In three years time our group went from 8 to 10 guys down to just three of us who could play every week, over half died several had medical issues, I'm now at a point I have a difficulty playing 18 holes do to medical issues (not going into details but the last surgeon has told me it will be years to recover or I may stay right where I'm at, which is not good for golf as I've only played one 18 hole round in the last two years and that was with difficulty). I was never a big hitter through out my life at the end or playing weekly I was (in our group), twenty years from now (when I'm 82) I hope I can just get nine holes in, if it takes a shaved driver I could care less. For those who look down from their high horse go for it, but your day will come, used to walk nearly every round now a short nine hole in a cart is my limit and it's a real struggle. Enjoy your health while you have it, and do your best to not judge others when you have no idea what their struggle might be.

Great post, Don!!

It sounds to me like you're getting enjoyment out of thise 9 hole rounds...which is a food thing. Who needs 18 holes when you can play 2 two 9 holers and add them together? :)

Frankly...I didn't expect this thread to take such a strange twist to the negative.

Some things to consider. People swing their clubs for different reasons. Some people play competitvely. Some people consider the game a hobby. Some people consider the game an escape from the rat race. Some just want an excuse to get outside for a few hours.

Throughout this thread...there have been some pretty inspiring comments relative to just getting out there and giving the ball a whack...not necessarily playing for anything other than fun. At the end of the day...isn't that what it's all about...folks? Fun?

To you...and the 82 years young OP. Keep "swinging your swing" as Arnie said...and playing your game. I certainly hope I can do the same at your age.

So salty. You guys are rich.

Agreed. It’s quite salty to call out the 82 year old for a lack of integrity because he wants to make the game more enjoyable.

Let's call a spade a spade, he's a cheater. For fun is one thing. I don't play for fun. I play with a lot of old timers and they play legit even from the reds. I'm coming from cheaters in baseball leagues with shaved bats, it's not right. Play your game with legal clubs in your hands.

Nothing wrong with calling out cheaters. Have a great weekend guys.

What would Arnie, Jack or Gary do? I highly doubt the Wounded Warrior guys shave their (driver) heads despite their physical limitations. It's called integrity. SMH

Not to mention the integrity of your driver is now greatly compromised. The face might cave in or become warped after a few rounds. Already out of warranty I assume too, and wouldn't be covered after the shaving anyway.

What model Cobra driver did you shave? You could've just upgraded to a modern driver (within the last 5 years). Cobra ZL Encore, BioCell, Fly Z etc. or Cleveland SL290, HiBore, Srixon 545, something lighter weight for like $50.

What would Arnie do? I dunno. Endorse a non-conforming driver maybe?

If he's not playing money matches and not playing in tournaments it's not cheating. I'm having a hard time understanding why any of you would give a damn about it? Ridiculous! Let him have fun with it and enjoy the game.

My 78 year old mom plays 9 holes about twice a month. She's not good enough to enjoy playing the ball down so if she feels the need, she improves her lie through the green. If she didn't do that she probably wouldn't even get the ball in the air 90% of the time. I can't imagine it's much fun hitting grounders to short-stop for 2 hours...lol! She plays with friends and they just do it for enjoyment and some exercise. I can't wait to call her a cheater next time I speak with her!

Good on the OP for trying to get more enjoyment out of this fickle game. I don't see any reason for all the negative comments. He didn't say he was planning on playing any USGA sanctioned events or trying to deceive anybody. I don't see any difference between him getting his driver shaved for his recreational round and the guys that stock up on the nonconforming wedges that are legal for non usga events. The USGA is not "LAW". This game was around long before the USGA came along. I am guessing the same people that would get upset by this are the probably the same people that complain about how long a round takes because of slow play. This game is bigger than any one person and everybody has the right to play and enjoy it any way they want to, as long as they aren't hurting anybody.

Have to agree with this. Play a member guest tournament every year and my partner for the first few seasons was the oldest active member the course had. He was 86 when he passed away and played up until the day he left this earth. He played the front tees and would hit his drive no more than 130 yards in the fairway. He was the best playing partner for a tournament I have ever had.

Even the other members had a saying for him after he hit his tee shot. It was, "Hey diddle diddle, Bill's down the middle."

