freddie and Joey. Hilarious. About 10 touristy golf fans spot him and before they can run to tackle the pair, they bolt back out the door. Drive thru I’m sure.

Mayfair was known for what else? I’m curious now! Ha
