On Michael Breed's new radio show he took a caller that made an interesting observation. The caller has the opinion that Phil is the greatest golfer of all time because of his behavior and class as a competitor. The way Phil wins and the way Phil loses and the way Phil handles himself at all times on the course is a model of what being a touring professional is all about (this was how the caller summed it up).

I thought this was an interesting take. While I might not agree that Phil is the best all time I do agree that Phil wins and loses with class (except for maybe the Ryder Cup incident).

and Phil represents the epitomy of what golf once was and could be if you connect with your fan base.

I just threw up.

I don't love Phil but he's so much fun to watch play. It's nice to see him get a win (especially over JT, who I honestly can't stand).

Sorry Ferg.

You don't have to apologize. I stand alone here, and at home. My wife and sons like Phil. They don't like JT.

I appreciate Phil's game. He is world class player.

I don't like Phil "outside of golf." I think his management team plays on the "Phil is the modern day Arnie" theme.

It's a little much sometimes.

Ferg, what about Phil on the course yesterday. Strictly on the course --- did Phil show class in his behavior?

If you didn’t applaud that win and that accomplishment ie a 47 year old living legend staring/taking down the hottest young gun and reigning POY down then you’re no golf fan. If tiger did the same I would laud him for it. All joking aside I know you have a personal issue with Phil the man versus Phil the golfer. I have friends who are like that and can’t separate the man from the golfer and they dislike tiger for the same reasons. I personally don’t care about that and can always separate the 2. That’s just me though. I appreciate the sport and it’s players. I was rooting for Vijay in his 40s like I’m rooting for Phil now like I’m rooting for tiger. Davis love winning a few years back on tour is an inspiration to a lot of people becausepeople think winning after 40 let alone 45 is a pipe dream. It’s tough sure, and history is against you but for very special talents like Phil, Vijay, Davis, Tiger etc it’s doable. The ball doesn’t know how old you are! If this turns out to be his last win on tour( which I doubt) it’s a great swan song and a testament to his will and desire and talent. I’m sure this inspired tiger to an extent as well. As I said previously we better enjoy these guys while they’re here.

Phil gets credit for the win, yes, sure fine. Check the box.

However, if JT puts down that par on 17, we’re not having this conversation. We’re talking about JT winning with his B game (referencing his interview on Friday when he said he was swinging poorly). Some “certain” things had to happen in a “certain” order for Phil to win. And yes, I know, that "certain" things happening in order can be said of all tournaments.

Personally, I think Phil kicked it into gear when Tiger came back. You see it burns deep inside Phil’s gut that he was never #1 during the Tiger Era.

If revenge is the fuel, I wish him the best. But it will it last? I am not smart enough to answer that.

Good grief.

And if JT doesn't hole out from the fairway Phil wins in regulation. The young buck makes a hole out and Phil birdies 15 and 16 to still tie, then he wins it on the first playoff hole. And Tiger is NOT Phil's needle, no matter how many of you think that is the case.

Give the man his due. He's a classy guy who won at age 47. Good on him.

The breathing is something he's been working on for almost a year. Seems to be working. That's a sign he's slowing down before pulling the trigger.

He's going to need a good game and good breathing when his # 1 motivator "The Tiger" starts knocking on the door again.

It always amazes me how fans either love or hate Phil. Tiger is the same way across many fan bases

No real change from the early Jack and Arnie days if I had to guess, you're on one side or the other

As a poster above mentioned I now tend to pull for the older guys (having just turned 50 myself)

I was never a Tiger fanatic, but now that he is older and attempting a comeback, I'm pulling for him as well. Schooling the youngsters has appeal I must admit

Ferguson, do you have personal experience with Phil Mickelson that validates your opinion or is it just a "nobody's that nice all the time" thing?

I opened Phil's yearly tournament summary pages in the TOUR's Media Guide and discovered the last time Phil strung four consecutive top 10's together was way back in 2005. What he's doing this year is quite remarkable.

As much as I seem to pick on him, I would have to agree, it is quite remarkable what he is doing right now. Especially at his age with all the young guns out there. And it's really difficult to see him slacking off anytime soon.

How so? maybe he doesnt attack the 18th flag as aggressively? the backhanded complimenting keeps going. So he was lucky JT after hitting a 1 in a million shot on 18 didnt make par on 17? Phil Knew he had to birdie 2 holes for a playoff and 3 to win. he did it. period. hes been working hard since last fall, its not tiger that fuels him its his appetite for competition.

So how annoyed is Phil that in five years he doesn't win is the same five years Tiger is off the map. Then when he finally wins again it looks like Tiger is poised for a few more good years too - lol poor guy.

Tiger just played 3 events lets slow down before jumping the gun. He’s missed one cut drove it horribly at 2 events hit very good irons at his last event along with horrible ones but still hasn’t contended. Let him contend first and play possibly back to back weeks before we can assess where he’s at. If he plays the next 2 months the way Phil played his last 6 months there’s hope but until he does it’s all speculation. Moving forward, nothing Tiger does will diminish or overshadow what Phil does.

This is important. Amazingly, Phil is currently 2nd on the PGA TOUR's money list, and he's right up there in Scoring Avg. and Top 10's. If he were in his prime he would be thought of as a potential Player of the Year and money champ.

Never in the gloried history of the PGA TOUR has a player Phil's age won either of those honors. It will be interesting to see if he has the stamina to carry his stellar play throughout the entire season.
