We have Speed Sticks, but those seem to screw up his swing whenever we use them.  Don't know why, but he just gets all out of whack with them. In the meantime, we keep playing other sports (primarily baseball and tennis). He pitched a 5-inning, 1 run game the other day with 3 hits, 7 SO's and 1 walk.   Also doing "body weight" type exercises (push ups, leg lifts, etc...) and have 6lb medicine ball to do chest pass tosses, etc...

We had them for about a week two years ago.  wreck my son's swing for a month.

Haven't used Speed Sticks in years.  I do have a set.  Yes they wreck the swing and incredibly dangerous on the body.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Yeah, we still don't use them.  They just never worked for us and caused all sorts of havoc with his swing.  I need to put them up on eBay.

Currently, we are in a professionally led workout program/class that is helping immensely with distance.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

What makes them better? Wouldn’t they have the same effects on juniors that others are warning about?

The beauty of the stack system is the app. The app creates a program for you based on your performance on baselines tests. You get data back so there is tangible evidence to show whether you are making gains or not. With the speeds sticks you swing them but you never measure any speeds or track anything to know if you are making gains. The stack system requires you to get a device to measure swing speed and other than that, you get everything you need with the stack system.

Get the Stack System... they'll take your Speed Sticks and give you a $100 credit.

You know I have no interest in my kid doing a speed training protocol.  There are better ways to gain swing speed.

Speed Sticks and training are not going to work for a good majority of junior or female golfers.  A good majority of parents want to argue with me when I say this.  There is no credible study done that says the Swing Speed protocol works for juniors or females.  Getting in the gym and on a specific program for that individual is the best bet to increasing swing speed.

BTW...  working out wrecks growth plates is a fallacy.

Love it!!  Need that deadlift bar.

I check OfferUp and some other local boards for those almost weekly right now.

He's in week 2 of lifting... Went heavy on arms Saturday and on Monday he said he could move his triceps.  If I could blame his scores on that I would but his short game is in shambles right now to be honest.  Told him being sore is a privilege.

  • 3 weeks later...

My son is 12 and is bulky if not tall. He's played AAA hockey since he was 5 so some specific muscles may be overdeveloped. He's always hit the ball farther than anyone else his age, but now it's something different. He just got back from a 3 week overnite hockey camp where they introduced real weightlifting for the first time. He came home benching 180 and he's carrying it 260 off the tee with minimal effort. I need to get him on a trackman soon because I'm certain his senior flex shaft is all wrong for him now. It's crazy how fast it changes at this age.

Lifting > than any speed program.

I hear the consistent feedback that speed sticks for juniors is not worth it but has anyone got any feedback on the Stack System (the one with the changeable weights and the app) or Slingshot?

A buddy has the stack stystem and also said it ruined his son's swing for a bit.  I mean conceptually it is the same thing speedsticks right?

True, as I recall when my son was 10 he drove something like 150 total. As he grew, he drive a bit farther but not much. By high school he was driving about 200 and played varsity. It wasn’t until after Sophomore year that he really gained distance with specialized performance training. Even so, I don’t think he broke 250 too often, but by senior year his total distance was around 280 to 300 yards with a 110mph average swing. Now, he’s well over 120mph with all his boxing and MMA training.

So, even though he swings very fast now, as a kid he never got more than 150-200 yards or so?

Do you think boxing and MMA training helped a lot in his distance and speed gained? Would you have started him in those training in his younger years?

I'm not convinced any weight training does any good before puberty. What those sports do for the kid though is teach them discipline, honor and integrity.
