Low Spin/High Spin

What are the advantages/disadvantages of low/high spin drivers?

 

I've been reading the comments about the Titleist drivers being high spin and that this is a disadvantage to many players.

 

I'm guessing that a high spin driver doesn't go as far as a low spin driver (?)

 

What is the advantage of a high spin driver? More accuracy?

 

What is the disadvantage of a low spin driver?

Low spin drivers are longer but you will be punished more on miss hits.

I think the prob w/ Titleist drivers is they can be on the higher spinning side and also on the side of lower forgiveness. Often times, the lowest spinning heads (potentially longest) are the least forgiving, and higher spinning models can be more forgiving. High spin, low forgiveness is not a good combo...

There are no inherent advantages or disadvantages. Which will give better distance depends on your swing characteristics which dictate what you need to get optimal distance. For some people it will be more spin, for others it will be less spin. However, for the vast majority of ams (slower to moderate swing speeds), it generally wont make that much of a difference IF you pick the right loft for whatever head you might be interested in. It's also important for eveyrone to get "fit" properly so you can get the most consistent center face contact possible for your swing. NOT being able to get consistent center face contact will cause the spin to vary WAY more then any aspect of the head design and therefore the choice on which head will not really matter.

 

There are some general tendencies but even those are not always true anymore. Lower spin heads tend to also have lower MOI which means more gear effect (which is part of what makes them low spin in the first place). But that can also mean less forgiving on off-center hits - more side spin on toe/heel hits and high spin on hits low on the face.

 

It means absolutely nothing with respect to how much ball speed might be lost or how big the sweet spot might be.

On thing to bear in mind with spin is that, all things being equal (ball speed and launch angle) the difference between 2200rpm and 2900rpm is about four yards of carry (if Flightscope's trajectory optimizer is to be believed)

 

Obviously in the real world, spin goes up because of strike, so ball speed will go down.

 

And the big one, as stated, if you have low spin and then mishit it toward the toe, you've now got far too little spin

Higher spin heads cost you a lot of distance in the wind, and of course the ball will not roll out as far once it hits the ground, because of both spin and increased angle of descent. A couple hundred rpm won't be the end of the world, but once you start adding 300+ rpm on top of your optimal window, it starts making quite a measurable distance loss on total distance.
