An argument can be made that no one has ever done more to popularize golf then Harry Vardon.  His tours of the US where he dominated the competition were very instrumental in popularizing the game.  He generated a tremendous amount of press coverage which resulted in many people taking up the game and many courses being built.

Thinking about it, I'd alternate it with a Manufacturers Hanover one.

That collar of Floyd's at the '76 Open was a remarkably bold move. One strong gust and he could have been lost.

 

How I miss the old Slazenger V neck. Effortless style. Whether you were Seve, shooting 65 in the Open, or 14 and shooting 80, they just worked.

Floyd had THE intimidating stare, but weiskopf had the better sansabelt look IMHO.

Then and now.

 

I remember watching highlights, narrated by the late Renton Laidlaw, of Mark James' win in the inaugural Dubai Desert Classic before going to school as a 14 year-old. I recall being struck at how much work must have gone into building that green square of land in the middle of the desert. The tournament was a pretty small one back then; a bit of a novelty in the then British and Spanish-centric European Tour which showcased a new part of the world where you never imagined golf could ever be a big thing.

 

 Fast forward thirty years and a lot's changed...

Weiskopf circa 1973…

Even Jack was in awe of his swing…

it was a move rarely equalled in golf history imho

 

plus he wore fully bespoke clothes like Jack, Johnny, Floyd and the other 70s icons..the long sleeve at The Open [he won] was friggin awesome
