Who else has "Pure" irons?

Recommended Posts

Just picked up my 718 AP2's w/ KBS C-Taper LITE shafts after a fitting at Club Champion. For an extra fee they "Pure" the irons. Claiming that not all shafts are perfectly straight and symmetrical, ultimately using this to find the ideal point to mount the head...I said what the heck and had them do it...

Anyone else have this done and notice a difference?

Hoping to hit the range tomorrow and give them a go!

Last summer when I got a new set of clubs, the club fitter/builder had fit and built clubs for Tour Players before, he offered a puring option. I asked him about it and he said that it probably wasn't necessary that any improvement would be so minor Id never see it. He also said its about 50/50 for tour players getting pured clubs. He had some who swear by it and others who dont care or dont see a difference and never got it done again. I dont think its useful for a majority of players, but if you think it can give you a 0.0001% improvement at the highest level and its how you make a living, then its probably worth it even for a psychological boost.

I read a story a few years ago about Tiger doing some club testing. Out of something like 12 very similar irons, 2 were fitted with Pured shafts. Without telling him that they had even put pured shafts in any of the irons, Tiger chose the two irons with the pured shafts for further testing. Iirc, I think they then did the same test, again without telling him, with some other irons and he picked out the pured shafts again.

Ah well in that case I'm definitely going to get my irons pured too, at $30/iron. [Tiger fanboy mode circa 2005]

Moral of the story(if true): if you are the greatest ball striker of all time and a feel player, get your shafts Pured.;)

I’ll somewhat play devils advocate with this. I recently did the full bag fitting at Club Champion and I went with the pured shafts. I’ve known the fitter for 15 years and he swears by puring. He was doing this before working at CC. I haven’t had my clubs long enough to give a good opinion but I’m seeing much less curve in my ballflight. Yesterday had a decent breeze blowing and my flight just held its line. Maybe this is because of the fit and dropping spin rates or maybe it is because of the fit and build. I’m liking what I’m seeing so far.

I have played pured woods and irons for the past ten plus years- not expecting to hit it further or anything from getting it done- simply wanting to ensure that my equipment is the absolute best it can be- a couple hundred dollars or whatever it costs for the whole set is nothing compared to my annual spend on equipment and playing.

It's the same as trying to find and keep the perfectly sphere golf ball...... mostly a waste of time and money for the golfers. Especially in the days of the wound balata golf balls.... once the golf ball left the driver's face, it will not be a perfectly round sphere. Had known top competitors change out balata golf balls every 3-5 holes because of it. Of course their golf ball supply was sponsored. I used to be given those "reject" often and they looked and played well enough for my game.

I had found the advance in technology tread in the fields of new frontier which may or may not benefit for the purpose of end result. However, we all know how important it is of the psychological influence of using any tool. If you believe it will improve your golf game, that might just boost your confidence level a notch.

So if you believe the "pure" will benefit your golf game, then money well spent. If you continue to have doubt.... then perhaps not.

If it really made that big of a difference, every Tour player would have it done, period!

None were advertised but certainly many Touring Professionals had their irons "pured".

Whether it'd be with certain method or simply the fit and tinker to get the irons play the way they preferred. Some of their shafts were hand selected, gauge checked and rechecked, weighted and spine....

It's been done since Hogan's era.

Don't - it was shaft weight difference he noticed, nothing to do with PURE.

Only shafts I ever had "pured" were ones the fitter got wrong in general so who knows. Never wasted money having it done again.

Show me the statistical proof, otherwise snake oil.

Understand the properties of what you're talking about and you'll realize not snake oil. Sometimes technology is just too advanced for a simple mind. This process is done in many other applications, not just golf clubs.

Whether a technology is advanced or not, if you can't prove with data that it works, then it doesn't work. Or, at the very least, it doesn't work at a statistically signifiant level for the application in question.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
