What’s the most forgiving forged iron that you’ve ever played?

Interesting. I did not know the ap2 face wasn't forged. I stand corrected.

No wonder. I've never thought the ap2 is that soft.

I'm shocked tbh.

I do still think a forged chassis softens up an iron, but the part contacting the ball makes the biggest difference.

Not your fault they throw the terms around loosely. I agree with you on feel of the AP2. They’ve never felt soft to me, and pretty harsh on mishits, but I thought they just aren’t a good match for me or I’m not good enough to hit them well. The AP2 is Titleist’s No. 1 iron on Tour and maybe they are No. 1 period. So maybe it doesn’t matter. Pros are more and more going for forgiveness and fast faces too, because the courses are so long and not everyone is DJ, Rahm, Koepka or Justin Thomas.

I think the new Callaway MB, TM 730, Mizuno MP18 and Titleist 718 MB are all gorgeous irons but I could not play anything less than a 8 iron in any of those. I do like the classic MB heads in the scoring irons, but it is getting harder to mix those with the fast-face designs.

I’m not really hung up on playing a pure forged iron, I just don’t like the liberties the OEM’s are taking with the use of the word forged. The two irons I am looking hard at rignt now are the Rogue Pro and the Wilson C300 Forged. The Rogue is definitely not forged and the Wilson has an unsupported face in the long and mid irons for more speed. I want to make the game easier if I can. Yet I also am very tempted by the Titleist 718 CB which looks so good to me.

Ten years from now, I wonder if kids coming up in the game will have any idea what forged used to mean!

[i just looked it up. AP2 has a face insert. IMO, any club with a face insert is not forged. I will go along with it if the head is forged and they have co-forged tungsten weights in the toe and heel, as long as the head is a one-piece forging and that includes the face

Buf if there is a steel face inserted on to a forged chassis, that is not forged, that's fake forged. Marketing does not make it forged and OEM's don't get to change the definition as they see fit.

The 718 MB is forged, the 716 CB (but not the 718CB) is forged. The AP2 is a steel face inserted on a forged body, and that is how they feel.

... You are entitled to your personal opinion but that does not change the fact that they are forged. I don't think OEM's are throwing the term around loosely either or trying to confuse or trick their customers. Titleist describes the AP2's as co-forged "Greater forgiveness and stability are achieved through precise perimeter tungsten weighting and a unique co-forged construction." And my favorite irons from Cobra the Forged Tour's are multi-material forged "The King Forged are the ultimate multi-material Forged iron". I have played many sets of solid construction forged MB's as well as Forged CB's and forged multi material is an evolution that I and obviously many others appreciate as long as it is fore from a soft carbon steel. The Forged Tours feel very sweet and soft. Soft as my one piece MP33's, 690.MB's or J33CB's? No but they are much more forgiving and I am happy with the trade off. Ymmv of course ...

I haven’t played a lot of the newer models so can’t really comment on them. But I always liked the original Callaway X Forged. And going back even further, the original Hogan Edges (weren’t they the first ((or one of the first]) Forged cavity backs? I loved how they would plow through just about any lie and still give decent results.

I once had a set of Callaway Big Bertha Fusion irons. At the time one of the most, if not the most, forgiving irons available. I had a lot of trouble with them. Hit a lot of low hooks. One day on the course, as I struggled with my iron play, my friend handed me his 4-iron and said, "Hit this," after I hooked my 4-iron into the woods. I grabbed it, took a swing and hit a nice high baby draw.

For the rest of the round I hit his irons and found them to be a lot easier to hit than my Fusions.

His irons were Nike VR Pro blades.

From then on I always thought forgiveness to be overrated.

... You have touched on the mantra I had as an instructor for 5 years and still believe. I am of the opinion that everyone should play "the most forgiving irons they can effectively play". For someone like Tiger or Rory that effectively means MB's because they depend on maximum workability and any forgiveness will make that goal more difficult. But then someone like Spieth that certainly works the ball depends on more forgiveness in his AP2's. What I found with most of my students was they didn't practice or didn't practice enough, did not have natural hand eye coordination, swung too hard with inconsistent contact and so most needed SGI or at least GI irons as the most effective iron they could play. Of course better players and good ball strikers with forward shaft lean at impact do not need a ton of weight in the sole to increase their trajectory or a draw bias to compensate for their over the top early release and some do not need the perimeter weighting. So for them, finding the right balance between workability and forgiveness should be their goal. I doubt there are many Am's with Rory/Tiger ability and with so many Pro's playing irons like AP2's, Apex Pro's or TM770's forgiveness is certainly not overrated, it is just a question of how much do you need to play your best golf.
