Remember the story of Ken Venturi winning the US Open despite having intense heatstroke and forgetting most of his round, and therefore relying on his partners to verify his scorecard at the end?

Same thing happened to me, except I had severe hypoglycemia (Type 1 diabetic), and I didn’t win/qualify. I’m impressed I posted 82 to be honest (72 qualified; tough course). After the round, and a little rest, I saw I drank the equivalent of 8 juice boxes and ate 4 protein bars. Apparently at one point, after a playing partner pumped two drives OB, and had to walk back to the tee after finding they were both gone, I asked him “are you sure you can’t play your ball off the middle of the highway?”

I was within a couple of strokes the other year I went, but it’s not nearly as fascinating a story as me zombieing my way around a golf course in a foreign country without travel insurance (I was young).

I've tried 4 times. Closest I came was shooting 73 and missed making it to sectionals by 1 shot. No big story because I played well. Oh! I did 'semi' top my opening tee shot. Other than that, played well. Played behind Jay Delsing all day.

Worst I've shot is an 83 on a day where temps reached about 101*.

I’m a long way from it now but I played with a guy named Emlyn Aubry several decades ago when he was medalist in a local and didn’t break a sweat. 2 years later I shot 40 on the front nine, free wheeled it on the back nine, 3 putted 18 for a par and missed a huge playoff by 1. Like 9 guys for 1 spot type of deal. That was my last attempt. I’d not break 90 now.

Played with Billy Mayfair last year at sectionals, guy still hits it good but man my grandmother putts better. He missed maybe 3 or 4 fairways in 36 holes, along with only missing 4 greens, missed by a couple shots. Still was embarrassing getting dusted by him though.

Also he smashed his putter into the green on the 9th hole of our first round and left a pretty big mark in the green. I looked over at my caddy and said “you think he’s gonna fix that?” No chance.

Interesting thread. I've had dreams of qualifying but that's as far as I've made it. Hopefully more will share their stories.

I’ll give it another go again. Missed sectionals by a shot last year and lost in a playoff (5 holes!) two years ago. Hopefully it’ll go better this time around

I'll be trying....usually caddie in the local qualifiers around me, but this year I want to play in it.

May 9th @ Blue Mash Golf Course in Maryland. I caddied the local here two years ago so I know the course and have the same pin sheet from the day (maybe that'll be my advantage! lol)

Low round 2 years ago was 66

Say you made it to the US open thru qualifying. How much cash have you spent? How much time has it taken you? Airfare? Car rental? Hotels? Food?

Depends on where you live. Most states have more than 1 local, it’s just 18 holes now so really no overnight travel required for most. Not sure what the entry is these days, $150 maybe? So the local you are out $250 max if you choose to stay nearby the night before. Sectionals are also abundant and don’t require air travel unless you have some odd circumstances or live in the sticks.

I never tried for the Open...just the PubLinx (back when it still existed) and the Mid-Am...now I'm just biding my time to turn 55 - to be eligible for the Sr Am events (2 more years).

And I'm focused mostly on local/state level. My grandfather qualified 2x for the Sr Am back in the 70s, but I know the competition is way higher now. Goal for this year is handicap down in the ~3-4 range...increase practice time & focus on fitness heading into 2019

I was even through 8 last year until I hit a tee ball in the parking lot on a 515 yard par 4 with a three tiered green. I’m not bitter or anything but it’s literally the worst hole in America.

I'll be giving it a go this year. Shinnecock Hills is one of my favorite courses. Never played it, but so badly want to. I have gotten my distance back, and that has given me a lot of confidence. Of course you get one thing, and you lose another. My chipping/pitching is absolutely horrible now, and I have lost all confidence. Courses in Houston are wet and soggy, and the grass is dormant. Imagine chipping for green where the grass length is as short as a green, but the surface is wet and muddy. Played in a tournament 2 weeks ago in Austin where I bombed a drive, and bombed a 3 wood. It was a 577 yard par 5 (48* temp wise). Left myself with a 20 yard pitch over a bunker, on a lie as just mentioned. Didn't want to hit it fat, so I hit it in the teeth.... into the hazard at he back of the green. Hacked it out onto the same lie, then chunked it. Ended up with a triple. Rattled me and made double, double the next 2 holes. Ended up shooting 37, 45. Rebounded the next day with a 72.

So yeah... I want to play and I want to qualify. I realize I have to catch lightning in a bottle for 3 rounds, but nothing is impossible. Only one problem. My current index is at 2.1. I have to get it down to 1.4 to enter. Difficult to do in the cold/crappy weather and course conditions in Houston. If I were in FL, I would be there already (at a 1.4)

I'm so jealous of your cold crappy weather in Houston. My buddy and I play all year in NYC. Of the last 6 rounds I played 4 were on greens that were rock solid. Love hitting wedges that hot the green and bounce off. : )

I'm planning on trying if they have my local at the course they have for the past few years. Does anyone know when they will post a "sneak peak" of the sites? I know they do that really early for amateur.

They post them soonish. In a week or so I believe. Applications open in March 5th. Check your state golf association, they may already have them up.

Thanks for the tip! State had them posted. The one I was wanting to play isn't happening but closest one is 7622 yards from the tips. Think I'm going to give it a go.
