Anyone been there?

I am thinking of a winter (in Canada) vacation any ran across this destination.

I'm thinking 10 days playing golf here. Very likely this would be a solo travel due to playing partners economic restrictions.

Also, I may possibly advertise for a second that is interested

Advise appreciated.

Yes. It is wonderful. I like Lost Farm more than Dunes but both are outstanding and it is just a blast seeing kangaroos all over the place. I had two balls stolen by blackbirds though :) It is an easy drive up from Launceston but you can take a small plane down from Melbourne as well. I only stayed for 5 days but I was living in Sydney at the time so it was a much smaller trip for me. Definitely worth the effort.

Absolutely. It is the best place I have ever played golf. I'm not 100% sure why, but I loved it more than Bandon and Scotland (both of which are great). It was not that crowded, the weather is good, and it is very affordable (all day golf doe $120 AUD I think). The low key setting of the courses and lodging feel like Bandon (since Keiser funded both), but Bandon can be a little crowded at times. If you are going for 10 days, I would recommend staying a couple days in Melbourne and trying to play a few courses there. As awesome as Barnbougle is, I think 7-10 days there might be too much. I would spend 3 -5 days in Melbourne and 4 - 5 at Barnbougle to get a flavor of both placed. The concentration of quality public golf in Melbourne and Tasmania is only rivaled by the UK.

If you go, I recommend staying a night in Launceston and checking out the town. It's pretty quiet, but there are some cool old buildings and the Gorge is amazing. It's a few mile hike to a cable car that crosses the river and it is beautiful. I can't recommend Tasmania enough.

Hey thanks CMCSGolf.

My plan would include several other trips to other courses, I meant 10 days on Tass, probably 6 days total at Barnbougle, 3 at the front and 3 at the back

Surely there are other more local, low key, but very good courses on the island.

Eventually I would need a detailed guide/itinerary, I'm just in preliminary scoping mode right now.

You won't find anything in Tasmania remotely close to Barnbougle. Of course this is other golf available - Launceston has a couple of public courses which by all accounts are serviceable. About 3.5hr drive south is the state capital of Hobart. A beautiful city - Royal Hobart is good, as is Kingston Beach. I have heard Tasmania GC used to be good, but gone downhill - can't confirm this one.

Either way, Tasmania is a beautiful place, so "if" you get tired of golf, there are many wonderful natural attractions you can visit.

Enjoy!

Barnbougle is an amazing course. I played it last year with a couple from Scotland who thought it was the best course they had ever played and they had played all of courses on the Open rota. I haven't played there but everything I have heard about Cape Wickham on King Island between Tasmania and Melbourne sounds like it is even better than Barnbougle so if you are going that far, rather than going back to Barnbougle, you could look at including Cape Wickham as well. Some amazing wineries in Tasmania if that is your thing and Hobart must be 1 of the best kept secrets as a destination.

Barnbougle is an amazing piece of property from all members reports who did a trip.

Cape Wickham is gaining traction also.

Dont miss Melbourne. Seriously. Golf mecca. Food is great, wine is great, casino is great...otherwise know as the one way ATM!

Victoria GC, Kingston Heath, Metropolitan are all flat out great tracks. Ive played a stack in Melbourne, happy to help if I can be of any assistance.

Liiving in Melbourne, I have played all four of these Tasmanian courses - on the main island: Barnbougle is a brute, Lost Farm is a gentle beauty, while on King Island which is close by: Ocean Dunes is a difficult beast and Cape Wickham is a super model. All are brilliantly designed eg Doak/Crenshaw at Barnbougle/Lost Farm. Right up there with Bandon. There are heaps of flights to both and you can do them all in one trip from Melbourne. We are going to King Island next month and play CW on the Saturday , stay in the onsite lodge, then play OD Sunday and fly back to Melbourne that evening. ps The best cheese on KI as well.

Advise appreciated.

We had a family holiday in Tazzie over December holidays a few years ago, and stayed a week in Bridport close by.

Allocated two days for golf, one on each course.

Was literary blown away - extremely strong winds on one day that made golf nearly impossible (knew we were in trouble when one of the locals decided not to play), the other day the wind was also strong but playable. Having family commitments made it difficult to play it again when the weather was better.

Next time I will prepare to play it when the weather is good, and not on a certain date.

Also had good experiences in Hobart.

This is certainly possible if you live in Australia, the OP is Canadian.

Golf touring in places with iffy climates (Scotland, Ireland, Tasmania) is always a risk, like skiing, you book when you think conditions will be best..........if it doesn't work out so be it.

Bit of evidence around (threads on Australian forums) that whilst cold, winter is a great time to go to Barnbougle as its less windy.

Thanks, good info here and also for the correction on the names.

So, what would be a recommended month to get a shot at good weather at both these locations?

I would say March and April are the best months for golf in Tasmania and the Melbourne area generally. So you can escape the muddy spring in Canada.

Thanks, where I live March is rarely spring, although last year was the exception. We started golf in early April, usually finish mid October. The year before golf ended Sept 29.

By the way it's Barnbougle, not Barnsbougle. Also we write and say Tassie with a soft s not Tazzie.... and Yes the wind does blow way down there!! Its like Bandon, the wind comes directly off the ocean to the west.

O dearie, spelling and pronunciation police, everywhere these days ... We say Tazzie here with district z, or Tasmania with a soft s, for what is worth. Each to its own.

Anyway, hit them in the middle, and make thoze putts.

Like putting, it helps to be accurate

One can make a putt in many different ways, more than one line and speed will do the job. Many ways to be accurate.

Anyway, hit them hard, long and chip them in when you miss the greens.

Quasimoto if you are going that long I would toss the following trip type schedule. If golf is the main reason and sites seeing second.

3-4 days in Melbourne

2 days on King Island (roughly 80 AUS puddle jumper flights between main island and Tas) .... Check the courses there and you will know why =)

3-4 days in Tas

I just did a trip break down about 3 weeks ago for exactly what you are thinking.

I have been to Barnbougle 5 times. 3 times in local winter and twice in summer. Had some windy days but nothing close to unplayable. Winter can be nice weather wise. The staff say it is a secret that that is the best time. Often have the course to yourself. Summer is nice too with longer days.

I would say 3-4 days is plenty to stay there. Pretty dead there doing a solo trip. Did that once myself for 3 days. I would say get your fill of golf and go see the sights of Tassie. It is beautiful and the cities, esp Hobart are worth a visit.

Look at King Island for sure. Apparently epic courses too.

But since we're being accurate, you might want to skip the random, mid-sentence capital letters and insert full stops when you're done.

We are Australians. Aussies if you want to call us that. Not Ozzies. And we play golf at Barnbougle. Google it if you like. :golfer:
