Membership North of Boston (Under 30)

Hi all,

 

I am moving to Reading, MA, and am looking to join a golf club, preferably in close proximity to Reading (<20 minute drive). I am looking for a membership under $5,000 per year, and would require a driving range and a full 18 hole course. I am just interested in golfing and am not concerned with other amenities at the club. I am under age 30, so any Young Professional type deal or a course with a good group of competitive players would be a plus. I play to a 4 handicap and my job should allow me to get in 2-3 weekday rounds and a weekend round each week. Thanks for the help!

I’d look at Andover Country Club and Indian Ridge.

 

I’m not sure what the cost is, but <30 dues are generally pretty reasonable.

I would also second Andover CC and Indian Ridge as being your best options. Another 2 options would be Thompson CC and Ferncroft CC. From this list I have only ever played Indian Ridge which was just ok. A bunch of 9-holes privates which I don't think are worth the money and public golf is not very good. As much as I like the Reading area it is a dead zone for golf as I usually end up driving at lest 30 minutes to find a good place to play. South and West of Boston is way better than North.

North is better than West. West of Boston public is basically Leo J (which might not even count as “golf”) and Sandy Burr. It’s awful.

 

Agree that South is far and away the best.

Cheers for the tips guys. Do courses in the area generally allow prospective members to play a round? I'll start calling a few membership offices this week, just wondering what to expect.

Will not disagree with your examples. When I say West I meant course like Butter Brook, Red Tail, Shaker, Wachusetts (great value). North all I have is the Meadows and Black Swan which are both just ok. Portsmouth is a different story but a good hour.

I would expect most on your list would be willing. I know I wouldn't join a place without a chance to tee it up first.

I would recommend calling Renaissance. It’s a little further than Andover CC and Indian Ridge but should be worth the slightly longer ride. Not sure what their membership options though. Good luck.

Bass Rocks in Gloucester little over 1/2 hr. Call Pete Hood and come up and play a round. Great Jr. Membership.