Just because you get old, doesn't mean you have to start cheating to continue to enjoy the game.

How is it cheating??? If you aren't playing a USGA event, play whatever the hell you want.

My Dad is in his mid-70's and plays 9 holes a week if he's lucky. He's had two back surgeries and a hip replacement. I can feel his frustration growing each year as his body loses flexibility little by little. I just want him top have fun while we're out there together. If he was playing a non-conforming driver to save himself a few strokes a round, that would be great by me. Because at the end of the day, he's not out there to live up to your expectations. This thread didn't start out with a question of the merits of driver shaving. Why take the time to demean an 80+ year old who just wanted his driver back.

The OP never asked whether what he was doing was considered illegal or not. Nor did said he was playing in a member guest tournament. If he was the yes it would be cheating but if he is out there by himself or with friends playing casually then it is not cheating. I would wager if you called a member of the USGA Rules Committee, they would say the same thing.

This is a forum isn't it? I believe everyone is subject to opinions on a public message board, if they ask for it or not. I don't remember asking for your opinion on my post.

You have your opinions and I have mine. Even though he might not be playing any tournaments or events, it is still cheating.

I guess instead of having opinions we should all just sit together around a camp fire singing kumbaya holding hands.

Just because this is a public forum does not mean that your opinions or mine for that matter need to be typed out when not asked for. As far as you saying it is still cheating whether he is playing tournaments/events or not, I just don't understand how that can even be possible. The club in question is only illegal in usga sanctioned events. People outside of the us don't use the usga's rules and I am sure some rules are slightly different. Does that mean they are cheating? No. Not everyone plays this game using the usga's rules and regulations. Again this game was around long before there were rules on cor or ct. Let the man play however he wants and you can play your way. It is just that simple. I am just as guilty as you or anyone for that matter, when it comes to putting my opinions out there when they aren't necessary. I do apoligize for derailing this topic and I wasn't trying to go at you specifically. Yours was just the one I replied to. I will end this way. You play our way and the OP can play his way until you two play against each other, then you guys can hash out if you want to play with the usga rules or not.

Ok, since in your view "it is still cheating," who has been cheated here? Who is the victim of the unfair advantage gained by the OP using his new "hot" driver if he no longer plays in tournaments or money games?

You do realize, that for the OP to be "cheating", someone has to be getting cheated, correct? So, remind me, who is being cheated in this case? (And save some "integrity of the game" bullcrap, there is not one person being affected by him having his driver shaved.)

Now, if your problem is with the company that is doing the shaving, and that they're possibly helping someone cheat? Ok, there's a conversation to be had there. But, you're really going to have to adjust your message, and how and where you're delivering it. Trying to knock down straw men you two are erecting here is just a bad look.

If that's the case, my advice- start a thread about how this company is tainting the game. Don't use a thread started by an octogenarian, who is trying to squeeze out every last drop of enjoyment he can from a game he clearly loves to play while he is still able, to fulfill some personal agenda.

If your problem IS with this gentleman specifically... I got nothing, but may God have mercy on you.

How in the hell did this thread get so sideways?

This is a Deal or No Deal thread...in the Deal or No Deal Forum...with an OP talking about a Deal that he thought was going South.

Take all this Rules bull*** to the Rules Forum. AKA...a Forum for threads talking about Rules and Etiquette.

As a matter of fact...I'll help you get there:

http://www.golfwrx.c...-and-etiquette/

This thread is about a guy not getting his merchandise...and is not all that unlike the rest of the DoND threads that crossed this Forum throughout the years. I'm pretty sure the OP doesn't give a rats Word not allowed about breaking any Rules...likewise for a good portion of us who are in the DoND Forum to read something other than Rules t**-for-tats.

Want to talk Rules? Go talk Rules in the Forum that's set up to talk Rules in.

I've seen a lot of dumb sh** on this site...and this ranks up there with the best of them.

Just want to add a personal response to your post- I’m not responding to these two in regards to rules. I’m responding to two people name calling and shaming a gentleman for no apparent reason other than for some strange self fulfillment. It’s bizarre and twisted, and slightly disgusting. I agree this doesn’t belong in this forum, and should have been locked up long ago. But, at this point it’s just a couple holier-than-thou high horse bullies putting themselves on display for all to see and comment on.
