Anyone else considering a Ping iBlade G700 combo set?

Recommended Posts

I've always liked the look of the iBlades but don't fancy my ability to play a full set.

And I love my Crossover 5 and 4 irons.

The new G700s look like swollen iBlades so I've been pondering a combo set.

IBlade (power spec) PW to 8 iron, and then G700 (regular spec) for 7 and 6, and then either g700 or Crossover for 5 and 4.

I'm assuming that the iBlades would be more accurate than the G700 in the scoring irons. But who knows?

Aesthetically it would work. Although I'd probably feel compelled to replace my RTX 3 wedges with Glides.

There would be a dramatic jump in offset, but even though I fight a hook with my irons I hit my hugely offset Crossovers straighter than my much less offset Steelhead Pros. So again who knows?

iBlades have been very playable up to a 6 for me. I haven't felt like I needed a more forgiving club on a miss hit to where it would've really mattered much. Maybe i200s would've saved me a little on a shot here or there. But still don't have to be perfect to get good results, and yet they let you know when you are a little off, which is nice.

I don't know about the G700s. They are just so massive. I'm sure they work great, but they just look so unwieldy to me. I think I'd rather use hybrids, if I needed extra help.

Not with iBlades, but after hitting the G700 a few days ago, I immediately thought about a G700 4 Iron and i200 5-PW Combo set.

I am thinking about a G700 4-iron in the power spec configuration at 18.5 degree then 4-P in i200. I'm not sure my OCD will let me carry two 4 irons though.

I'm currently playing G series after struggling with the ie1 irons (but it was more the lack of practice for me than the iron - indian, not the arrow). I too looked at the G700's and thought this would be a fantastic set to pair with the iBlades.

However, as other's have mentioned, even with power spec'ing the iBlades, it's going to be a struggle to get these to have have a huge gap between irons. I currently carry a G series 3 Crossover, and the gap between it and the 4 iron is large but manageable. And given the G700's are basically the crossover design, it may just be worth buying the G700's through 8 iron, and then playing iBlades / Wedges. Then again, my distances off turf on my G series irons are (carrys):

3 Crossover: Carry 225

4 iron: Carry 205

5 iron: Carry 195

6 iron: Carry 185

7 iron: Carry 175

8 iron: Carry 165

9 iron: Carry 155

PW: Carry 135-140

UW: Carry 120

SW: Carry 105

LW: Carry 90

I guess I have a larger gap from 9i up then down.

No. There's too much difference in characteristics of those two irons. Chances are you'd get some funky gapping issues. I own a set of s55 with an i25 4 and 5 iron and hate it. The 4 and 5 irons spin too much and fly too high often times making the distances unpredictable. I have at times carried my 6 iron as far as the 5 iron. I am currently looking to find a set of s55 heads to replace the i25. They are un-game-able as of now.

I think the issue is they went and made the GMax replacement look like the iBlade - which I think everyone can agree that that look is simply the best iron Ping is making. From the G700, to the iBlade to the Glide wedge, you get a consistent look. But to consider the idea of treating Pings like Titleist irons where you can mix those - you'd have to stick to the i200 and the iBlade like the CB and MB irons.

Just go watch the comparison of the iBlade, i200, G series and the Original Eye2 on YouTube. I think even with the power spec you are going to end up with massive gapping issues. Not to mention that the hollow-body iron is going to often be too hot and end up launching a shot 10-15 yards longer than you want.

While it would look great in the bag, it's performance is going to suffer. I went from G30 to ie1 and went back to G series. This is even with fitters / shops saying "The i200 is as forgiving as the G30". Didn't matter - confidence wasn't going to be there after I struggled on the ie1 irons.

Would I love to play iBlades? Absolutely? Could I hit them pure? Sometimes. But the fact is I'm not playing enough to warrant them in my bag.

I would go iBlade/i200 combo. Or just go try iBlades 6-PW with powerspec lofts and your crossovers.

I have played a combo set of pings for the longest time. It was always the iseries short irons, with g series long irons. It's been the best for me. I usually transitioned at the 7 iron or so, I always had a 7 in each set made. I used to go to Scottsdale a couple times a year to get things checked out and those guys do a terrific job, even for standard retail they'll handselect a head for the right loft and swingweight. Go to an authorized ping fitter m, one with their flight optimizer or whatever it's called. They'll hook you up

Best of luck. I struggle with offset massively. I could not go from low offset and then blend to shovels. My alignment gets messed up.

Funny, I carry the 7 iron iblade same distance as g400 7 iron despite the loft differences on trackman. But blade style irons are much more consistent in distance and direction. I also have no problem hitting long irons, so no need to combo for me.

If you are to combo, go iblades to i200. But if you can’t hit iblade 4,5 and 6 well. Probably should get i200/g400 combo.

Have to agree with LaymanM, iBlades/i200 combo. Most clubs we can hit up to 7 iron. So if that is your line, go with i200s 6 iron and up?! For me I don't carry anything higher than a 5 iron. After that is a hybrid. Power specs. also lower the bounce, so be aware of that too. ;)

It does seem really strange to mix super game improvement and blades but hey ho.

Anyway, there's a simple answer to all this.

Just get i200s. They're ace

Plenty of Tour players playing i200s so if its blade kudos you want, forget it. Have i200 kudos, it'll serve you better.

I had 3 and 4 crossovers with my i200s and Glides plus a Ping G Driver and 3 wood but the long sticks have all gone now. I'm in M1 driver and 2 3 4 hybrids instead. Monsters and way easier to hit than the crossovers.
