Did TaylorMade softstep DGS300 as a matter of course?

I have a small sample size.

 

Two sets of DGS300 tapers 0.355 shaft pulls from TaylorMade TP 2014 irons and R7 irons

 

I receive the second set of shafts and they are labelled 4-PW, and I check the tip to first step distances, and they are 0.5 inch longer than "standard" or "straight in."

 

For example the 5 iron tip to first step distance is 10.5, and stock DGS300 5 iron should be 10.0 from the tip to the first step.

 

I check against the first set and they match!

 

I then check against some 2011 Tour Preferred MC's and MB's that I've bought and while not 100% certain, it seem like they are soft-stepped as well.

 

So, just a strange coincidence or is this something that TaylorMade did for a time?

 

Do other OEM's do the same?

 

Or were these all ordered from TaylorMade DGS300 soft stepped once?

 

Curious to hear if anyone has experience with this.

Yes. Taylormade softsteps their irons. When custom ordering, you must request them to hardstep once for them to be the same install as every other oem.

 

Ironically, they tip their woods 1" irregardless of what the shaft manufacturer suggests.

That is interesting data. I would like to know the logic behind the decision. I also now wonder if owners of those irons now feel slighted in some way. Secret soft stepping might hurt some player's egos.

Probably do this just so they don’t have to stock 3 iron shafts. After all a penny saved is a penny earned.

I’ve only played parallel dgs300, so it will be a jump to dgs300 tapers anyway, so soft stepping once won’t hurt

 

I purchased some individual mc irons and need to buy new shafts, so the soft stepping was throwing me off

 

I wasn’t able to find any mention of TM soft stepping their iron sets, hence the thread

 

Yes, it’s ironic that they tip their driver shafts and soft step the irons.
