How do you play golf most often ?

The thread in "Rules", specifically about the new world handicap system scheduled to go into effect in 2020, has brought about some interesting discussion on how we play golf the majority of the time.

Basically the question is do you generally play in an event that includes more players than just your 4-some, such as Stableford or other stroke play events (daily or cumulative) ?

Or do you mostly play 1 or more "match play" games just within your own group ?

I broke down the poll between the USA and the Rest of the World. Please don't be offended.

And if I missed any choices please pick the one closest.

Thanks.

Other: stroke play, straight up with friends, no bets. We do have games like the guy with the worst start for the round is the marker and a birdie race (who gets most birdies, an eagle trumps any number of birdies).

I play such a hybrid of formats, but I almost always keep track of some type of match play within my group. On vacations, I'll keep track of a match against my wife. Many times, we'll do match play within the group, with best of the four matches against another group or two, as well as a couple of dollars for various trash bets and low individual net and gross. Half of the fun is getting 2 or 3 or 4 groups in the tavern afterwards and figuring out all the bets. But sometimes, I just play with friends for fun.

One of the things I don't get (guess there's a lot LMAO).

About 400 views now (and only 25 members voting). I realize that's not "unique" views but I have to wonder why, if someone bothered reading the first post why they wouldn't take 20 seconds to vote in the poll,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :dntknw: One of the mysteries of life I guess. :)

Maybe you should start a poll, to try and find out why :)

I didn't answer as I am pretty much a 50/50 split between match play semi serious money games and stroke play tournament events or a weekly stroke play game that I am involved in. If I am on the golf course, and not doing one of those things I am playing multiple balls by myself. Actually, now that I bring that up I am a dead even split three ways according to your poll...... : )

I’m pretty much the same. I play in a league that does 9 hole matches twice a month where we rotate through the rest of the members and earn points all season with prizes at the end of the year. I play in a second that gets together once a month and does an 18 hole stroke play tournament for small prizes. Outside of those, I play about once a month with friends or family and we keep score but rarely bet.

When I'm in Florida (winter), I play in 4 leagues per week, so it's USGA stroke play rules. Not much casual play. The other 6 months in VA, I play in golf buddy groups, so we do quota games, or just get together and play golf with no bets.

It seems like this thread might cater to those who compete while they play golf more so than those who go out and play casual golf For the love of the game. For Pure enjoyment of the game I have my regular foursome I golf with, and maybe one or two all of us are interchanged every now and then with others. I find that to be the most relaxing type of golf, that being casual golf with my friends. I also enjoy tournament-style golf but don't get too serious with that either. I don't really care 4 Wagers and bets as I think that puts stress on people, as I don't need anybody else's money nor do I like to give mine away.

I always like to play for some money. The format changes group to group.

My favorite is a 12 guy game. Play in teams of 3. Take the two best balls on the 4s, take the worst ball on the 3s, and take all 3 on the 5s. Generally playing in two 6somes or one big 12some. Generally try to 12ish holes in this format

I play three different ways about equally; with the occasional outing or invite here and there.

1. Men's club tournaments vary with both stroke and match events, net or flighted scratch, with skins pot and side bets. More serious golf.

2. Softball buddies games with gimmies, beers and usually trying to out drive each other.

3. Solo before work and sunset rounds. Rarely play a single ball or keep score. mostly out just hitting shots.

That's how we do it too, usually a 3-some. If it grows to 4+ we will throw in Wolf or something for a few bucks.
