1979 Ben Hogan Cameo's MINT!

Recommended Posts

What? No 1 or 2 iron?

Thought you would never ask! And yes they all come from complete sets.

Haha. I love how that one Hogan has "Bounce Sole" written on the back. Because when selecting a 1 iron, getting the bounce right is always my biggest issue.

I think you're supposed to be excited that there is *any* bounce on the sole of the 1 iron.

Lovely! Would to hit those. I would LOVE to own a set of 1973 Apex in that condition

I have 2 sets of '73's 2-E w/Apex 4 shafts, ones in very good condition the other is in excellent mint condition.

I also have this left handed set 2-E w/Apex 3 shafts. I'm guessing they are 73's aswell though they say Slazenger on the sole.

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance.

I’ve actually got a set of those Slazenger Hogan’s myself(missing 5 & 9 Irons though) and there is another fella around here(Rex235) who has a set of them as well, his set is complete though. Here’s a link to the thread I started on them in an attempt to find out more info on them. If you ever want to sell them, let me know :)

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1406560-lhleft-handed-slazenger-ben-hogan-apex-irons-any-info/

Awesome set! Have they ever seen a ball? They look like they’re brand new :)

Previous owner said he played with them and shot one of his best rounds, though it doesn't look like it, they are mint. He recently had shoulder surgery and offloaded most of his Hogan collection to me.

That’s sweet that you got them in such great shape, are you going to play them or display them? I’d be tempted to display them I think if it was me :)

I had the one iron in the Slazenger Apex. Used it until it was worn out. What a club.

Pretty sure they haven't been re-chromed, what would be some tell tell signs?

Very nice set of irons. But have a few areas of concern as to originality. The ferrules on originals Apex II's had a singular red ring, those have two. Similar style to the later '99 - '00 Apex's. Also the scoring lines appear to be devoid of black paint fill. Either someone stripped it out, or it was never reapplied after a rechrome. Lastly and IIRC, the "II" on the sole should have red paint fill. On the other hand, they still have the hosel pins installed. Most rechrome (or reshaft) jobs do not bother with reinstalling pins. Other than for complete authenticity. Modern epoxies no longer require their use. What shafts are installed?

Nevertheless, their beauties! I'm rather partial to old(er) Hogans as well. No claim to authenticity with these, they've been 'modernized' with FCM Rifle 5.5's. Number of Hogan aficionados reside in the Classic forum.

Own two sets. Everyone should.

They actually have a degree of outright loveliness that is blushingly embarrassing.

Sorry I beg to differ about the red paint fill in the "II" maybe in your 1983 models for they were "Black Cameos" to signify the end year of production for this model. Mine are from 1979 difference of 4 years. And about the ferrules, the previous owner installed modern Ben Hogan Apex 3 frequency matched shafts, and built his own ferrules using individual rings. I know they don't look the best but it is what it is. There for he never installed the hosel pins I just completed this part of the project... boy that was fun, I had some really good help from these forums. Thank you very much to the Golfwrx community. pic below is of a solo cameo I must have picked up from a thrift store, this is what began my search for a set. I did paint fill the 9 number RED but i never touched the Apex II.

Exceptional collection of 1 irons!.

What information would you like on your Ben Hogan Slazenger Apex iron set? Most likely 1972-1974

The Slazenger UK division of Ben Hogan did offer LH Persimmon woods as well as LH Precision Irons.

This 1 iron is part of the set which we obtained via Stixman from the UK... (1-E)

This Slazenger Ben Hogan 1+ iron set is 3-PW (Yes it says Pitching Wedge, NOT Equalizer) and obtained from Canada.

Most likely before the Apex irons-1970-1972.

NOTE- The American Ben Hogan Golf Company did NOT offer LH Ben Hogan persimmon woods..

MacGregor did offer LH Ben Hogan Persimmon woods before Hogan left them in 1954... We've posted a few photos recently.

1975 LH Walter Hagen Haig Ultra woods?

With a Great Big Bertha Warbird Titanium chaser?

At last! Someone after my own clubs....

Sadly, no LH persimmons from Walter Hagen/Wilson. Laminated woods only. "Strata Bloc" ruled the roost.

Co$t.

Your guess is better than mine, but seeing how the Hogans are '73-'74 makes sense because that's how the set came, in a Acushnet bag I picked them up at a side of the road garage sale for $25 and even the guy selling thought that was too much. I should have asked, "what he wanted for them?" my mistake, I guess I'm just too honest. I obtained the Callaway Warbird and Cleveland Tour Action Reg.588 later for I needed an updated LH driver, I wasn't going to try and hit the puny Walter Hagen #1 but the #3-#4 I will use. And for the Cleveland well the set was't complete without something to get out of the sand. I think the Tycoon 4 putter came with the set too I might be wrong but I have a few LH putters, Nicest one is a Zebra mallet. Its actually all original and Mint. The other is a Black Phantom made right here in Canada. Kind of center shafted for the others who posted about LH center shafted putters.

For white cameos, the paintfill on the sole is incorrect, and the same for the missing black paintfill on the scoring lines on the face. With limited play, that should still be there.

Seems odd for those differences for clubs that have had minimal play. Regardless, they are great irons. FYI, I have 2 sets of the white cameos with both the red and green striped ferrules and both have the same paintfill on the soles and faces.
